"We have an industrial strategy in place for people to buy more and more French (cars)," Macron told Les Echos. The electric versions of Stellantis' Peugeot 308 sedan and larger Peugeot 408 unveiled on Monday will be assembled in Mulhouse in eastern France. The Renault 4 will join the new electric Kangoo, produced in Maubeuge, and new Mégane manufactured in Douai, also in northern France.

He added a "social leasing" scheme helping low-income families access an EV for 100 euros per month would start in early 2024. "We have an industrial strategy in place for people to buy more and more French (cars)," Macron told Les Echos. Asked about boosting subsidies for European-made EVs, as the United States has done with its recently-passed Inflation Reduction Act, Macron told Les Echoes he had favoured this approach for years.

According to Stellantis, the Jeep Avenger's "targeted electric range" is 400 kilometers, or a little under 249 miles. Stellantis wants all passenger sales in Europe to be battery electric by the year 2030. Stellantis' electric vehicle plans put it in competition with firms such as Elon Musk's Tesla as well as companies like Volkswagen , Ford , and GM . According to the International Energy Agency, electric vehicle sales are on course to hit an all-time high this year.

The deal covers a project for the development in Algeria of industrial, after-sales and spare parts activities for Fiat, as well as the development of the automotive sector in the country, Stellantis said in a statement, after signing the agreement with the director of cooperation of Algeria's industry ministry. The world's fourth-largest carmaker, which houses brands including Peugeot, Citroen, Alfa Romeo, Jeep and Opel, did not provide further details about the activities it will start under the agreement. The Franco-Italian group signed an agreement with its partner Punch Powertrain to increase production of electrified dual-clutch transmissions (eDCT) for hybrid and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles at its Mirafiori plant in Turin, the carmaker said on Tuesday. Chief Executive Carlos Tavares said the company was investing upwards of 10 million euros in the gearbox upgrade, without giving a precise figure. Turin is the historic home of Fiat which merged with France's PSA last year to form Stellantis. At full production, the Mirafiori and Metz facilities together will supply all relevant Stellantis manufacturing sites in Europe.
