Brisbane, Australia CNN —A helicopter crashed onto the roof of a seaside hotel in Cairns, Australia, in the early hours of Monday, killing the pilot, authorities said, as video showed flames and smoke billowing into the night sky. Police tape around an area in Cairns, Australia, after a helicopter crash on August 12, 2024. As she pulled out her phone to film it, the helicopter veered and headed straight towards the nearby well-lit buildings. Witness Veronica Knight heard two explosions when the helicopter hit the hotel – the first on impact followed by a smaller explosion a short time later. Knight said the helicopter had passed over trees and another taller building before hitting the roof of the seven-story hotel.

SYDNEY — Israeli airstrikes that killed international aid workers in Gaza in April were the result of serious operational failures but were not intentional, according to an Australian government review of the incident released on Friday. Three Israeli airstrikes hit the convoy of aid vehicles traveling through Gaza on April 1, killing seven World Central Kitchen (WCK) staff, including Australian team leader Zomi Frankcom. The killings drew widespread condemnation from Israel’s allies as well as accusations by some that Israel had deliberately targeted the aid workers, a claim it rejected. This confusion was compounded because Israeli officials could not directly communicate with the aid convoy, the review added. Binskin said an apology and compensation for the families were important considerations for Israel, but stopped short of recommending Australia demand either of Israel.

The Labor Department will provide its latest snapshot of the job market on Friday when it releases its monthly employment report — one that will be watched closely as the Federal Reserve looks for further signs of cooling. The report is expected to show that American employers added 175,000 jobs in July, according to a Bloomberg survey of economists.
