Auto execs are losing faith in electric cars

Auto execs are nervous about transitioning to EVs, consulting firm KPMG found in a new survey. Auto executive confidence in high EV sales in the US by 2030 dropped from last year. In a survey of more than 900 auto industry execs, KPMG found that respondents think only 37% of new vehicle sales in the US will be electric by 2030. The survey results come two days after Toyota's CEO came under fire for comments that indicate he's not all that sold on EVs just yet. The KPMG survey also reported that 76% of respondents said inflation and high-interest rates will impact their business in 2023.
Auto companies need EV battery supply more than ever, but the costs are adding up. Prices and a push to use local materials have carmakers investing in in-house battery supply. That means car companies are seeking an alternative and racing to secure their battery supply in the US. But the pandemic — and other disruptions, like natural disasters — shed a light on just how vulnerable that can also make auto companies. It's complicated and time-consuming, but may ultimately be the best way car companies can get closer to lowering the cost of new EVs.
The EV battery recycling giant just announced a new plant in South Carolina. The plant will help carmakers get the materials they need to make EV batteries. With more and more demand for the materials to make these things, taking advantage of recycling can ease a supply crunch and eventually drive down costs. "The goal is to make the most sustainable battery materials," said Jackson Switzer, Redwood senior director of business development and one of Insider's 100 People Transforming Business. "To make the most sustainable battery materials, we need to get as much recycled nickel, cobalt, and lithium as we can into the front end of the system.
It specifies that states must recognize same-sex marriages across state lines and that same-sex couples have the same federal benefits as any married couple. The Respect for Marriage Act does not codify same-sex marriage, though. She noted the Respect for Marriage Act will be one of the last bills she will sign as she ends her second stretch as speaker. Biden's views, like those of many Americans, shifted to support same-sex marriage over his lifetime. But in 2012 then-Vice President Biden announced his support for same-sex marriage on NBC's Meet the Press, backing the measure even before Obama did.
In May, NASA reported its Voyager 1 spacecraft was sending strange data back to Earth. An engineer works on an instrument for one of NASA's Voyager spacecraft, on November 18, 1976. NASA/JPL-CaltechDuring the first 12 years of the Voyager mission, thousands of engineers worked on the project, Dodd said. In late August, Voyager engineers located the source of the garbled data: the spacecraft's attitude-control system was routing information through a dead computer. NASA/JPLFrom discovering unknown moons and rings to the first direct evidence of the heliopause, the Voyager mission has helped scientists understand the cosmos.
Battery prices have risen this year for the first time in a decade, according to BloombergNEF. A few potential solutionsFirst, auto manufacturers are working to establish battery supply in the US, as most American players have long relied on foreign supply chains. Establishing an EV battery supply chain can't be done overnight. And, any new EV battery mix comes with trade-offs. Because of the many challenges riddling the EV battery space, prospective car-buyers shouldn't expect automaker ideas to come to light in the form of lower EV prices quickly.
Bernstein has sifted through the various sectors of the crypto industry and identified winners and losers for 2022. Crypto suffered the added handicap of the financial contagion from the collapse of Terra in the first half of the year and FTX currently. Binance, which operates in a regulatory gray zone, will eventually become the "global consolidator" of smaller off-shore exchanges, Bernstein said. While FTX taught investors about the risks of storing crypto holdings with centralized entities, revelations in the stablecoin sector went the other way around. Solana, on the other hand, took a hit, stained by the fallout of FTX, a big and early backer of Solana.

A "battery passport" that traces everything from a battery's mining to recycling could help. Experts say using the battery passport could separate auto-industry winners from losers. That challenge could be alleviated by the "battery passport," a new way of documenting where all the bits of a battery come from and where they're going. In Europe, newer regulations have increased scrutiny of battery sustainability and safety. The battery passport could make it easier to get through them.
Summary Higher-than-expected excess deaths from Europe's heatwaveMany deaths due to high temperature may be under-reportedHeatwaves to become more frequent and intense in futureNov 24 (Reuters) - Summer heatwaves in France, Germany, Spain and Britain led to more than 20,000 "excess" deaths, a report compiling official figures said on Thursday. A heatwave in 2003 caused more than 70,000 excess deaths across Europe, largely in France, and led many countries to implement measures such as early warning systems, asking people to check on others and opening air-conditioned schools. France reported about half of the summer's excess deaths in Western Europe, with 10,420 fatalities in total. Excess deaths reached 3,271 in England and Wales during the summer, Britain's Office of National Statistics reported. Spain recorded 4,655 heat-attributable deaths between June and August while the German health agency reported 4,500.
Longtime investor Ron Baron's mutual fund has been the the biggest winner over the last five years as his top growth picks reaped outsized returns. Crypto lender BlockFi said Monday that it had "significant exposure" to the bankrupt exchange FTX. FTX had given BlockFi an emergency $250 million loan in June after the summer's crypto crash. Even so, the company said, "the rumors that a majority of BlockFi assets are custodied at FTX are false." A crypto investor told Insider that Alameda Research requires several of those portfolio companies to hold assets with FTX. Alameda Research is not a BlockFi investor, but the firms are closely tied because of BlockFi's loan with FTX.

The market will rally into the year end, but it won't be led by mega-cap tech stocks, according to Morgan Stanley's Andrew Slimmon. He added that these Big Tech stocks "floated right through" the 2008 global financial crisis because they were still gaining market share. He noted that this time, the bounce has been led by value stocks, while growth stocks drove the summer rally. The outperformance in value stocks has been pretty broad, covering energy, financials and industrials, he said. "While early, we think it makes sense to begin to nibble on early-cycle stocks ... consumer discretionary names that have been crushed," Slimmon added.

Earth's warming weather and rising seas are getting worse and doing so faster than before, the World Meteorological Organization warned Sunday in a somber note as world leaders started gathering for international climate negotiations. "The latest State of the Global Climate report is a chronicle of climate chaos," United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said. "The melting (of ice) game we have lost and also the sea level rate," WMO chief Petteri Taalas told The Associated Press. The data on sea level and average temperatures are nothing compared to how climate change has hit people in extreme weather. The rate of warming the last 15 years is 67% faster than since 1971, the report said.
Airlines 'frequently' lose unaccompanied children amid disruption, a former flight attendant says. Shelly-Ann Cawley quit her job after witnessing vulnerable passengers being left uncared for. She says it's not safe for children to travel alone as they too often become a second priority. "Airlines try to minimize and cover it up but it happens pretty frequently and I've seen it across all airlines," Shelly-Ann Cawley says. "That was the last straw for me, so I quit my job and started Travelers Care and began flying with vulnerable passengers myself," Cawley said.

Ascend Elements wants to lead in the crucial EV-battery-recycling space. The burgeoning battery-recycling startup Ascend Elements is sitting on a fresh $800 million — and its CEO plans to spend it on beating out rivals like Redwood Materials. Redwood Materials, arguably the most-known player in the industry, saw a whopping $700 million Series C last year. Correction: October 26, 2022 — An earlier version of this story misstated the breakdown of Ascend Element's funding. The $50 million strategic investment from SK is part of the $200 million in equity funding, not in addition to it.
Twitter's most active users are declining, the company wrote in an internal report, Reuters reported. This dwindling population of active users generates half of Twitter's global revenue, the report added, per Reuters. Interest in cryptocurrencies peaked in late 2021, but subsided after this summer's crypto crash, Twitter's internal report added, per Reuters. However, the US has at least 83.4 million active Twitter users, supplying the most users out of any country, according to DataReportal, citing data collected in July by Singapore-based digital consultancy Kepios. The UK has at least 19.8 million active Twitter users, per DataReportal.
Cofounder and CEO Jason Goldberg launched Airstack during the depths of the crypto crash. He ignored advice to take the summer off and instead built a prototype, which caught VCs' attention. Jason Goldberg cofounded his Web3 development startup, Airstack, in May, just as crypto markets began to unravel. Airstack's technology essentially creates application programming interfaces, or APIs, for Web3 applications. It improves upon existing infrastructure such as The Graph by allowing developers to access real-time data from several Web3 applications at a time, Goldberg said.

LONDON, Oct 20 (Reuters) - To some Conservatives, Rishi Sunak is the minister who got Britain through the COVID pandemic, to others the traitor who knifed Boris Johnson or the rival to Liz Truss who presciently warned her tax plans would bring chaos. Now he has to weigh up whether he can convince Britain's governing party he is the man to save it from chaos. With the Conservatives in turmoil, many in his party think he is the only one who can solve the party's woes. Betting firms have again made Sunak the front-runner to win the new contest although he was also the favourite in the race that Truss eventually won. In 2020, aged 39, Sunak was named finance minister just before the coronavirus pandemic hit Britain.
