Workers set up a fence to prevent flooding at Tampa General Hospital in Tampa, Florida, on August 29, as the city prepares for Hurricane Idalia. Miguel J. Rodriguez Carrillo/AFP/Getty ImagesMajor hospitals in the Tampa and St. Petersburg area are preparing for a significant storm surge from Hurricane Idalia. Tampa General Hospital – located in the Davis Islands neighborhood in a surge-prone area of the city — has gone as far as to construct a water-impermeable barrier around parts of its campus. “We are a 259-bed hospital and the largest freestanding pediatric hospital in the area so (we) are prepared to take in patients in need of medical care,” Caci said. BayCare, a hospital system that owns 16 acute-care hospitals in the Tampa Bay area, also said it didn't anticipate any "operational changes” other than closing some ambulatory services.

A blue supermoon will rise tonight, August 30. A somewhat rare occurrence, the next blue supermoon won't appear until 2037. Similar to Strawberry Moons and Pink Moons, a Blue Moon isn't named for its color. Instead, as the phrase "once in a blue moon" suggests, it's all about timing. Blue Moons are less common: Only one in about 33 moons qualifies.

Hurricane Idalia is moving inland after slamming into Florida's Big Bend coast Wednesday morning as an "extremely dangerous" storm with maximum sustained winds of more than 100 miles per hour. The National Hurricane Center warned that catastrophic storm surges were occurring along the coast. Idalia made landfall near Keaton Beach, less than 90 miles from the state capital, Tallahassee, around 8 a.m. ET as a Category 3 storm with maximum sustained winds of 125 miles per hour. The storm has since weakened slightly to a Category 2 with maximum winds of 110 miles per hour.

Hurricane Idalia intensified overnight and is now a Category 4 storm heading toward Florida’s Gulf Coast. The strongest part of the storm will be over Florida’s Big Bend, where the state’s long peninsula curves to meet its Panhandle. More than half of Florida’s western coastline is at risk of life-threatening storm surges, as rising ocean water floods towns. Tallahassee is preparing for outages that could last days, expecting its strongest storm in decades. That’s partly because of human-driven climate change, which appears to have contributed to record-breaking ocean temperatures off the Florida coast.

Hours after the waters of the Gulf of Mexico swept through her house, Donna Knight emerged in a windbreaker and boots to try to get her Chevy SUV to higher ground. By noon on Wednesday, the center of the Category 3 storm had passed, and she and her 19-year-old son knew they had survived. “We should have gotten off the island,” she said. The homes in her neighborhood, many of them Old Florida-style beach houses, were battered and flooded, though some of their metal and wooden shutters remained on windows. The storm surge lingered on some roads, smelling of salt water and gasoline.

With sustained winds of near 100 miles per hour, Hurricane Idalia is nearing Florida’s Gulf Coast, where it is expected to deliver dangerous winds and a life-threatening storm surge by the time it makes landfall tomorrow morning. Rain from the storm’s outer bands has already begun to lash Florida’s southwest coast. Idalia (pronounced ee-DAL-ya) is very likely headed for a vulnerable but sparsely populated portion of the Florida coastline known as the Big Bend, which could see a storm surge of up to 15 feet. Still, our in-house meteorologist Judson Jones told me that officials are especially concerned about the area around Apalachee Bay. “They have never seen a major hurricane,” Judson said.
