And they were, in this moment of defeat by a team from a political rival, not even allowed the comfort of their homeland’s name and flag. To be an Olympian from Taiwan is to not exist, at least not officially. To placate China, the island competes at the Games under the awkward designation of Chinese Taipei. “I’m only fighting for myself, through my own hard work,” said Taiwan’s Chen Szu-yu, substituting self for state on the Olympic stage. Her teammate Chien Tung-chuan sidestepped the political discussion entirely, refraining from comment on Taiwan’s status at the Olympics.

China’s Great Wall of Villages China has moved thousands of people to new settlements on its frontiers. Mr. Akester and Mr. Barnett, who have studied Tibet’s border villages for years, reviewed The Times’s findings. In neighboring Xinjiang and Yunnan, The Times identified six new and 59 expanded border villages. (China says there are hundreds of villages like them, but few details are available and many appear to be mere upgrades of existing villages.) A dozen school districts in Oklahoma said they will not check students’ immigration status if asked by the state’s education department, in the latest sign of growing resistance to State Superintendent of Public Instruction Ryan Walters. “The focus has changed from public school students to self-centered political aspirations,” said Susan Wray, an elementary school principal in Edmond and a former state education department official. School districts also cannot ask students about their immigration status if it may be used to deny them access to a free public education, according to U.S. Department of Education guidance. The Deer Creek, Pryor, Millwood, Owasso and Jenks school districts told NBC News that they do not currently, nor do they plan to, ask students about their status. He threatened to take over Tulsa Public Schools after the district leadership told a board member she could not lead prayers on the microphone at a graduation ceremony.

WASHINGTON — U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan on Friday approved a request from special counsel Jack Smith to allow for more time to propose the next steps in the government's election interference case against former President Donald Trump. The special counsel's office said in its filing Thursday that prosecutors are still assessing the "new precedent set forth" in the Trump immunity decision by the Supreme Court. Smith asked Chutkan to give them and Trump's lawyers until Aug. 30 to submit the joint status report and to schedule the status conference after that. The appeals process made certain that the trial would not happen before Election Day on Nov. 5. Last weekend Chutkan denied an older motion from Trump to dismiss the election interference indictment, filed before the Supreme Court took up the case.

This escalated into days of riots in the U.K. that saw attacks on mosques, immigration centers and hotels that house asylum seekers. The disinformation circulated online tapped into pre-existing biases and prejudice, Ondrak explained, adding that incorrect reports often thrive at times of heightened emotions. Many of the right-wing protestors claim the high number of migrants in the U.K. fuels crime and violence. Ondrak also noted that many groups that had previously circulated false information about the attack had started walking it back, saying it was a hoax. On Wednesday, the U.K. media regulator Ofcom issued a letter to social media platforms saying they shouldn't wait for the new law to come into force.

Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald J. Trump will face off in a televised prime-time matchup on Sept. 10, ABC News said on Thursday, setting up the latest crucial moment in an already unpredictable presidential campaign. The 90-minute debate is expected to be held in Philadelphia, according to two people with knowledge of the plans. In one sense, the announcement maintains the status quo: Mr. Trump agreed months ago to debate President Biden on ABC on that same date. But the Republican nominee wavered on that commitment after Mr. Biden withdrew from the race, arguing that he had not agreed to those terms with Ms. Harris. This year’s previous debate, in June, was perhaps the most consequential in the 64-year history of televised presidential matchups.

But in late July, Mr. Hu stopped updating his page, baffling readers and gratifying some of his critics. Mr. Hu has not explained his silence; nor have China’s internet authorities.
