Rafael Nadal, one of the greatest tennis players of all time, announced his retirement Thursday at age 38, bringing to a close the most dominant clay-court career in the history of the sport. Nadal’s 22 Grand Slams put him second on the all-time men’s list behind Novak Djokovic. “I don’t think I’ve been able to play without limitations.”Born on the Spanish vacation island of Mallorca, Nadal won two grand slams each at Wimbledon and the Australian Open. The London crowd was treated to five sets over almost five hours, finishing at 9 p.m. in near darkness to become the longest Wimbledon final on record at the time. Nadal took the first two sets, was then pegged back 2-2, before winning the final, epic set 9-7.

CNN —Researchers in Denmark have published a case report revealing an unexpected consequence of one of breakdancing’s most iconic moves: the headspin. Breakdancing, or breaking as it’s called by its athletes, made its debut as an official sport at the 2024 Paris Olympics. These can include carpal tunnel syndrome and other nerve problems, as well as a condition known in the breaking community as headspin hole, an overuse injury that can affect the scalp. “This repetitive strain on the skull, scalp and skin likely triggers inflammation, and over time, minor bleeding may lead to thickened skin and scar tissue, forming the characteristic bulge.” Søndergaard, a co-author of the case report, treated the patient. The patient’s head before and after surgery to remove a noncancerous tumor caused by years of breakdancing.

New Zealand will update its guidelines on transgender athletes in community sport following criticism from Olympians that the principles ignore female athletes’ rights and undermine fairness and safety. Critics of transgender inclusion in women’s sport say going through male puberty imbues athletes with a huge musculo-skeletal advantage that transition does not mitigate. Supporters of transgender participation argue that not enough research has been done into the impact of transition on athletic performance and excluding transgender athletes amounts to discrimination. Sport NZ’s “Guiding Principles for the Inclusion of Transgender People in Community Sport” do not apply to elite sport. Individual sports in New Zealand govern how transgender athletes participate at elite levels.

French Prime Minister Michel Barnier (C) ahead of his general policy statement to the French National Assembly in Paris on October 1, 2024. The budget is being widely previewed as an "austerity" budget that will see the government of new Prime Minister Michel Barnier present tax-hiking and cost-cutting measures that could rile opposition parties on both the left and right, and even the centrists that put him in power. In sum, Barnier's government is a fragile one and vulnerable to predatory challenges from the left and right of the political spectrum. But such a large dose of austerity may make even 1.1% growth difficult to achieve," he said in emailed analysis. "Finally, even if the budget is passed and does not dent economic growth too much, France's fiscal position would still be precarious.

Blood pressure readings may not be accurate unless a person’s arm is positioned correctly, a new study suggests. “There was a chance that arm position was not important,” she said. The blood pressure cuff should be positioned at mid-heart level. To learn whether arm position made a difference in blood pressure readings, Brady and her colleagues recruited 133 adults, 78% of them Black and 52% female. “There is a pretty significant difference in blood pressure readings depending on arm position,” said Kamath, a cardiologist at UCLA Health.

A fourth university has forfeited its women’s volleyball match against San José State University following controversy over the gender identity of one of the team’s players. In the lawsuit, Slusser says the teammate who was the subject of the media coverage told her she was a trans woman. Tony Hoang, the executive director of Equality California, said that in forfeiting matches against SJSU, school administrators are harming all students involved. The Republican governors of both Utah and Idaho publicly supported decisions by Southern Utah University, Utah State University and Boise State University to cancel their matches against SJSU. A soccer team consisting entirely of transgender men has made its debut in a regional league in Spain, overcoming administrative challenges and prejudice to become the first all-trans squad to achieve federated status in Europe. Spain passed a pioneering trans rights bill last year designed to make it easier to change a person’s legal gender identity. Hugo Martinez, 24, told Reuters he faced abuse when he began transitioning with gender-affirming hormone therapy and was forced to leave the women’s soccer team in which he had played. The experience prompted Martinez to put out a call online for other trans men seeking to play soccer in a safe environment. But for its fans and players, trans men having the right to play their favorite sport on equal terms is far more important than the score.
