Spirit Airlines canceled about 100 flights on Friday after pulling some planes out of service for inspections, and the airline expects the disruptions to last several days. “We’ve cancelled a portion of our scheduled flights to perform a necessary inspection of a small section of 25 of our aircraft,” Spirit said in a statement. About half of the Spirit cancellations were at Florida’s Orlando International Airport, where Spirit is the second-largest carrier. Spirit, which is based in Miramar, Florida, has canceled more than 3,600 flights this year, or 1.5% of its schedule. That is lower than the 2% cancellation rate at Frontier Airlines, a similar budget carrier, and rates for JetBlue Airways and United Airlines.

JetBlue Airways said it will raise flight attendant pay next year and provide other bonuses to staff while the union representing cabin crews agreed to support the carrier's plan to acquire budget carrier Spirit Airlines . Starting in November, flight attendants will get 5% raises. Including another 2% raise, a slate of other incentives and previously negotiated raises under flight attendants' union contract, their raises in 2026 will compound to 21.5% increases, according to a company memo, which was seen by CNBC Friday. That’s discouraging for shoppers paying higher prices, but much of the acceleration was because of higher fuel costs. The inflation report was so highly anticipated because it will help steer what the Federal Reserve does next on interest rates. Even though economists are willing to ignore fuel costs when looking at inflation to find the underlying trends, households and companies don’t get the same luxury. Spirit Airlines on Thursday said it will partner with Liberty University, the 10th school that it's working with, to help beef up a pilot training pipeline as the industry continues to face a shortfall of aviators. The program will allow students pursuing aviation degrees at the university's School of Aeronautics in Lynchburg, Virginia, to apply to the company's pipeline program after completing their sophomore year. They must then complete airline pilot training programs, joining as first officers. JetBlue announced last month that its Gateway Rotor Transition Program will teach U.S.-military trained helicopter pilots to transition to airline pilots. Exceptions exist for some, such as U.S. military-trained pilots and those who attend two- and four-year programs that include flight training.
