Donald Trump owns 16 golf courses across three continents, mostly with vibrant social-media presences. AdvertisementAt President-elect Donald Trump's golf courses, his election posed a dilemma: Embrace the connection, or stay quiet? International courses in Dubai and Indonesia also kept quiet, as did the US courses in Los Angeles County and Hudson Valley, New York. But his victory does put a spotlight back on Trump's business empire, where companies could use the connections as a selling point or try to function like a business without a famous owner. Reuters estimated earlier this year that Trump's golf and resort business is the biggest driver of the Trump Organization's cash flow.

Gavin Newsom, a fierce critic of former President Donald Trump, on Thursday called for lawmakers to convene a special session later this year to safeguard the state’s progressive policies on climate change, reproductive rights and immigration ahead of another Trump presidency. The move — a day after the former president resoundingly defeated Vice President Kamala Harris in the presidential race — effectively reignited California’s resistance campaign against conservative policies that state Democratic leaders started during the first Trump administration. California’s move is part of a growing discussion among Democratic state officials across the country seeking to protect policies that face threats under Trump’s leadership. Newsom and Democratic lawmakers said they are acting now to shield the state’s policies that have made it a leader in the nation. “He wants to be seen as a political revivalist, and so that puts him front and center,” McCuan said.

In these conversations with patients who are wary of religion, Callahan slips in another detail: He’s an atheist himself. Callahan is one of a growing number of openly atheist chaplains working in institutions around the country. Though the term “atheist chaplain” might sound like an oxymoron, he doesn’t see a contradiction between his beliefs and the work of tending to the human spirit. Other atheist chaplains don’t shy away from religion at all, instead helping people explore faith and spirituality in nontraditional ways. There may be few atheist and nonreligious chaplains right now, but as Callahan sees it, their numbers only stand to grow.

The striking 3D reconstruction of Zosia, as locals nicknamed her, sheds light on the human found in the grisly grave. Archaeologist Dariusz Poliński, who led the team that unearthed Zosia’s remains, said it was a “mind-blowing” moment when he saw the reconstruction by Swedish forensic artist Oscar Nilsson for the first time. During the course of the 17th century, Poland and Sweden fought a series of wars, so Zosia could have been an outsider within her community. “Maybe because of some misfortune or the death of somebody else, they decided to open the grave,” Poliński suggested. A year after discovering Zosia’s grave, the same team found a child’s remains buried in an unusual way.

In today’s edition, we explore how Republicans are eyeing maintaining their current House majority and expanding their newfound Senate majority after Donald Trump's victory. But given Trump’s decisive victory over Vice President Kamala Harris, House Republicans are feeling bullish about their chances of preserving their slim majority. The party that will hold the majority in the House of Representatives in January 2025 has yet to be determined. Republican Tim Sheehy defeated Democratic Sen. Jon Tester in Montana, NBC News projected Wednesday morning, giving the GOP 52 Senate seats. And the races in Nevada between Democratic Sen. Jacky Rosen and Republican Sam Brown and in Pennsylvania between Democratic Sen. Bob Casey and GOP challenger Dave McCormick are too close to call.

Republicans also flipped an open seat in Michigan’s 7th District, after Democratic Rep. Elissa Slotkin decided to run for the Senate. Because California is notoriously slow in counting ballots, some of the half-dozen hyper-competitive races there — critical to which party wins the House majority — likely will take days. In the 27th District, GOP Rep. Mike Garcia was narrowly beating Democrat George Whitesides with 65% of the vote in. In another California battleground race, NBC News projected Wednesday that GOP Rep. Former President Donald Trump has won the critical swing state of Michigan, NBC News projects, netting the Republican 15 Electoral College votes over Vice President Kamala Harris. Michigan has been one of the nation’s most hotly contested battlegrounds since it helped Trump pull off a surprise victory in 2016. No Democrat has won the White House without Michigan since Jimmy Carter in 1976. Hillary Clinton in 2016 became the first Democratic presidential nominee to lose Michigan in decades, when Trump edged her out by just 10,704 votes. Three global alcoholic beverage makers are likely to see a "negative impact" from a Republican victory in the U.S. election due to the potential for trade tariffs, according to TD Cowen analysts. Guinness maker Diageo would be one of the companies to be impacted by a "smaller degree," according to the bank's analysts. These tariff measures were relaxed by the EU in early 2022, but are expected to be reinstated and doubled to 50% in 2025. STZ 5Y line Diageo Tariffs could "hit multiple areas of the business" at Diageo, TD Cowen analysts said.
