The Kansas City Chiefs will play at home against the Miami Dolphins on Saturday night in what are likely to be “dangerously cold temperatures,” but your sympathies should probably be directed toward the visiting team. I set out to record the migration routes of silky sharks, named for their smooth skin. Instead, in a story filled with twists and turns, I ended up documenting the rare phenomenon of a shark regenerating a dorsal fin. Silky sharks are commonly found in the open ocean and grow to be 10 feet long. In the many shark photos he sent, I noticed a silky shark with an oddly shaped dorsal fin. AdvertisementBased on the healing rate calculated in my study, we just might see his dorsal fin grow back to 100% its original size.

Andrew Kelly | ReutersAfter years of unbridled consumer spending on everything from home improvement to dream vacations, some companies are now finding the limits of their pricing power. Nike last week lowered its annual sales growth forecast and unveiled plans to cut costs by $2 billion over the next three years. "Goods companies don't have the pricing power they did in the pandemic, and some in the hotel and travel [industries] — they don't have the pricing power they did in the immediate post-Covid," he added. Sales growth for companies in the S&P 500 is on track to average 2.7% this year, according to mid-December analyst estimates posted by FactSet. Consumer spending on apparel and groceries rose 2.4% and 2.1%, respectively, from the year-earlier period, according to the survey.

This is the college football season when some very un-Alabama things happened to Alabama. It started when the Crimson Tide lost a game in September. Things got worse when they rotated through three quarterbacks before finally naming a starter. They needed a second-half comeback to squeak past South Florida and then a miracle to win the Iron Bowl. The whole thing was deeply weird and unsettling, like Nick Saban cracking a smile.

Carson Beck and Jalen Milroe had to replace big-name quarterbacks at programs with national title-or-bust expectations. His turning point may have come in the SEC opener against South Carolina, when Beck rallied Georgia from a 14-3 halftime deficit to win 24-14. And Milroe has done something even Young couldn't do last season: lead the Tide to the SEC title game. Then Milroe was back, leading the Tide to a perfect SEC season and making their biggest play in the Iron Bowl. HOMESTEAD, Fla. (AP) — In New York, migrants at a city-run shelter grumble that relatives who settled before them refuse to offer a bed. In South Florida, some immigrants complain that people who came later get work permits that are out of reach for them. Across the country, mayors, governors and others have been forceful advocates for newly arrived migrants seeking shelter and work permits. The administration said in September that it would work to reduce wait times for work permits to 30 days for those using the new pathways. The Washington rally reflected an effort by advocates to push for work permits for all, regardless of when they came.

Why doesn’t the US have more passenger trains?

Today, the United States’ passenger rail system is an echo of its former self, with swathes of the network unused or surrendered to freight. In 1970, President Richard Nixon signed the Rail Passenger Service Act, which removed the requirement that private rail companies provide passenger service. Mike Segar/ReutersBut many American towns and cities have lost access to passenger trains. Can passenger trains make a comeback? The share of US homes without a mortgage jumped five percentage points from 2012 to 2022 to a record near 40%, Bloomberg reported. Historically high mortgage rates and home prices have kept many Americans sidelined from the market. The share of homeowners that are mortgage-free surged 5% between 2012 and 2022, Bloomberg reported Friday, citing data from the Census Bureau, hitting a new record just below 40%. Construction is booming in these states, and the share of mortgage-free homes is high. West Virginia, meanwhile, has the largest share of mortgage-free homes, at about 53%, Bloomberg reported.

Overall inflation among select urban areas was highest in the Miami to West Palm Beach corridor, up by 7.4% in October. Their inflation rate was 1.1%.
