Many Gen Zers purchase cheap goods from the Chinese e-commerce companies Shein and Temu. The Biden administration is taking steps to make more Chinese imports subject to import fees. AdvertisementTwo of Gen Z's favorite shopping platforms for cheap goods could get more expensive in the near future. The trade provision, called "de minimis," allows US consumers to avoid paying these import fees on direct-to-consumer shipments of less than $800. However, import fees could vary by product.

ASHEVILLE, N.C. — America’s largest privately-owned estate has abruptly shut down in Asheville after Hurricane Helene caused extensive flooding and building damage along the 8,000 acre property. The iconic Biltmore Estate, situated in the Blue Ridge Mountains, spans 175,000 square feet, boasts 250 rooms, 43 bathrooms, 65 fireplaces and 22 miles of walking trail. “We are still assessing impacts to the estate from Tropical Storm Helene and that will take some time,” the estate said. In forested areas, which is a large portion of the estate, wind damage is extensive to grounds and some structures.” The post also said crews are clearing roads to start repairs. Last weekend, tree branches, logs and a dumpster floated across the nearby Biltmore Village after the area was submerged in water in the wake of the initial landfall.

New York CNN —The deal reached Thursday evening that ended a strike by 50,000 portworkers has a lot of winners and few if any losers. But that wage deal stopped what could have become the most disruptive US strike in decades had it lasted weeks or months. The strike halted the flow of imports and exports across dozens of ports, what could have been a massive blow had the strike continued. Not that this was the deal that the the United States Maritime Alliance, the group that negotiates on behalf of ship lines, terminal operators and ports, wanted. But it was the one they could settle for after the Biden administration made clear it wasn’t going to intervene.

The move could drive oil prices up further, creating a headache for Harris' campaign. If Israel did strike Iran's oil, it would likely have two main targets. Then, on Thursday, he said the US and Israel were discussing whether the US would support Israel striking Iran's oil facilities. Biden has indicated there are conversations between the US and Israel about whether Iran's oil facilities are a legitimate retaliatory strike option. Back in September, global oil prices fell to the lowest level in almost three years, and the US has seen a historic year of oil production.

“There isn’t anything that we don’t need right now,” said Tim Love, a volunteer at the center. The destruction of major roads, combined with the natural terrain of the southern Appalachians, have made the rapid distribution of aid an ongoing challenge. The devastation in North Carolina and Tennessee has left two major interstates, Interstate 40 and Interstate 26, largely closed down and inaccessible. According to data from the North Carolina Department of Transportation, the entire western border of the state has limited access. Hundreds of road incidents across the region have made numerous roadways blocked and inaccessible due to the damage.

The widening conflict in the Middle East threatens to crimp growth and stoke inflation, experts say. AdvertisementExperts say the escalating war in the Middle East could choke global economic growth and reignite inflation, just as the US is dealing with the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, and China is trying to stabilize its beleaguered economy. "War in the Middle East could exacerbate the instabilities in the global economy, further increase the uncertainties, harm disinflationary efforts, and eventually reduce the global GDP growth," he told Business Insider. AdvertisementKaya warned the conflict could accelerate inflation by disrupting international supply chains and causing the cost of energy and shipping to rise. But he emphasized that hurricanes have historically had limited and short-lived impacts on growth and inflation.

The strike led to fears of a potential escalation in Russian attacks on the Black Sea grain corridor. But according to the UK MOD, it was likely an error caused by poor procedures and aging munition. Tonight, Russia launched a strike on an ordinary civilian vessel in the Black Sea right after it left Ukrainian territorial waters. Related storiesSince its exit from the Black Sea grain initiative, Russia's attacks on Ukrainian naval export abilities have been largely limited to striking ports, and — it's widely believed — dropping naval mines.
