CNN —Ford is laying off about 700 workers who build the F-150 Lightning, the electric version of its best-selling pickup truck, and unlike other recent layoffs this one has nothing to do with the ongoing strike by the United Auto Workers union. The company said overall demand for its electric vehicle lineup remains strong with a 65% increase in the third quarter. It has laid off nearly 2,500 workers so far, not counting those who had been building the Lightning. Workers laid off due to the strike are ineligible for unemployment benefits in most states. But the F-150 Lightning workers who are laid off will be eligible for both unemployment and sub pay, according to Ford spokesperson Jessica Enoch.

CNN —Bill Ford, the executive chair of Ford Motor Company, made his first public comments since negotiations began with the United Auto Workers union and the Big Three automakers. He called on the UAW to “stop this now,” and bring an end to talks. But I will never consider our employees as enemies,” Ford said Monday at Ford’s Rogue Center in Dearborn, Michigan. “This should not be Ford versus the UAW. Ford said the company made a record offer to the UAW, and the strike against Kentucky Truck Plant harms tens of thousands of Americans including dealers, workers and suppliers.

DETROIT (AP) — Ford Motor Co. Executive Chairman Bill Ford called on autoworkers to come together to end a monthlong strike that he says could cost the company the ability to invest in the future. Many jobs will be lost,” said the great grandson of company founder Henry Ford. Ford has 57,000 UAW workers compared with 46,000 at GM and 43,000 at Stellantis. Ford said the strike at the Kentucky plant is harming tens of thousands of Americans who work for parts suppliers and Ford dealers. Fain said on Wednesday that Ford told UAW bargainers for nearly two weeks that it would make another counteroffer on economic issues.

"Toyota, Honda, Tesla, and others are loving this strike," Bill Ford said Monday. Analysts have already said Tesla is winning the UAW strike. "Toyota, Honda, Tesla, and others are loving this strike because they know the longer it goes on, the better it is for them. But a fresh analysis released by the bank's analysts Monday found that, with Kentucky Truck down, the UAW strike has now cost Ford an estimated $517 million to GM's estimated $507 million. Members of Unifor, the Canadian union that represents 4,300 workers at GM, voted 80% in favor of the new deal, which gives them base-wage increases of nearly 20% during the life of the deal and improves their pensions. Had the GM rank and file of Unifor voted down the tentative deal, the union was prepared to immediately resume the strike. Unifor members in three Ontario cities went on strike at GM just after the deadline at 11:59 p.m. Monday. DETROIT (AP) — The United Auto Workers union isn't adding any factories to those that are now on strike, but its president says more walkouts could begin at any moment. DETROIT — Samsung SDI and automaker Stellantis plan to invest more than $3.2 billion in a new electric vehicle battery plant in Kokomo, Indiana. The facility — Stellantis' sixth battery plant announced globally — was largely expected, but the location and timing are notable. Battery plants have become a main issue in the labor talks, as the UAW views EV battery jobs as crucial to its long-term viability. General Motors last week agreed to include workers at its EV battery plant in the company's national contract with the union, which Fain called a "transformative win." Fain said the union expects Stellantis and Ford Motor to follow suit, including battery plant workers in eventual contract agreements.

They note that the job cuts have occurred mainly at factories that make parts for assembly plants that were closed by strikes. In one case, layoffs have been imposed at a factory that uses supplies from a parts factory on strike. The factories that have been affected by layoffs are in six states: Michigan, Ohio, Illinois, Kansas, Indiana and New York. UAW President Shawn Fain countered in a statement that the automakers were using layoffs to pressure the union into settling the strike. Once metal stamping factories that supply multiple assembly plants have produced enough parts for non-striking facilities, the companies would likely shut them down.
