The investigation into the E. coli outbreak in McDonald's Quarter Pounders that has killed at least one person and sickened nearly 50 others increasingly points to the slivered onions served on the hamburgers. The onions in question, according to a McDonald’s spokesperson, come from a single source and are then sliced and packaged as raw vegetables in individual bags and sent to restaurants. State health officials alerted the CDC about an unusual uptick in E. coli cases on Oct. 10. There is no indication that diced onions on other McDonald’s menu items are part of the outbreak. "While the slivered onions are the likely source, FSIS continues to verify the safety of the ground beef used," the spokesperson said.

The president of McDonald’s USA said Wednesday that the company can "restore confidence" as it seeks to minimize the damage from an E. coli outbreak linked to the chain’s Quarter Pounders in multiple states. We took swift action yesterday to remove the Quarter Pounder from our menu. This was swift and decisive action by us,” Joe Erlinger, president of McDonald's USA, said on NBC's “TODAY” show. Customer Aaron Chapa, 22, said he eats at the restaurant a few times a week and consumed a Quarter Pounder over the weekend but never got sick. “I knew it was only the Quarter Pounder that was affected,” said Chapa, who was satisfying his hunger Wednesday with a cheeseburger.

The ball Shohei Ohtani launched for his 50th home run of the season, having also stolen 50 bases, was bought at auction early Wednesday for more than $4.3 million. Ohtani, the Los Angeles Dodgers phenom, became the first player to reach the 50/50 milestone in a season in September, widely considered one of the greatest achievements in baseball history. New Jersey auction house Goldin said it was the highest price paid for a baseball — or any other ball — in history. It was one of three home runs he hit that night alone — his 51st season home run ball is also up for sale. Afterward, attention naturally turned to the fate of the ball, with collectors keen to own such a unique item.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention told McDonald's late last week about a potential link to an E. coli outbreak, company spokespeople said Wednesday. As of Tuesday, the CDC has attributed 49 cases and one fatality across 10 states to the outbreak, which has been linked to McDonald's Quarter Pounder burgers. Roughly a fifth of McDonald's U.S. restaurants are not selling Quarter Pounder burgers at this time. The fast-food chain issued a statement on the outbreak Tuesday evening, shortly after the CDC issued its advisory. Over a two-week period, McDonald's typically sells roughly one million Quarter Pounders in the affected region, the company spokespeople said.

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company has denied that the U.S. was investigating its dealings with Chinese tech company Huawei, following reports that its chips were found in the Shenzhen-based firm's products. Tech-focused publication The Information had reported last week that the Commerce Department was probing whether TSMC had been making AI or smartphone chips for Huawei, in violation of U.S. export rules. We are not aware of TSMC being the subject of any investigation at this time," the TSMC spokesperson added. TSMC, which is the world's largest contract chip manufacturer, said that it has not supplied chips to Huawei since mid-September 2020. Citing anonymous sources, the report claimed the discovery was made after tech research firm TechInsights took apart a Huawei product and found a TSMC chip as part of its multi-chip system.

The 1980 Mercedes was previously owned by famed actress Lauren Bacall, for instance, and one of the watches belonged to Giuliani's grandfather. Another watch was gifted to Giuliani by the president of France after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, when Giuliani was mayor of New York City. Giuliani repeatedly targeted the two women with false election fraud claims as part of his efforts to overturn Trump's loss to President Joe Biden in the 2020 election. Giuliani filed a Chapter 11 bankruptcy petition to shield himself from sudden financial ruin, but a New York federal bankruptcy judge dismissed his case. The reason why Treasury yields are rising isn't complicated — it's because investors are demanding more compensation for the risk they are taking when buying government debt. From a market standpoint, the burst higher in Treasury yields can be told through the "term premium." The moves higher in the term premium closely replicate those of other Treasury yields. However, traders are growing less certain about December, even though the Fed last month penciled in another 50 basis points in cuts this year. "The rise in term premium is the result of higher real interest rates and stronger economic data.

Mike Kemp | In Pictures | Getty ImagesLONDON — The U.K. is likely to see interest rates drop at a faster pace than previously expected, according to economists who flagged key data releases that indicated inflationary pressures are finally easing. However, economists at Goldman Sachs in a Monday note forecast rate cuts "notably below market pricing." As a result, they see consecutive 25 basis point cuts taking the Bank Rate to 3% as early as September 2025, and to 2.75% in November next year. "Recent data have cemented expectations of another cut in interest rates in November. "That said, uncertainty around the economic outlook is high, and interest rate expectations will be sensitive to what the government announces in the Budget," Muir added.

AdvertisementWarning signs in the Sun BeltTrump is looking to flip Arizona and Georgia, states that he won in 2016 but lost to now-President Joe Biden in 2020. In the poll, Harris is earning the support from roughly 74% of Black voters, a robust figure. But it's well below the 88% support that Biden received from Black voters in Georgia four years ago. And the poll also showed that nearly 18% of Black voters remained undecided, in a state where Black voters could make up roughly 30% of the electorate or more.

And I said, well, if they pled guilty they badly hurt a person, killed a person ultimately. And if they pled guilty — then they pled we’re not guilty." Further the victims of the Central Park assaults were not killed." In their trials, they were charged with the assault of the female jogger as well as other assaults and robberies that occurred in Central Park.

Republican presidential nominee, former U.S. President Donald Trump delivers remarks during a campaign rally at the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre on October 15, 2024 in Atlanta, Georgia. Five men who were wrongfully convicted as teenagers in the so-called Central Park Five jogger rape case sued Donald Trump on Monday, saying the Republican presidential nominee defamed them by claiming they killed someone and pleaded guilty. The lawsuit, filed in federal court in Philadelphia, cites several statements Trump made about the men during his Sept. 10 debate with Democratic nominee Kamala Harris. "Defendant Trump falsely stated that Plaintiffs killed an individual and pled guilty to the crime. Further, the victims of the Central Park assaults were not killed," the complaint said.

The House task force on the attempted assassinations of former President Donald J. Trump released its first preliminary report Monday, chastising the Secret Service for poor planning and a communications breakdown that resulted in a fatal shooting at Mr. Trump’s rally in Butler, Pa.“Put simply, the evidence obtained by the task force to date shows the tragic and shocking events of July 13 were preventable and should not have happened,” the report said. The 53-page bipartisan report is based on 23 interviews with local law enforcement officials who assisted with security at the rally, thousands of pages of documents from local, state and federal authorities, and testimony from the task force’s public hearing on Sept. 26. Its findings largely hew to the conclusions of three other recent investigations. A Senate inquiry found that no one was in charge of planning and security decisions for the July 13 campaign rally where Mr. Trump was shot; an independent panel reviewing the failures that led to the attempted assassination called on the Secret Service to replace its leadership with people from the private sector and focus almost exclusively on its protective mission; and the Secret Service’s own internal investigation found that complacency had set in among some of the agents charged with securing the rally site.

Oil prices steadied in early trading on Monday, following a more than 7% drop last week on worries about demand in China, the world's top oil importer, and an easing of concerns about potential supply disruptions in the Middle East. Oil prices steadied in early trading on Monday, following a more than 7% drop last week on worries about demand in China, the world's top oil importer, and an easing of concerns about potential supply disruptions in the Middle East. That marked the contracts' biggest weekly declines since Sept. 2, on slowing economic growth in China and falling risk premiums in the Middle East. China on Monday morning cut benchmark lending rates as anticipated, part of a broader package of stimulus measures to revive the economy. Data on Friday had shown that China's economy grew at the slowest pace since early 2023 in the third quarter, fueling growing concerns about oil demand.

[They're also] more likely to have evictions, have a larger amount of debt if they're denied an abortion. The number of public records, such as bankruptcies, evictions and court judgements, significantly increased for those denied abortions, by 81%. Israel pounds Beirut and Gaza after rockets hit Israel's north

Israel struck what it said were Hezbollah arms facilities in southern Beirut on Saturday after the Lebanese armed group fired rockets into northern Israel and a spokesman said a drone was launched at Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's holiday home. On Saturday, Israeli planes dropped leaflets over southern Gaza with a picture of Sinwar and the message: "Hamas will no longer rule Gaza". In Beirut's southern suburbs, Israel carried out heavy strikes on several locations, leaving thick plumes of smoke hanging over the city into the evening. The strikes targeted "a number of Hezbollah weapons storage facilities and a Hezbollah intelligence headquarters command center", Israel's military said. The United States would like to see Israel scale back some of its strikes in and around Beirut, U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said.

The biggest travel trend of 2022 was to go big, spend big — with people eagerly booking bucket list-style trips to places like Bali, Rome, London and Paris. But two new reports show travelers are now in a very different headspace.
