Nine people were injured as they ran to shelters, after air raid sirens sounded in central Israel Sunday morning. A ballistic missile launched from Yemen crossed into Israel, landing in an open field outside Tel Aviv, the Israel Defense Forces said. The sirens were the first in months, and included Israel's Ben Gurion international airport in Tel Aviv, where local media showed footage of people racing to shelters. Responders put out a fire in the area of Lod, near Tel Aviv, in central Israel. The IDF originally said that a "surface-to-surface missile was identified crossing into central Israel from the East and fell in an open area."

CNN —A California man is facing federal charges after he allegedly tried to choke a flight attendant and “said he was going to kill everybody” while on board a Frontier Airlines flight to San Francisco that had to be diverted on Monday, authorities said. “Flight attendants investigated and discovered that Salva had his hand in the overhead compartment,” the US Attorney’s Office said. During the incident, Salva yelled obscenities at flight attendants and allegedly said, “We are all going to hell,” and “This airplane is going down,” the release said. The flight attendants did not feel safe trying to put Salva back in his seat, and the flight was diverted to Ontario International Airport, the release said. The single highest individual penalty, $40,823, was issued to a traveler who brought their own alcohol on board, was intoxicated, attempted to smoke marijuana in the lavatory, and sexually assaulted a flight attendant – all in a single flight.

CNN —A problematic airline passenger has been hit with an unusual form of punishment – he has to pay back the airline for the cost of fuel. According to the Australian Federal Police, a then-32-year-old man from Western Australia was disruptive on a flight headed from Perth to Sydney. Now, the passenger has been ordered to pay $8,630 AUD ($5,806 USD) back to the airline to cover the cost of the wasted fuel. While charging a disruptive traveler for the cost of fuel is not a typical penalty, other kinds of fines are more common. Ukraine's Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi stated last week that an objective of the Kursk invasion was to redirect Russian forces away from the Pokrovsk direction. But the Kursk invasion has limited the number of troops available for reinforcement. KIRILL CHUBOTIN/Ukrinform/Future Publishing via Getty ImagesGeorge Barros, the geospatial-intelligence team lead and a Russia analyst at ISW, said that the Kursk invasion underscores how Moscow left a major portion of its international border undefended. Even though the Kursk invasion may not be forcing Russia to redirect front-line forces from Pokrovsk, that campaign will eventually culminate. These efforts have intensified since the start of the Kursk invasion.

How Wildfire Smoke Threatens Human Health

This could explain some of the health effects researchers have linked to wildfire smoke, including heart conditions, infertility and dementia. There are huge variations in how healthy people are before smoke exposure, how much smoke they are exposed to and what’s in that smoke. One metric of wildfire smoke pollution is the air-quality index, which measures five pollutants on a scale of 0 to 500. Researchers are just beginning to study how different levels of air pollution might affect health by tracking the outcomes of wildfire survivors over time. There aren’t clear answers on when, exactly, you should avoid smoke exposure outdoors, but public health officials often issue health warnings when the A.Q.I.

Wildfires and their burn scars have made portions of the trail more hazardous and forced hikers to contend with closures on quick notice. Meanwhile, when fast-moving wildfires strike, many rural communities along the trail are finding themselves responsible for helping vulnerable hikers. “Wildfire season is lasting longer, becoming less predictable, affecting more trail, more trail users and more trail communities,” Rylee said. The signals of climate change now stick out on the PCT, said John O’Brien, a California climate scientist who grew up near the trail and hikes on it frequently.
