LONDON, July 27 (Reuters) - Prince Harry can proceed with some of his lawsuit against Rupert Murdoch's UK newspaper arm but his allegations of phone-hacking were made too late, London's High Court ruled on Thursday. Harry is suing Murdoch's News Group Newspapers (NGN) over multiple acts of wrongdoing he says were committed on behalf of its tabloids, the Sun and the now-defunct News of the World, from the mid-1990s until 2016. NGN had argued during hearings in April that the claims should be struck out because they fell outside the six-year time limit for legal action to have been brought. He casts the suits as a mission to hold tabloid executives to account for lying and covering up widescale wrongdoing. He blames intrusive media for wrecking some of his personal relationships and causing the 1997 death of his mother Princess Diana. Overall, Fancourt said it was difficult to say whether Harry or NGN had won. "I do not find this is a case where it's possible to say one party is clearly the successful party," Fancourt told the court. In June, he became the first senior British royal for more than 130 years to give evidence in court when he appeared as part of his lawsuit against Mirror Group Newspapers.

DeSantis’ remarks Monday in Tega Cay, South Carolina, were a near carbon copy of the speech he has delivered at campaign stops for weeks. Over the weekend, a spokesperson for DeSantis’ campaign confirmed to CNN it let go of some staffers, after Politico reported that “fewer than 10 staffers” in event planning were cut on Thursday. Over six weeks, DeSantis had spent $686,000 on travel including expenses for private jets, according to campaign finance records, and his payroll topped $1 million. “In the second quarter, we were a candidate for about five and a half weeks, our campaign raised $20.1 million dollars. Lu Aiken, a member of Republican Women Rising in South Carolina, said she was undecided but DeSantis was at the top of her list.

Tesla directors are returning $735 million to the company to settle a suit that claims they were overpaid. That includes $458.6 million in company shares and $276.6 million in cash, per court filings. That totals to around $735 million, consisting of $458.6 million in company shares and $276.6 million in cash. The $735 million settlement stems from a 2020 lawsuit, wherein Detroit's Police and Fire Retirement System accused Tesla's board members of overpaying themselves in the form of stock options from 2017 to 2020. Tesla directors denied those claims, arguing that the company saw rapid growth sent the stock soaring.

The influential Fox News lineup, which debuts Monday night, is made up of Trump mouthpieces — personalities who have willfully spread propaganda and misinformation on behalf of Trump during his years in the White House. With the surprise firing of Tucker Carlson from the 8pm perch this spring, Murdoch had the opportunity to reshape Fox News prime time. Winding back the Republican Party to a previous era may be impossible, even for Murdoch. Even if Youngkin did enter the race, Murdoch surely knows that his odds of dethroning Trump would be slim. Which may explain his decision to go with a prime time lineup that has reliably championed Trump.

The settlement Fox News may pay to Smartmatic could be around $1 billion, experts say. Disney's $177 million settlement for the infamous "pink slime" lawsuit in 2017 dropped to second place. Experts told Insider that the $787.5 million settlement is a strong benchmark for Smartmatic — and that Smartmatic will likely get more. Either way you slice it, using those baseline numbers brings you above the $787.5 million figure Fox paid to settle Dominion's lawsuit. "It's hard to extrapolate from the Dominion case in part because it never got litigated," Hans said.

Not long ago, the names on the marquee would have been right at home on Fox News: Stephen K. Bannon, Tucker Carlson and Roger J. But Fox News ousted Mr. Carlson three months ago, and Mr. Bannon, Mr. Stone and a boisterous pro-Trump crowd at the Turning Point Action Conference were eager to take shots at the conservative network, arguing that it has not been sufficiently supportive of former President Donald J. Trump as he seeks to regain the office he lost in 2020. At the two-day gathering, with thousands of pro-Trump activists in attendance this weekend in South Florida, jeers flew on Sunday at the mention of Rupert Murdoch, the Fox media mogul, as well as Speaker Kevin McCarthy.

A source from Fox told Rolling Stone that both the Murdochs and Fox News' top executives don't think DeSantis' prospects of clinching the Republican nomination are great. CNN —Three former high-ranking Fox executives are blasting Rupert Murdoch for Fox News’ role spreading disinformation in the public discourse. In a joint statement published Wednesday, the executives — Preston Padden, Ken Solomon, and Bill Reyner — expressed profound regret for their roles helping Murdoch build Fox in its early days. It’s only the latest lawsuit Fox News has faced for advancing false election conspiracy theories after Donald Trump was defeated at the ballot box in 2020. In that same month, Fox News also settled an election-related lawsuit with a Venezuelan businessman who had sued the network. Fox News is also facing another major defamation lawsuit from voting technology company Smartmatic, which is suing the network for $2.7 billion.

In March, as Gov. Ron DeSantis of Florida laid the groundwork for his presidential run, he joined the Fox News host Brian Kilmeade to play a nationally televised game of catch on his hometown baseball field outside Tampa. The questions Mr. DeSantis faced were as relaxed as the tosses. “Locker room gets you ready for the press, right?” Mr. Kilmeade asked. Four months later, with Mr. DeSantis’s campaign having failed to immediately catch fire against Mr. Trump, Fox News is not taking it quite so easy on Mr. DeSantis anymore.

LONDON, July 10 (Reuters) - Allegations that an unnamed BBC presenter paid a young person to pose for explicit photos are "rubbish", a lawyer acting for the young person has told the broadcaster in a letter. The presenter, who has not been named by the BBC or the Sun newspaper, was suspended on Sunday following the claims. The BBC reported on Monday, however, that a lawyer for the young person had written to the broadcaster stating that the allegation was "rubbish". The lawyer said the young person sent a denial to the Sun newspaper on Friday evening, when it first published the allegation, saying there was "no truth" to it, the BBC said. BBC News said it did not know the identity of the young person and had not spoken directly to them, nor had it seen the Sun's evidence.

LONDON, July 5 (Reuters) - Prince Harry on Wednesday fought to take his phone-hacking lawsuit against Rupert Murdoch's UK newspaper arm to trial, asking London's High Court to let him rely on an alleged "secret agreement" between Britain's royal family and the publisher. David Sherborne, representing Harry, argued there was clear evidence of an agreement between NGN and the royal family, which meant Harry was unable to bring his lawsuit earlier. Harry also said his attempts to progress his case against NGN, with the backing of the late Queen Elizabeth, were stonewalled by NGN and royal aides. Sherborne argued in court filings on Wednesday that NGN had not provided any evidence from Brooks and Thomson "despite their evidence having been identified as critical". He became the first senior British royal to appear in a witness box for more than 130 years when he gave evidence in his MGN lawsuit last month.

A white powder was found inside the White House late Sunday, which led to a temporary closure. Firefighters identified the material as "cocaine hydrochloride," the Washington Post reported. The Secret Service told Reuters an "unknown" item was indeed found there. The material was found in the West Wing, the spokesperson added, which is a part of the White House connected to the executive mansion, where the president lives. According to the Washington Post, a Washington DC firefighter on the hazardous materials team said the test results for the substance showed "a yellow bar saying cocaine hydrochloride."

Contrast Mr. Murdoch with, say, Jamie Dimon, the chairman and chief executive of JPMorgan Chase, the nation’s largest bank. Does anyone at Fox or News Corp hold Mr. Murdoch accountable in the same way? One way to rein in Mr. Murdoch may lie with Smartmatic. In its 75-year history, Le Journal du Dimanche, France’s leading Sunday newspaper, has almost never missed publication. But its operations ground to a halt this week after an editor with a far-right track record was abruptly appointed just ahead of a takeover of the paper by the French billionaire Vincent Bolloré, prompting a mass walkout by journalists and igniting a firestorm in French media and political circles. Mr. Bolloré, an industrialist often described as France’s Rupert Murdoch, has been steadily building a conservative media empire, anchored by a Fox-style news network, CNews. The appointment of the editor, Geoffroy Lejeune, who was formerly at a far-right magazine that was fined for racist insults, raised concerns that one of France’s most prominent newspapers could be transformed into a right-wing platform. The paper did not publish Sunday, only the second time since its founding in 1948, and on Thursday evening the website was still leading with news from last week.

DeSantis made over $1 million for his book advance when he wrote "The Courage to Be Free." Ron DeSantis almost quadrupled his net worth in a year, thanks to a seven-figure payday from his bestselling memoir, "The Courage to be Free." A year earlier, DeSantis' net worth was nearly $319,000. The lift in salary was largely thanks to a $1.25 million book advance DeSantis got from Broadside Books, the conservative arm of HarperCollins Publishing that is owned by Rupert Murdoch's News Corp. Since filing his last financial disclosure, DeSantis lowered the amount he owes on his student loans slightly, from $21,284.92 to $18,628.66.

LONDON, June 28 (Reuters) - Prince Harry was a "prime target" for the tabloid press and must have been a victim of phone-hacking, his lawyer told London's High Court on Wednesday as the trial in the British royal's lawsuit against a newspaper publisher nears its end. MGN, owned by Reach (RCH.L), is fighting the lawsuit and says there is no evidence for the accusations. The claimants' lawyer, David Sherborne, told the court on Wednesday that the case against MGN was "inferential", stressing that phone-hacking and other unlawful information gathering was a covert practice. But, he added, the court could find that Harry was a victim of phone-hacking because of the prevalence of the practice at MGN newspapers and the level of press interest in the prince. "The newspapers regarded him as a prime target, perhaps one of the most prime targets, in the sense of royal stories drive newspaper sales," Sherborne said.

Former House Speaker Paul Ryan said Wednesday he believes the 2024 Republican presidential nominee will "for sure" be able to unseat President Joe Biden — unless that person is former President Donald Trump. "It's a disaster if we nominate Trump," Ryan, who also serves on the board of Fox News' parent company, told CNBC's "Squawk Box." Cheney is right that Trump "could win," Ryan said, but "I think we lose with him." "I think we're much more likely to lose — we haven't won anything with him since he first won in '16," Ryan said of Trump. "I'm for anybody not named Trump," he added, "because I think we beat Biden for sure if we nominate a Republican not named Trump."
