CNN —US Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle has tendered her resignation amid scrutiny of security lapses related to the recent assassination attempt of former President Donald Trump, sources tell CNN. Biden said a new Secret Service director will appointed soon. “I think I am the best person to lead the Secret Service at this time,” Cheatle said Monday. “We have to rebuild the American people’s faith and trust in the Secret Service as an agency. Cheatle was appointed by Biden to lead the Secret Service in 2022.

Embattled Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle told a House panel on Monday that "we failed" to maintain the agency's "solemn mission to protect our nation's leaders" during the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump on July 13. "We must learn what happened and I will move heaven and earth to ensure an incident like July 13th does not happen again," said Cheatle, who is testifying under subpoena before the House Oversight and Accountability Committee. She said, "The assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump on July 13th is the most significant operational failure at the Secret Service in decades and I am keeping him and his family in my thoughts." "I would like to offer my sincerest condolences to the family of Corey Comperatore, a former fire chief and a hero, who was killed in this senseless shooting," Cheatle said. "I would also like to acknowledge those who were injured in Butler, Pennsylvania, David Dutch and James Copenhaven, and I wish them a speedy recovery.

On a website dedicated to Project 2025, the Biden campaign describes the plan as a "blueprint for Trump." "As President Trump said, he has nothing to do with Project 2025," said Steven Cheung, a spokesman for the Trump campaign. An official Republican presidential nominee who is also the most polarizing figure in modern American history. Growing talk that Donald Trump could win in a landslide. “There are decades when nothing happens, and weeks when decades happen,” Lenin is widely quoted as saying. To me, the tumult raised fears but also offered hopes and potential turning points — the most significant of which is the prospect of President Biden withdrawing from the race, as it seems he’s considering. Trump had a triumphant and exultant week, but his acceptance speech also underscored his lack of discipline and tendency to hail himself as America’s Caesar.

That cemented a remarkable reality: at the current moment, a woman of Indian descent will either serve another term in the White House or be the second lady. It was the latest milestone for an Indian American community that has emerged as a political powerhouse over the past decade. Kamala Harris in 2021 became the first person of Indian descent, as well as the first woman and Black person, to be vice president. The 2024 presidential cycle is the first one to have featured two Indian American candidates in Nikki Haley and Vivek Ramaswamy. And there are now five Indian American members of Congress and nearly 40 Indian Americans in state legislatures — the highest number of any Asian origin group in the country, according to AAPI Data, an organization that collects data about Asian Americans.

Donald J. Trump has long been a man undone by himself. He imperiled his presidency and political campaigns with personal grudges, impulsiveness and an appetite for authoritarianism. But on Thursday night, with his right ear still bandaged five days after he was wounded by a would-be assassin’s bullet, Mr. Trump attempted a politically cunning transformation. He opened his address by casting himself as a unifying figure, promising to bridge political divides he had long delighted in deepening. “The discord and division in our society must be healed — we must heal it quickly,” Mr. Trump said on the Republican convention’s final night.

U.S. President Joe Biden arrives to deliver remarks on the assassination attempt on Republican presidential candidate former President Donald Trump, at the White House on July 14, 2024 in Washington, DC. "The stakes of this race couldn't be higher, and the only Democrat who's ever beaten Donald Trump is Joe Biden," Coons told ABC News on June 30. So far, 27 House Democrats and three Democratic senators have urged Biden to drop out. The new tally means that more than 10% of the Democratic House caucus, which has 213 members, have publicly called for Biden to step aside. "This November, we will harness the power of our community to defeat Donald Trump and his Project 2025 agenda, and reelect President Biden," CHC Bold PAC said in a statement.

America’s Unstable Politics

American politics was more stable for the past half-century than it had been for most of the country’s history. But yesterday’s remarkable events — in both Washington and Milwaukee, among both Democrats and Republicans — showed how unstable our politics have become. Biden himself has begun to accept the idea that he may have to drop out of the race, people close to him told The Times. Trump gave a speech that was both personal and rambling and that highlighted how different he is from any other recent president. He also demonstrated how he transformed the party over the past decade into a populist-sounding, antiwar, immigration-skeptical movement that Ronald Reagan would hardly recognize.

Roman Pilipey | Afp | Getty ImagesRussia's war on Ukraine could end with the latter being divided into two — like North and South Korea, according to Singapore's former ambassador to Russia, Bilarhari Kausikan. Kausikan said Trump's approach could force Ukraine into a truce — an agreement to stop fighting but not necessarily to end the war, which could lead to a split in Ukraine. Korea is still at war, North and South, legally, but there is an armistice and a divided country. North and South Korea are officially still at war because an armistice was signed in 1953, not a peace treaty. But while increased military spending from Europe will be Trump's goal, it's won't be enough to deter Russia, Kausikan said.

Muni yields are at their highest levels in years, offering significantly better compensation than in recent history. For example, let's say you're in the 35% tax bracket, comparing an 8% corporate bond to a 5.25% muni bond. Still, in 2024, municipal credit upgrades have outpaced downgrades by a ratio of 2.1 to 1, as of March 31, according to Moody's Analytics. The federal exemption for muni bond interestAmid the looming 2025 tax cliff and federal budget deficit, some experts also worry about the federal tax break for muni bond investors, Kozlik said. Although the exemption remained intact through TCJA negotiations, federal lawmakers enacted other changes that raised levies on muni bond issuers.

Wells Fargo says it's time to buy banks as a Trump trade

Banks are headed for a significant period of outperformance in the near term as the "Trump Trade" heats up, according to Wells Fargo. The analyst replaced health care with banks in the firm's recommended sector barbell under the belief the group will outperform under an improved regulatory environment. Harvey added that banks' macroeconomic backdrop is already improving with the Treasury curve beginning to steepen, the pace of mergers and acquisitions accelerating, and consumer credit in line with expectations. Bank stocks are trading at a "significant discount," Harvey noted. That kind of move implies roughly 15% of outperformance over the next one to three months.

Vance was swift to name China the “biggest threat to our country,” in an interview with Fox News Monday as the RNC got underway. He’s made countering what Washington says is a security threat from China a cornerstone of his foreign policy, even as he’s worked to stabilize communications with Beijing. And Beijing – which is grappling with its own economic woes – may be preparing for more friction if Trump takes office. The substance of Biden’s China policy – in terms of sanctions, tariffs and competition – has not been that different from Trump’s, she noted, and Biden has been keener on strengthening alliances and coalitions to counter China together. “But the style of Biden’s China policy is more predictable and stabilizing.

Exactly seven weeks ago, Donald J. Trump was found guilty of 34 felony counts in Manhattan, an unprecedented conviction of a former president that looked like a political rock bottom. Since then, the Supreme Court handed him a critical legal victory that threw those felony convictions and more cases into limbo. President Biden’s disastrous debate plunged the Democratic Party into a rolling crisis. Thursday night, when Mr. Trump accepts the Republican presidential nomination for the third time, will be the culmination of an extraordinary run of good fortune and a testament to his political instincts. His address will also in many ways serve as the Republican Party’s coronation of a leader who went from rattling the conservative establishment to refashioning it entirely in his image.

"We cannot let the challenges of the recent past define our relationships of the future," Starmer said in a Wednesday statement from Downing Street. It comes as the specter of a second presidency from Republican candidate Donald Trump looms heavy over Europe after an assassination attempt over the weekend buoyed support for the former president. Both Trump and his newly announced running mate JD Vance have indicated that continued support for Europe — and in particular Ukraine — are not guaranteed under a second Trump administration. The Republican presidential nominee has repeatedly lambasted the continent's lack of defense spending, and has threatened to pull out of NATO, while Vance has shown ambivalence over U.S. intervention in foreign affairs. In anticipation, European NATO members have been upping their defense spending, including a new commitment from Starmer to spend 2.5% of U.K. gross domestic product (GDP) on defense.
