Amanda Loudin moved from Maryland to Boulder, Colorado but returned home after two years. So you'd think a move from Maryland to Boulder, Colorado would've been the perfect match for me. Moving to Boulder wasn't what I expectedI'm one of the many remote workers who took a leap during the pandemic and relocated. I always thought I'd retire in Colorado, but during the pandemic, I decided to move up my timeline and go now. I don't think people in Boulder are unfriendly, just different from what I'm used to in the mid-Atlantic, where I've lived my entire adult life.

Most US executives don't expect a return to pre-pandemic office life, a study has found. Instead, they expect the number of hybrid and remote workers to increase. The study also found execs expected the number of fully in-person workers to continue to decrease. Despite the rise in return-to-office mandates, one study has found that most US executives expect remote and hybrid work to continue to grow. Instead, execs predicted the number of hybrid workers in their firm would increase by 2.2% over the next five years and the number of fully remote workers to increase by 1%.

Many tech workers in California moved to Austin during the pandemic in search of a new lifestyle. Some tech workers say they regret moving there, given its middling tech scene and "fake" atmosphere. They cited several contributing factors, including extreme temperatures, traffic, overcrowding, and — perhaps most surprising — a middling tech scene that fails to live up to the hype. From Silicon Valley to the Silicon HillsNot long ago, Austin's tech scene was ascendant, with national headlines suggesting it could take on Silicon Valley. He acknowledged there's not much of a tech scene there but will take that over what he perceived as Austin's smoke and mirrors.

Remote workers say their connection to their company and its mission feels increasingly "gig-like," Gallup finds. According to a new Gallup survey, a record low 28% of remote workers felt their company's mission made them feel their job is important, down from 32% last year and 37% in 2020. Remote workers are also on the whole feeling less loyal, which could impact employee retention and productivity. For some companies, remote work fits since employers trust their workers to get the job done. Hybrid and fully remote workers did not have improvements in engagement, though 38% of both groups still report feeling engaged.

The great remote work debateAs part of the war over remote work, employers and employees alike have debated whether or not a mandatory return-to-office policy actually works. With two kids at home, the flexibility of remote work — coupled with no commute — was a boon. The firms that are succeeding at remote work have saved money from giving up office leases and are making their employees feel happier along the way. "You're still in meetings, you're still engaged, but you're not under the thumb of somebody — not treated like a child." Have you quit over remote work, or are contemplating it?

85,000 Kaiser Permanente workers are voting on whether to authorize a strike. If the Kaiser strike is authorized, it would be the nation's largest healthcare strike in history. As this summer — already jam-packed with labor activity — turns to fall, tens of thousands of Kaiser Permanente healthcare workers could find themselves on the picket line. The vote will last through mid-September, said Dave Regan, president of the SEIU United Healthcare Workers West, at a press conference on Thursday. With 85,000 members in its ranks, it would be the largest healthcare strike in the country's history, organizers say.

The full-time remote work the pandemic brought means she's been more available to her spouse, to her kids, and to just slow down a little bit. The messaging was shifting away from what a boon remote work was, and firms were saying instead that they needed people back in seats. Many, especially parents like Danielle, found themselves reconfiguring their lives around remote work and said it's been productive both professionally and personally. But for those thriving under remote work, firms' attempts — or orders —to get everyone back in has come as an unpleasant shock. Do you have strong feelings about remote work versus in-office work?

Amazon spokesperson Rob Munoz confirmed the relocation policy, and said it affects a small percentage of the company's workforce. The e-commerce giant said hub locations vary by team, and each team determines which locations are their hub. Amazon said it will end a perk next year that allows staffers to get one free drink at in-office coffee shops. The company also reduced the amount it reimburses for parking, and stopped providing free Uber rides to and from work, employees said. Amazon said it still reimburses employees' public transportation costs in all major metro areas, and provides free commuter shuttles and campus shuttles.

But, unlike the Great Recession, there's been no rebound in chatting with each other even as more workers return to the office. All of a sudden, life and work could happen on their own terms, and where they wanted it. And some people may not want to socialize, or can't lead a social life the way they had before COVID, whether due to illness or other factors, such as increased susceptibility to disease. While quiet time and working from home might be a boon for work life, there's still the challenge of fitting socializing around it. "Now, on a Thursday I'm more likely to see people like a couple coming in and they're splitting their entrée."

The company is putting in place detailed and mandatory rules for in-office and remote work. See new rules on badge tracking, monthly evaluations, and remote workers only allowed in-office a few days per quarter. Meta founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg used to say remote work was the way of the future . Meta's guidelines appear to be tailored specifically to avoid remote workers having their cake, and eating it, too. Both will be evaluated monthly, for in-office and remote workers, and employees found to be non-compliant will be notified.

Instacart is reportedly planning to go public in an IPO as soon as September, per Bloomberg. The reported IPO plans come weeks after Instacart cut base pay for its shoppers to $4 per order from $7. Demand for grocery delivery rose in the early months of 2020 as consumers avoided going to stores and socially distanced to avoid catching and spreading COVID-19. Instacart reportedly filed for a direct listing in early 2022. Instacart CEO Fidji Simo cited the slow IPO market as one reason Instacart delayed its offering again, the Journal reported last October.

Meta in June said it wanted workers to come into the office three days a week. Employees already approved for fully remote work do not have to comply with the three-day per week mandate. Managers at Meta will be responsible for following up with workers on a monthly basis, making sure they are complying with RTO. It shows how remote workers, or hybrid workers, crave a third space that isn't work or home. As the Wall Street Journal reports, gyms are the latest venture to break into offering coworking space. Its website touts that the gym's members lounge "offers communal work tables and social lounge spaces available from open until close for all club members," where members can "catch up on some work" or "just relax after your workout." As research on remote workers' time use shows, more are using their breaks to work out or participate in other leisure activities. That could explain why a gym-based coworking space is so appealing: You get the ability to socialize, work out, and still get your work done.

Recent research found that fully remote workers were less productive than office workers. A recent analysis of multiple studies by the Stanford economist Nick Bloom, a leading remote-work expert, found that fully remote workers were 10% to 20% less productive than their in-office counterparts. But the research has found, on average, those working in the office at least some of the time are more productive . Even Zoom, which is synonymous with remote work, recently called some employees back to the office for at least two days a week. Bloom recently estimated 60% of Americans worked fully in person, 30% worked in person between one and four days per week, and 10% worked fully remotely.

The latest must-have amenity in luxury New York City apartment buildings: a designated coworking space for remote workers. Apartment developers are building out private offices, conference rooms and even podcasting booths to capitalize on a lingering work-from-home trend. "A coworking space was actually the top of my list when I was touring," said Lauren Wells, a fashion designer and a resident at 420 Kent in Williamsburg. "When I need to meet with a customer for work, I can just bring up some of my work create a little space up there." Rent at each of the luxury rental buildings can run up to $7,950 per month for a one-bedroom apartment, while a studio for sale can cost nearly $1 million.

But in order to fully benefit from in-office work, young-tenured employees also need experienced employees to work in the office as well. Now before the pitchforks come for me, I'm 100% supportive of remote work and I'm fully supportive of employee flexibility and all the great things that come with working remotely. But while many people talk about the benefits of remote work, few talk about its consequences. I've witnessed frequent situations where team members are reinventing the wheel due to reduced communication related to remote work. As a leader, my job is to create opportunities for team members to succeed, but also to be challenged.

Tayfun Coskun | Anadolu Agency | Getty ImagesHow student loan aid works as an employee benefitStudent loan assistance programs come in a number of forms, and the benefit's value can vary widely. So it's worth digging into the terms before you make it a deciding factor in your job hunt, experts say. Total outstanding student loan debt is estimated to be over $1.7 trillion. "With very low unemployment rates, employers will be more willing to offer student loan assistance to attract and retain qualified employees," said higher education expert Mark Kantrowitz. Although, he noted, a higher salary does allow workers to pay off their debt at a faster pace on their own.

A study from economists at MIT and UCLA found productivity dropped when people worked from home. The study observed groups of data-entry workers in India working from home and from the office. Some workers argue they're more productive working remotely. Those in the work-from-home group were 18% less productive than those working from the office. Why data-entry workers?
