The labor market continues to show resilience, with the number of job openings barely budging in late September at 9.6 million, the Labor Department said on Wednesday. Economists had predicted job openings would decline to around 9.278 million, but the number at 9.6 million was more or less in line with the revised 9.5 million a month earlier. Job openings increased in accommodation and food services with 141,000 positions added as well as in arts, entertainment, and recreation, up by 39,000. While that was below estimates of a 150,000 gain, it was an increase from the 89,000 jobs created in September. The Federal Reserve has been looking for the labor market to slow, and on Friday the government will report the number of jobs created in October.

The launch of the anti-Islamophobia effort has been expected for months. Some landowners had put up concertina wire and other barriers to keep people from floating or wading in the river. The counts listed in the complaint include depriving the public of access to the Pecos River and public nuisance. In that case, the court said the constitution and pre-statehood law established a right for the public to fish, boat and engage in other forms of recreation in public water. In its 2022 opinion, the court addressed whether the right to recreational access and fishing in public water also allowed the public the right to touch privately owned land below those waters. While finding that walking and wading on the privately owned beds beneath public water was reasonably necessary for fishing or recreational activities, the court also stressed that the public "may neither trespass on privately owned land to access public water, nor trespass on privately owned land from public water.”

But hours later, after repeated announcements and a search, authorities moved off — and it was still unclear whether Card had ever been at the location, state police said. Richard Goddard, who lives on the road where the search took place, knows the Card family. The evening shootings killed 18 people and wounded 13 others, with three people still hospitalized in critical condition, authorities said. Schools in Lewiston were to remain closed Friday, while those in Portland would decide in the morning whether to open. Ten more will likely be issued once the names of the rest of the dead are confirmed, said Maine State Police Col. William Ross.
