ProPublica reported last week that two Texas women died after they faced delays in getting miscarriage care because of the state’s abortion ban. ProPublica’s coverage in September linked two deaths to Georgia’s abortion ban. “The nature of the strict abortion ban in Texas does not allow us as medical professionals to do our jobs,” they wrote. But reproductive rights advocates said stories about the consequences of abortion bans resonate with voters in any part of the country. Their children now are growing up without their mothers because of our state’s abortion ban,” Black said.

CNN —Texas Sen. Ted Cruz will win reelection to a third term, CNN projects, defeating Democratic challenger Rep. Colin Allred and denying Democrats one of their best chances to mitigate potential losses elsewhere. The Longhorn State has long been a Republican stronghold, with the GOP winning every statewide election there since 1994. Allred, a former NFL linebacker who defeated GOP Rep. Pete Sessions to win his House seat in 2018, was seen as a viable challenger. He attacked Cruz for voting against the bipartisan border deal and featured testimonials from border law enforcement officers in his own ads. This year, he tried to tie Allred to the Biden-Harris administration on inflation, the border wall and transgender issues.

Trump, who is running against Kamala Harris in 2024, has since become a convicted felon, survived an assassination attempt, and chosen a new running mate. Win McNamee/Getty ImagesTrump announced his 2024 presidential campaign in 2022 and formally accepted the nomination at the 2024 Republican National Convention in July. Pence did not endorse Trump in 2024. In 2023, Justice Department prosecutors charged Trump with 37 criminal counts, alleging he withheld classified records from the government after leaving office and attempted to obstruct their return. It went to trial in April, and Trump was found guilty on all counts in the first-ever criminal trial of a former American president.

CNN —While Florida generally makes it challenging for people in the state with felony convictions to regain their voting rights, former President Donald Trump will have no issue casting a ballot for himself today in Palm Beach. The first former US president convicted of a felony, Trump is scheduled to be sentenced on November 26. Under Florida law, if a voter has an out-of-state conviction, Florida will defer to that state’s laws for how a felon can regain his or her voting rights. For other Floridians with felony convictions, the rules are not so simple. A successful 2018 ballot initiative restoring voting rights to those who had completed the terms of their sentence was gutted by state Republican lawmakers.

Voting systems: How we know the election is secure

Musk has used X to spread unfounded allegations about voting systems, laying groundwork to question the election before it happens. To better understand the security of US voting systems and why there’s no indication that they’re not secure, I talked to CNN’s Zachary Cohen, who covers national security, and Sean Lyngaas, who covers cybersecurity. There are three large election equipment vendors in the US: Dominion; ES&S, or Election Systems and Software; and Hart InterCivic. Dominion Voting Systems ballot-counting machines are lined up at a Torrance County warehouse during testing of election equipment with local candidates and partisan officers in Estancia, New Mexico, on September 29, 2022. COHEN: We know people, these pro-Trump operatives and lawyers, have already gotten access to election software – voting software, voting systems in Georgia, copied the entire election database from several counties.

A woman convicted of dressing up as a clown in 1990 and murdering the wife of a man she later married has been released from prison, putting to rest one of the more bizarre cold cases Florida has ever seen. Keen-Warren was arrested in 2017 in Washington County, Virginia, in connection with Warren’s 1990 murder. Initially, suspicion quickly focused on Michael Warren, the victim’s husband, as friends and family said the couple was having marital problems. Montana Republican Senate candidate Tim Sheehy struggled in a new interview to give a clear explanation about the circumstances surrounding an incident in a national park in 2015 that led to him being treated for a gunshot wound and receiving a fine. All accounts agree that, as first reported by the Washington Post this spring, Sheehy went to the hospital after his gun went off in Glacier National Park in 2015 (firing a weapon is illegal in a national park). The ranger said Sheehy told him he had accidentally shot himself in the arm, and Sheehy then went to the hospital for treatment. He was given a $525 ticket for the gun going off at Glacier National Park and paid it, he told the Post in April, to avoid an investigation into his unit. Kelly this week pressed Sheehy about any medical records that would help to confirm his account of what happened; Sheehy responded that those records do not exist.

Whoever is elected the 47th president of the United States will start with a rare and clear advantage: a remarkably solid economy. Tuesday’s election will show how much that all matters to voters, who will soon decide which candidate they want to entrust the economy to from here. But to regular American households, it’s more of a “Yes, but” economy: Yes, the job market is strong, but my boss wants me in five days a week, and that doesn’t work for me anymore. Yes, inflation has fallen, but I can’t afford day care. Prices across the rest of the service economy were 4.7% higher overall, and medical care was up 3.9%.
