New Delhi CNN —A runaway freight train in northern India traveled nearly 45 miles without a driver on Sunday, reaching speeds of up to 46 miles per hour, before it was brought to a stop, according to railway officials. No one was injured by the runaway train and it was eventually stopped using emergency brakes and by placing stones on the track, preventing a major accident. In April 2018, a runaway train carrying up to 1,000 passengers rolled for several miles before being brought to an emergency stop. None of the estimated 1,000 passengers was injured in the incident and the train reached its final destination two hours behind schedule. Today, it runs about 11,000 trains every day over 67,000 miles of tracks in the world’s most populous nation.

Get Ready for a Fashion Vibe Shift

There’s a change underway in fashion. Continued in New York, at Willy Chavarria, who set a family-size table of sartorial intention. And in Milan, was picked up by Francesco Risso at Marni, who boiled fashion down to its essence so it could begin again. Papering in white a cavernous warren of rooms under a railway track, so it resembled some sort of petri dish, Mr. Risso birthed a very chic primal scream. These would not be easy garments to wear, but they sure jolt you out of your torpor.

Half of promised Western military support to Ukraine fails to arrive on time, complicating the task of military planners and ultimately costing the lives of soldiers in Russia's war, the Ukrainian defense minister said Sunday. Warren Buffett shared a heartfelt tribute to the late Charlie Munger, calling his business partner of 60 years the architect of today's Berkshire Hathaway . "In reality, Charlie was the 'architect' of the present Berkshire, and I acted as the 'general contractor' to carry out the day-by-day construction of his vision," Buffett wrote. In a way his relationship with me was part older brother, part loving father." With much back-sliding I subsequently followed his instructions," Buffett wrote in the letter. Though I have long been in charge of the construction crew; Charlie should forever be credited with being the architect," Buffett said.

Warren Buffett and Charlie Munger at press conference during the Berkshire Hathaway Shareholders Meeting in Omaha, Nebraska, April 30, 2022. Berkshire Hathaway 's Warren Buffett said his sprawling conglomerate may only slightly outperform the average American company due to its sheer size and the lack of buying opportunities that could make an impact. The 93-year-old Buffett said Berkshire's group of diversified, quality businesses should provide "slightly better" performance than the average U.S. company, but anything more than that is unlikely. 'With our present mix of businesses, Berkshire should do a bit better than the average American corporation and, more important, should also operate with materially less risk of permanent loss of capital," Buffett said. "Anything beyond 'slightly better,' though, is wishful thinking."

Warren Buffett is about to release his must-read annual letter where he's expected to pay a heartwarming tribute to the late Charlie Munger. The 93-year-old chairman and CEO of Berkshire Hathaway is slated to release his annual shareholder letter Saturday at 8:00 a.m. "Succession is a top-of-mind issue for many Berkshire investors," Cathy Seifert, Berkshire analyst at CFRA Research, said in a note. Buffett's investment lieutenants, Todd Combs and Ted Weschler, have taken on more responsibilities at Berkshire, independently overseeing about $15 billion each. The run up in Berkshire shares may have curbed the amount of buyback activity in the fourth quarter.

Big names boosting dividends as of late include Walmart , which hiked its annual payment by 9% to 83 cents a share. Meta Platforms made headlines earlier this month when it announced it would issue its first-ever quarterly dividend – a payout of 50 cents per share. Government spending, including the CHIPS Act and the infrastructure legislation known as the Inflation Reduction Act , and the upcoming presidential election are also key considerations for companies, Silverblatt added. Dividend growth names, for instance, might offer you lower yields in the present, but you have the prospect of higher future payouts. "You need to know the fund, what they invest in and what the restrictions are," Silverblatt said.

Read previewUkraine is running out of key missiles to protect its skies against Russian attacks, a development that could allow Russia's air force to firmly enter the conflict. But Ukraine has been able to largely hold Russia's air force back from the conflict since the start of the full-scale invasion in February 2022. Reduced Ukrainian air defenses mean the severity of Russia's drone and missile strikes will likely increase — and its air force could also come more into play. But without enough air defense systems "the risk is we see more and more of the Russian air force actually being able to conduct battlefield interdiction," he added. "The Russian Air Force is still a significant threat," Bronk said.

The 33 strikes last year is roughly double the average of 16.7 major strikes a year over the course of the last 20 years. A separate database of all work stoppages by Cornell University’s School of Industrial and Labor Relations shows that there were 451 work stoppages in 2023, up 9% from the 2022 total. So the major strikes of 1,000 or more account for less than 10% of the overall number of strikes. So many of the major strikes and contract negotiations that occurred in 2023 will not occur again in 2024. But that doesn’t mean there isn’t a chance of some major work stoppages this year.

But according to CNN calculations based on official data, the average tourism-related spending per trip was below pre-pandemic levels, as consumer confidence remains weak amid deflationary pressure. However, the most recent holiday season took place over eight days from February 10 to February 18, which was one day more than previous periods. On average, 59.25 million domestic trips per day were made during this holiday period, slightly lower than the 59.29 million trips per day taken in 2019. Movie ticket sales reached a record 8 billion yuan ($1.11 billion) during the eight-day holiday season, according to data released on Sunday by China Film Administration. “The headwinds to growth remain severe and it will take more than a bump in holiday travel for market sentiment to recover,” said Neumann.

In early February, I went on a two-week trip to Europe, on a mission to travel to six countries — including four of them by train. Here are three major mistakes I made along the way, and what you can do to avoid them. While some train rides — like the one from Venice to Rome on the Italian train company Trenitalia — were empty, others were packed. Many European train routes have multiple stops, and passengers simply get on and off the train. At boarding, hundreds of passengers scrambled for a seat, while I struggled to hoist my massive bag up the train.

Avdiivka, to the northwest of Donetsk city, remains the scene of some of the heaviest fighting as Russian forces continue their push from the north into the center of town. Even so, the DeepState mapping site suggests Russian forces are perhaps no more than several hundred meters away from the main supply route into town. Serhii Tsekhotskyi, an officer with the 59th Separate Motorized Infantry Brigade, told Ukrainian television that Russia was deploying large numbers of troop into the battle for Avdiivka. Lying just a few kilometers north of Donetsk airport, captured by Russian forces in early 2015 after months of periodically heavy fighting, Avdiivka has been firmly in Moscow’s crosshairs ever since. East of Kupiansk and the Oskil river, along the northernmost stretch of the battle, an army spokesman told Ukrainian television on Saturday that Russian forces were pressing.

BERLIN (AP) — Germany's state-owned development bank has sold shares in the company that owns the national postal service for about 2.17 billion euros ($2.3 billion), reducing the government's stake and raising money to help finance improvements to the country's rail network. The sale cuts the state's stake in DHL to 16.5%, though it is still the largest single shareholder. The proceeds are to be used to strengthen the capital of Germany's main railway operator, the state-owned Deutsche Bahn, to help it upgrade railway infrastructure, the Finance Ministry said Wednesday. The government is turning to privatization proceeds to help finance improvements to the rail network after a court ruling forced it to plug a big hole in this year's budget and reconsider its wider financial plans. The maneuver ran afoul of Germany’s strict self-imposed limits on running up debt.
