And economists are forecasting new inflation data due Friday will paint a similar picture. The GDP report gave another preview of what could come. Slowing economic growth combined with rising inflation is known as stagflation. To be fair, one GDP report isn’t necessarily indicative of a trend. He repeated that message in a Wall Street Journal interview published Thursday before the GDP report was released.

But turnover rates are worse for women. CEOs are quitting at record rates, and the small share of women at the very top are leaving the fastest. Roughly 1 in 4, or 24%, of women CEOs leave their post within two years, according to RRA data going back to 2018. That's more than twice the share of the 10% of men who leave their CEO job in that window. With an even shorter timeline, women CEOs are four times as likely as men to leave the role within a year.

US President Joe Biden speaks about student loan debt relief at Madison Area Technical College in Madison, Wisconsin, April 8, 2024. The aid package is narrowerBiden's 2020 campaign promise to erase student debt was thwarted at the Supreme Court in June. Biden had tried to forgive the debt of nearly all 40 million federal student loan borrowers, with many people getting up to $20,000 in cancellation. As a result, for critics of broad student loan forgiveness, Biden's new plan looks a great deal like his first. Biden's first forgiveness plan was based on the Higher Education Relief Opportunities for Students Act, or HEROES Act, of 2003.

It’s likely to face legal challenges, which means its implementation could be delayed or even blocked in court, like the Texas law that inspired it has been so far. In addition to Iowa’s new law, Cid says several recent immigration proposals in the state failed to clear the legislature. This bill gives Iowa law enforcement the power to do what he is unwilling to do: enforce immigration laws already on the books. A similar trend unfolded after Arizona passed a controversial immigration law in 2010, says Anand Balakrishnan, a senior staff attorney at the American Civil Liberties Union’s Immigrant Rights Project. Estefania Mondragon, executive director of PODER of Idaho, hopes a proposed immigration law won't pass there.

Even as Russian bombs pound Ukraine, Moscow's mercenaries and spies are busy trying to set much of the rest of the world afire. To Russia, the conventional warfare waged in Ukraine, and unconventional "gray zone" warfare waged around the world, are two sides of the same coin. Human intelligence operations are used to attempt elite capture through the offer of assistance to politicians who support Russian interests. "As the war in Ukraine protracts, Russia has an interest in creating crises further afield," said RUSI. "As a lot of Russia's unconventional operations are self-defeating, countering Russian unconventional warfare must be premised on careful, selective, and intelligence- driven targeting," the study emphasized.

Kim Reynolds signed a bill into law on Wednesday that will make it a state crime for a person to enter Iowa after having been deported or denied entry into the United States. The new law, which is set to take effect July 1 but could face court challenges, joins Iowa with Texas in seeking to enforce immigration limits outside the federal system. Ms. Reynolds, who had said she would sign the legislation, accused federal officials of failing to secure the U.S.-Mexico border and putting Americans at risk. “The Biden administration has failed to enforce our nation’s immigration laws, putting the protection and safety of Iowans at risk,” Ms. Reynolds, a Republican, said in a statement. For over a decade, allies have chronically underspent on defense while the West’s adversaries modernized and bolstered their own military capabilities. Defense spending stayed low across the West not just because of budget pressures, but also because everyone – including the US – was frightened to provoke Russia. However, the nature of NATO allies’ support for Ukraine – much of it direct military support – has exposed the vulnerability that years of underfunding has caused the alliance. Fabian Bimmer/Pool/ReutersThis means that the challenge in front of NATO allies now is not just how can they meet the demand for weapons coming from Ukraine, but how do they reverse years of underfunding their own defenses? Some allies don’t trust that others will be quite so generous with defense spending if the Russia-Ukraine war were to end.
