The following week the two crossed paths again and the photographer let Burna Boy know the photos were his. There was something fresh; it was something that they hadn’t seen before.”Photographer Oliver D. Akinfeleye, aka DrDrummerD, has documented Afrobeats artists in the US and Europe since 2017. Of all the artists Akinfeleye has worked with, he says his bond with Wizkid is the tightest. “Nigerian music – African music – is there to make people feel good no matter what,” he added. The world needs to feel good,” Akinfeleye argues, and that need isn’t disappearing any time soon.

U.S. consumer prices were unchanged in October and underlying inflation showed signs of slowing. We are expecting a significant deterioration in the data over the course of the fourth quarter, which should weaken dollar and support gold," said Daniel Ghali, commodity strategist at TD Securities. Down 45% so far this year, palladium is on course for its worst year of losses since 2008, when the financial crash hit demand. Top producer Russia's Nornickel expects the palladium market to swing to a surplus of 300,000 ounces in 2024 from a 200,000-ounce deficit in 2023 due to supplies, boosted by recycling, outpacing demand. Consultancy Metals Focus forecasts above-ground palladium stocks of about 11.64 million ounces in 2023, compared with 12.35 million in 2022 and 12.89 million in 2021 - meaning ample supplies. In March 2022, palladium was trading at more than double the price of platinum, prompting a switch by automakers. However, longer-term Metals Focus is quite bearish on palladium," said Nikos Kavalis, managing director at Metals Focus.

Spot gold was down 0.2% at $1,965.50 per ounce by 0535 GMT after hitting its lowest since Oct. 24 on Tuesday. The dollar extended gains against its rivals, making greenback-priced gold more expensive for other currency holders. So, there's not much of driving catalysts for gold this week," said Ilya Spivak, head of global macro at Tastylive. Investors now look forward to comments from Fed Chair Jerome Powell, who is set to speak on Wednesday and Thursday. Palladium dropped 2.5% to $1,029.12, after hitting its lowest since October 2018 at $1,016.06 earlier in the session.

Gold bars arranged at the Korea Gold Exchange store in Seoul, South Korea, on Friday, Oct. 13, 2023. Gold prices slipped on Monday due to a slight uptick in U.S. bond yields, ahead of a speech by Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell later this week for more clarity on the interest rate outlook. Spot gold was down 0.4% at $1,983.49 per ounce by 0444 GMT after rising above the key $2,000 level on Friday. "The major factor that will influence gold in the near-term will be the U.S. 10-year Treasury yields ... if you start to see resurgence in yields, gold could break below the key support level around $1,974," said Kelvin Wong, senior market analyst for Asia Pacific at OANDA. ‘Treason,’ the Musical Where the Fans Came First
  + stars: | 2023-11-02 | by ( Holly Williams | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
The catchy, folk-tinged numbers from “Treason the Musical” have been streamed online over a million times, in 96 countries. Its fans — known as “Plotters” — have been listening to an EP, an acoustic record and a live album of the songs, as well as sharing their own performances on TikTok. Unlike “Beetlejuice,” “Heathers” or “Dear Evan Hansen,” which all parlayed onstage popularity into huge digital followings, “Treason” is turning the formula for musical success around. Its producers cultivated an online fandom for three years before raising the curtain on the show, and are now banking on those fans buying theater tickets, too. “Treason” is currently on a 27-show tour of Britain that culminates in two performances at London’s largest theater, the 2,286-seater Palladium, on Nov. 21-22.

At the precious metals dealer Pro Aurum, two gold and two silver bars are placed in a locker in a vault. Gold prices edged up on Thursday, buoyed by a weaker U.S. dollar and Treasury yields after the Federal Reserve held interest rates steady and as investors stepped up bets that the central bank may be done with rate hikes. The Fed on Wednesday held interest rates steady as widely expected, as policymakers struggled to determine whether financial conditions may be sufficiently tight to control inflation. Markets now await the U.S. non-farm payrolls report on Friday, for more cues on Fed's interest rate path. Spot silver was steady at $22.98 per ounce, platinum rose 0.6% to $926.08 and palladium rose 1% to $1,114.02.

Gold bars and gold coins of different sizes lie in a safe on a table at the precious metal dealer Pro Aurum. Gold prices held steady near the key $2,000 level on Monday, buoyed by safe-haven demand from an escalating Middle East conflict, as investors awaited the outcome from the U.S. Federal Reserve's policy meeting this week. While the Fed is widely expected to keep interest rates unchanged, the focus will be on Chair Jerome Powell's commentary. "That should keep a floor under gold prices, which look quite comfortable above $2,000 at the start of the week." Although gold is seen as a hedge against inflation, higher interest rates dull non-yielding bullion's appeal.

Gold prices set for third weekly gain as Middle East war looms

Gold prices were poised for a third consecutive weekly gain on Friday as the Middle East conflict kept investors drawn towards safety of bullion despite a higher-for-longer U.S. interest rate backdrop. Spot gold edged 0.1% higher to $1,986.76 per ounce by 0341 GMT. "Gold prices will be a function of the Israel-Hamas conflict for as long as things are at risk of escalating," said Kyle Rodda, financial market analyst at Capital.com. Gold has gained about 9% as investors sought refuge from the potential fallout of the Israel-Hamas war that escalated earlier this month. But the lingering prospects of higher U.S. interest rates have kept prices below the $2,000 ceiling last breached in May.

Gold nudges up, heading for best week since March

Gold firmed on Friday and was heading for its best week in seven months, amid tensions in the Middle East, and supported by expectations that U.S. interest rates may have peaked as markets assess latest inflation figures. U.S. Treasury yields and the dollar reversed course in Asia hours on Friday, having strengthened in the last session and weighed on gold after data showed U.S. consumer prices increased in September. Before the inflation data, gold had climbed to its highest in two weeks on Thursday, boosted by dovish policy stance by top policymakers who noted that the recent rise in U.S. Treasury yields might make further rate hikes less necessary. Investors also assessed the latest inflation data out of China, the biggest gold consumer, which showed consumer prices faltered and factory-gate prices shrank slightly faster than expected in September, with both indicators showing persistent deflationary pressures. Platinum was down 0.3% to $865.99 and palladium fell 0.3% to $1,140.83, both on path for weekly declines.
