Tiger Woods sounded more optimistic about playing golf next year than he did about the PGA Tour finalizing a deal with Saudi Arabia or private investors by the end of the year. Woods said only there were options, a lot of moving parts and that all sides were working aggressively toward finalizing a deal. “All the parties are talking and we’re aggressively working on trying to get a deal done,” he said. The other direction is working toward a finalized deal by the end of the year, or soon thereafter. Woods also is seen as a top candidate to be the next U.S. Ryder Cup captain for Bethpage Black in 2025.

CNN —Tiger Woods says he’s only prepared to walk away from playing golf when he no longer believes he can be competitive as he insisted that’s currently not the case. “I love competing, I love playing,” Woods told reporters ahead of his highly-anticipated return to competitive golf. While confirming the operation to fuse his ankle earlier this year was successful, Woods said that his recovery took its toll. “Unfortunately I’ve had experience, I’ve gone through it before and I’m here on the good side now.”Woods has not played competitive golf since April, 2023. LOS ANGELES (AP) — Eddie Merrins was known as “The Little Pro” because of his 5-foot-7 stature, certainly not his influence on golf. Merrins died Wednesday in Los Angeles at age 91 after a long illness, according to UCLA, where he coached for 14 years. He played 82 times on the PGA Tour, but never more than 10 tournaments in a year. He was a popular figure when golf came to Los Angeles, either the PGA Tour or USGA championships. “When Dr. Hepler saw me and the club, he started laughing," Merrins wrote.

Tiger Woods is returning to the PNC Championship, the 36-hole event that has become one of his favorites because of his partner: His son. Woods and 14-year-old Charlie are playing the PNC Championship for the fourth straight year, the one tournament he has not missed during the last injury-plagued four years. “It is an amazing gift to be able to share my love of golf with Charlie and we genuinely do look forward to playing in the PNC Championship all years,” Woods said Wednesday. “Competing together, against a field of so many golfing greats and their families, is so special.”The PNC Championship is Dec. 16-17 at the Ritz-Carlton Golf Club Orlando at Grande Lakes. Goldman Sachs paid professional golfer Patrick Cantlay more than $1 million annually in a sponsorship deal linked to the bank's consumer-banking efforts, CNBC has learned. He got paid significantly more when Goldman renewed his sponsorship in a one year extension earlier in 2023, this person said. Cantlay has earned more than $42 million in official competitions since turning pro in 2012, according to the PGA Tour. Goldman spokesman Tony Fratto declined to comment on the financial aspects of the sponsorship, as did Cantlay's representative Molly Levinson. Cantlay still appears on Goldman's website as a brand ambassador, along with LGPA golfer Nelly Korda and McLaren's Formula 1 racing team.

CNN —Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy’s high-tech indoor golf venture, the TGL, has been delayed by a year after the inflatable dome of its custom-built Florida venue deflated, organizers announced Monday. Organizers said the league’s 24 players, six team ownership groups and other key partners, including the PGA Tour, had been consulted ahead of the postponement. TGLThe venture is the brainchild of TMRW Sports, a company co-founded by Woods and McIlroy. Both players are set to compete in the league, for Jupiter Links Golf Club and Boston Common Golf respectively. Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy's indoor golf league, TGL, has postponed its inaugural season by a year until the start of 2025, the organization said Monday. But TGL delayed the season, which was expected to start in January, after speaking to key partners. "This decision came after reviewing short-term solutions, potential construction timelines, player schedules, and the primetime sports television calendar," the league said in a statement. TGL, which counts the PGA Tour as a partner, was founded by McIlroy, Woods and former NBC executive Mike McCarthy. The trio wants to create a primetime indoor golf league to attract new fans to the sport at as the emergence of the Saudi-backed LIV Golf, and then its proposed merger with the PGA Tour, left golf at a crossroads.
