Red Sox outfielder Jarren Duran apologized Sunday night after he uttered a homophobic slur at a heckler while at-bat against the Houston Astros at Fenway Park. Duran turned in the direction of the fan and uttered the slur before taking a hitting stance for the next pitch, the video shows. "I apologize to the entire Red Sox organization, but more importantly to the entire LGBTQ community. The Red Sox said in a statement that the organization echoed Duran's apology, "especially to the LGBTQ community." The latest views from the monthly Survey of Consumer Expectations indicate that respondents see inflation staying elevated over the next year but then receding in the next couple of years after that. In fact, the three-year portion of the survey showed consumers expecting inflation at just 2.3%, down 0.6 percentage point from June and the lowest in the history of the survey, going back to June 2013. That's still a full percentage point away from the Fed's 2% goal but about one-third of where it was two years ago. While the medium-term outlook improved, inflation expectations on the one- and five-year horizons stood unchanged at 3% and 2.8% respectively. Respondents expect the price of gas to increase by 3.5% over the next year, 0.8 percentage point less than in June, and food to see a rise of 4.7%, which is 0.1 percentage point lower than a month ago.

Students and their families, along with college financial aid administrators, hoped the 2025-26 school year would be a return to normalcy. Financial aid administrators continue to deal with problems even as the school year quickly approaches. But ultimately, financial aid advocates conceded that they'd rather have a delayed-yet-functional application than an on-time and glitchy one. There's not much applicants can do at this point to ease stress about the financial aid timeline. Still, Vasconcelos shares three tips for incoming or current college students as the upcoming financial aid cycle approaches.

Kuzmina, 32, is training to be an electrician in Kamianske, a city in eastern Ukraine. Because of worker shortages in fields like driving, mechanical work, and road work, the Ukrainian government launched a program that provides women with training vouchers. But Ukrainian women must still contend with employers and even family members who aren't always on board with more women taking traditionally male jobs. But soon after Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022, Kuzmina's commander disbanded the unit because of a lack of resources. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said last month that Russia had damaged or destroyed more than half of Ukraine's power generation.

PARIS — Everywhere you looked at the 2024 Paris Games, Americans dominated. On the final day of the Games, China is leading Team USA in the medal table, with 39 golds to America’s 38. Its two golds here included the 4x100-meter medley, the first time in Olympic history that anyone had beaten the U.S. Though Russia, a longtime dominant force in the sport, was excluded from these Games, China still achieved a score that far outstripped any competitors. China has also been quick to embrace some of the newer Olympic sports including sport climbing, skateboarding, surfing and breaking.

Inflation comes for your oysters

Wholesale oyster prices soared to triple digit highs in 2022 and only began coming down late last year. The sheer lack of wild-caught oysters is the biggest supply issue underlying market fluctuations, and industry experts say the problem can be traced back more than 10 years. Branch estimates that up to 60% of the current oyster supply comes from farms — a near-complete turnaround from 20 years ago, when 70% of oysters were wild-caught. Qiu echoed Branch’s assessment, adding that the remaining wild oyster reefs are only a small fraction of their historic numbers. “Climate change is making growth really difficult to be consistent … there’s just a whole lot of things that can go wrong with farming oysters,” Qiu said.

CNN —Esteban Wood still remembers the time a 74-year-old Mexican farmer in Homestead, Florida, collapsed on the job from extreme heat. Such outdoor workers include lifeguards, transportation employees, ironworkers, agricultural workers and letter carriers. States like California, Colorado, Minnesota and Washington, have some heat protections for workers but they are not uniform or sweeping. For example, Minnesota’s protections only apply to indoor workers while California’s heat protections include both indoor and outdoor workers. The government must implement wage protections alongside heat protections, said Dr. Kristina Dahl, a principal climate scientist at the Union of Concerned Scientists.

What comes next could hinge on who gets to oversee labor relations after the election. The National Labor Relations Board — which polices unfair labor practices and mediates worker-management disputes — has become an aggressive union booster under Biden. While the agency’s policies typically shift depending on who’s in the White House, the change has been pronounced, labor experts and former NLRB staffers say. Before joining the law firm in 2022, White worked for a decade at a regional NLRB field office under the Obama, Trump and Biden administrations. Last year, the NLRB overturned a 50-year precedent, requiring employers to recognize a union if most workers sign authorization cards for one.

’Tis the season for vacations, so let me make my pitch that the best travel is not lounging at a beach resort but rather journeying into a different world. So I preach both travel and prudence, and on a recent book tour, I found myself often asked about travel advice I had mentioned in my memoir. The most memorable travel often involves encountering something unfamiliar, so consider escaping the herds parading through Paris. A teenager from an affluent family in the New York or Boston areas would step into a different world by taking a ranch job in Wyoming. And this is the kind of travel that is not only affordable but actually pays for the experience.

Democratic vice presidential candidate and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz (L), and Republican Vice Presidential candidate Sen. JD Vance (R-OH). Child tax creditMinnesota's new child tax credit is unusual in its narrowness, but it is the most generous in the nation for low-income households. However, a permanent federal child tax credit expansion could be difficult, particularly amid a divided Congress and increasing concerns over the federal budget deficit. Despite the failed procedural vote, Crapo voiced openness to negotiating a "child tax credit solution that a majority of Republicans can support." Vance was not present for the Senate vote, but has expressed support for the child tax credit.

What’s So New About the ‘New Right’?
  + stars: | 2024-08-10 | by ( Clay Risen | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Over the last few years, a loose coalition of conservative thinkers, journalists, publications and think tanks have emerged under the banner of the New Right. With Senator JD Vance, Donald Trump’s running mate, as its flag-bearer, this still-disparate group has been hailed as the intellectual heft behind the MAGA movement, and even as the future of American conservatism. Its very name declares a radical break with the Republican past — “very nascent, very bleeding edge,” is how Vivek Ramaswamy, a former presidential candidate, described it. But how new is the New Right? Still, there are some unifying features.

While many cities are testing out basic income programs, they haven't been universal and instead targeted specific groups in need like artists, new parents, low-income families, or people experiencing homelessness. Republican lawmakers have introduced bills to ban basic income programs in their states, with some arguing that handing out checks with no strings attached would disincentivize work and raise taxes.

A dozen school districts in Oklahoma said they will not check students’ immigration status if asked by the state’s education department, in the latest sign of growing resistance to State Superintendent of Public Instruction Ryan Walters. “The focus has changed from public school students to self-centered political aspirations,” said Susan Wray, an elementary school principal in Edmond and a former state education department official. School districts also cannot ask students about their immigration status if it may be used to deny them access to a free public education, according to U.S. Department of Education guidance. The Deer Creek, Pryor, Millwood, Owasso and Jenks school districts told NBC News that they do not currently, nor do they plan to, ask students about their status.
