Read previewThis weekend my family went to the movies, twice. This past holiday weekend was the worst Memorial Day showing Hollywood has seen in decades, with ticket sales down a staggering 40% from last year. One thing Hollywood is very good at is generating explanations for a flop — or in this case, multiple flops. (I paid $44.76 for the two Furiousa tickets I bought over the weekend at my local Alamo Drafthouse. I don't think movies or movie theaters are going away.

The newly opened door to ether ETFs is part of a larger story that dominated cryptocurrency markets last week: the industry's political tides appear to be shifting in its favor. Expectations of an approval were low as the week began, but flipped completely and suddenly last Monday — sending ether up 20% . Many are hailing FIT 21 as a landmark victory for the industry. "I'd be surprised if FIT 21 or something like it actually becomes law this year," said Thorn. Now the heat is on for Hollywood to deliver the rest of summer movie season. 1 film at the Memorial Day box office since 1995's "Casper," leaving out 2020, when Covid shut down theaters and halted production. (Leaving out 2020 and 2021, this was also the worst overall Memorial Day weekend for Hollywood since 1995, as well.) CNN —The summer movie season typically starts with a bang during the month of May and, particularly, during Memorial Day weekend. Memorial Day weekend (Friday through Monday) movie ticket sales are estimated at $128.3 million, according to Comscore data provided to CNN. In fact, the US box office is on track to have its lowest-grossing Memorial Day weekend since the $117.1 million seen in 1995, when “Casper” haunted the screens — and that’s not even adjusting for inflation. The tepid Memorial Day weekend continues what’s been a lukewarm start to the summer box office, a movie-going season that’s still reeling from the effects of last year’s Hollywood strikes. Industry experts agree that the 2024 box office has been sluggish so far , but remain hopeful that the box office can rebound by the end of the year and beyond.

New York CNN —The summer box office is off to a lukewarm start. Last summer, blockbusters “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” combined added nearly a billion dollars to the domestic box office, according to Comscore data. “Barring some major overperformances, this summer looks like it’ll be down 20% to 25% in box office grosses between May and August from last year,” said analyst Shawn Robbins, founder and owner of Box Office Theory. Industry experts agree that the 2024 box office has been sluggish so far , but remain hopeful that the box office can rebound by the end of the year and beyond. “Box office earnings have been down largely because of staggered gaps between widely appealing releases in the first half of the year,” said Robbins.

They came from across the country to walk the halls of Congress and show lawmakers the human cost of the U.S. nuclear weapons program. They call themselves “downwinders” — a global community of people who lived near nuclear testing sites. In America, more than 100 nuclear devices were exploded in aboveground tests in New Mexico and Nevada between 1945 and 1962. The 1990 legislation has provided billions of dollars to people exposed to harmful radiation during U.S. nuclear tests or while mining uranium. Etsy CEO Josh Silverman attributed the tough quarter to consumers' continued reduction in discretionary spending. The Covid pandemic brought Etsy new customers and a massive sales boost; its stock price reached an all-time high of $296.91 on Nov. 24, 2021. The number of active users on Etsy's platform has increased almost 70% since 2019, but purchases haven't followed.
