U.S. officials expect that in the coming weeks, Iran is likely to contact individual Americans directly to try to influence how they vote, stir societal divide or incite violence, according to three sources with knowledge of U.S. intelligence reporting on the issue. The U.S. intelligence community noted this month that Iranian hackers appear to have gained access to some Americans’ voting records, as they did in 2020. Last week, U.S. intelligence officials told reporters that both Iran and Russia were continuing propaganda operations to influence American voters and society. CNN —H5N1 bird flu has been identified in a pig in the United States for the first time, the US Department of Agriculture said Wednesday. The USDA and Oregon veterinary officials are investigating bird flu cases in a backyard farming operation that had a mix of poultry and livestock, including pigs, the agency said. After H5N1 was identified in other animals on the farm, five swine were euthanized for testing; two tested negative, and results are still pending for two others. Some previous flu infections in pigs have allowed influenza viruses to change rapidly and develop new capabilities. CNN —Up to 35 ISIS operatives were killed in US strikes against multiple ISIS camps in Syria on Monday evening, the US military announced on Wednesday. “US Central Command forces conducted a series of strikes against several known ISIS camps in Syria, in the early evening of Oct. 28, resulting in up to 35 ISIS operatives killed,” the release, posted on X, said. “The strikes targeted multiple ISIS locations in the Syrian desert, targeting multiple ISIS senior leaders.”It is unclear if the targeted senior leaders were included in the 35 operatives killed. Monday’s strikes are the latest in what appears to be an uptick of operations against ISIS in the Middle East, which have now resulted in dozens of operatives being killed. John Herbert Sawchak, 54, was arrested in connection with allegedly shooting his neighbor, Davis Moturi, 34, in the neck on Oct. 23. The arrest came as police admitted they had failed Moturi by failing to prevent Sawchack's ongoing harassment, following a number of complaints. “But I will say this, we had no reason to suspect that he would shoot the neighbor from inside the house,” O’Hara added. O'Hara said that the shooting was caused by Moturi cutting a tree that had been planted by the suspect and his mother. He was charged last week in Hennepin County with attempted murder, first-degree assault and felony harassment and stalking, enhanced for racial bias in connection with the Moturi shooting.
