Tech stocks have tumbled this week, as investor optimism fades following disappointing results from some of the sector's biggest names. Despite the gloomy outlook for the sector, fund manager Brian Arcese is still bullish on selected stocks within the sector — including Microsoft. The portfolio manager at Foord Asset Management co-manages the Foord International Fund and the Foord Global Equity Fund. Read more These 'all-weather' stocks can protect your portfolio in a recession: Outperforming fund manager Stocks and bonds are struggling. The Foord Global Equity fund has fared less well, although did manage to just outperform the market this year, down 23.3% as of the end for September, the fund's latest factsheet showed.
Fund manager Brian Arcese also believes the U.S. is headed for a recession — albeit one that is milder than the devastating global financial crisis of 2008. Investors who want to be "recession proof" should have a balanced portfolio, he added. "A balanced portfolio is one that is practical and designed to be all-weather," said the portfolio manager at Foord Asset Management, who co-manages the Foord International Fund and the Foord Global Equity Fund. He likens his strategy to a barbell approach of growth-oriented names and value stocks, as well as stocks that fall in between the growth and value spectrum. The fund is down 5.8% as at end-September — beating the global stock market, which declined 25.2%, according to the fund's commentary.

Central banks are relentlessly hiking interest rates to rein in inflation — even at the expense of economic growth — prompting fears of a recession. "Concerns on sticky inflation and a tight labor market have focused investor attention on implications for rising rates and recession risk. Those stocks have high and expanding cash return on capital invested and return on equity, according to the bank. BlackRock says that's now an 'obsolete' strategy Investors keen to add growth names to their portfolio could also look to Goldman's list of high growth stocks. The bank also identified high growth names that are trading at an attractive valuation, including Watches of Switzerland and Standard Chartered .
Semiconductor stocks have been beaten down all year — thanks to waning chip demand and the easing of supply chain disruptions that hobbled the sector at the peak of the Covid pandemic. The iShares Semiconductor ETF is down around 44% year-to-date — a bloodbath even by this year's bear market standard. Hedge fund manager David Neuhauser said he believes Intel now looks "really inviting," with the company having lost a significant chunk of its market value so far this year. So, if there was one stock I would look at, it would be Intel today," Neuhauser said. Against the backdrop of these macro headwinds and intensifying competition in the sector, chip companies are looking to bolster their position.
Small-cap stocks are having a difficult time, even by this year's bear market standard. But Goldman Sachs ' Peter Oppenheimer believes the worst could be over for smaller companies, and names several stocks he likes within the space. "Small caps are down 34% year-to-date. Investors hoping for a respite in the fortunes of small caps could be in for a longer wait, however. Global stock picks While a turnaround in small caps may not be imminent, Oppenheimer believes the sector now looks "inexpensive."
Morgan Stanley believes U.S companies are facing an inventory problem — and it's a key risk to earnings. "The problem with inventory is two-fold: supply chain bottlenecks are clearing while demand, especially demand for goods, is slowing," Morgan Stanley strategists led by Michelle Weaver and Mike Wilson wrote in an Oct. 10 note. Morgan Stanley believes the inventory problem has now become a risk to earnings, with oversupply and lagging demand likely to weigh on companies' margins. However, although a broad problem for the market and for goods producing industries in particular, not all industries are impacted to the same degree, according to Morgan Stanley. The bank found that tech hardware and consumer retail companies are among the most at risk from excess inventory.
But market veteran Nancy Tengler is unequivocal that investors should strap in for the long term. Her firm uses what's known as a relative dividend yield (RDY) strategy to judge the value of a stock. A high relative dividend yield is a buy signal if the dividend level is expected to be sustained and increased over time. "If you can get 17% annualized dividend growth, as Home Depot has produced over the last five years, that's a pretty good hedge against inflation. The company has a dividend yield of about 4% and an annualized dividend growth of 17% over the past five years, according to Tengler.
It has not been a good year for the S & P 500 . But one index is beating the S & P 500, according to investment veteran Jeffrey Kleintop — and it's not one you might expect. The MSCI United Kingdom Index, which includes large and mid-cap U.K. stocks, is down about 5% and 22% this year, in sterling and dollar terms respectively, according to Eikon data. "Analysts' consensus S & P 500 EPS estimate for 2022, at about $224, has been declining since June. Kleintop noted that a key reason for U.K earnings strength is the British pound's weakness against the U.S. dollar this year.
The market has turned decidedly bearish — as can be seen in a lack of activity among long-only hedge funds, said Wall Street veteran Farzin Azarm. Instead, he's seeing a lot of short selling in the market, particularly in the growth sector. Three stocks he loves Azarm could well be one of the few bulls in an otherwise bearish market right now. Unsurprisingly, he's a fan of growth names. If there's going to be a risk to the upside, it's going to be those names," he said.
The precious metal has come under pressure this year, with the dollar's big gain weighing on gold prices. I think inflation is going to win. Higher real rates imply a higher cost of carry for gold, due to increased competition from higher-yielding investments. "They are something you keep in your portfolio, because when you need them, they work and that's the history of gold and gold equities. He added that he continues to see a "very strong" market for gold and gold equities over the longer-term.
Investors may be fleeing the sector in droves, but Barton Crockett, senior research analyst at Rosenblatt Securities, said the sell-off is an opportunity for long-term investors to buy the dip. One such "winner" that Crockett likes is Alphabet , which he described as a "good story" that will be "here today and tomorrow." But the stock has outperformed all its peers in the FAANG (Facebook, Amazon, Apple, Netflix, and Google) grouping except Apple . 'Be choosy' Despite the challenges of the current investing climate, Crockett said investors should remain exposed to tech. "You have to have the fortitude to ideally absorb some of the near-term gyrations for a long-term return," he said.
This year's bear market has left many investors deep in the red, but Dan Niles says his Satori Fund has bucked the trend. Niles said the U.S.-focused long-short equity fund is up this year, outperforming the S & P 500 , which has declined around 20% in the same period. The Satori Fund also holds several long positions, though Niles cautioned that these positions remain vulnerable in today's market. Stocks he likes In terms of stocks he likes, Niles said he favors defensive companies against the backdrop of a looming recession. Niles likes Walmart as a defensive bet that could "benefit from a recession as consumers look for bargains."
The British pound continued its slide against the U.S. dollar this week, hitting a new record low against the greenback Monday. Goldman Sachs European strategist Sharon Bell said the bank expects the pound to trade at around $1.05 over the next three months. Winners Secker is overweight the blue-chip FTSE 100 , which he believes is "arguably the ultimate 'weak FX' play." "The losers in the U.K. are the small-and-mid cap companies that are importing raw materials, which has now become more expensive. The FTSE 250 , which is more domestic than the FTSE 100, will also tend to suffer, all else equal, as sterling falls," Bell said.
It has worked out quite well," Morgan Stanley 's chief U.S. equity strategist told CNBC's " Squawk Box Asia " on Wednesday. There have been several false dawns in this year's bear market, including a summer rally that saw a resurgence in technology stocks — one of the most beaten down sectors in the first half's market rout. Wilson said companies with operational efficiency are likely to do well in the current environment. The bank takes into account three types of costs: labor costs, inventory costs and capital expenditure. Here's what the pros say Fund manager says the bear market is going to get 'nasty' — but says he's not 'freaking out' Want to play the EV sector?
Speaking ahead of the Fed meeting, investment veteran Patrick Armstrong believes the Fed is unlikely to keep hiking rates indefinitely. "I think consensus probably has the Fed getting to 4.25% in March next year, and then probably pausing. Armstrong is co-fund manager of the Prosper Global Macro fund , a diversified multi-asset fund with an inflation beating mandate. The fund was up 4.8% as of the end of August, outperforming major indexes in both the U.S. and Europe. Interest in battery stocks is starting to pick up once again, after a tough year so far. The Global X Lithium & Battery Tech ETF is down around 12% year-to-date, as growth stocks got battered in the higher-interest-rates-for-longer investing environment. And analysts expect them to rise even further, as EV production and sales rise, Rystad Energy analysts sais in a note last week. Meanwhile, 100% of all analysts covering the stocks gave these names a buy rating: Microvast, Piedmont Lithium , and Standard Lithium . And analysts say it has potential to go even further, giving it an average upside of 74%, according to FactSet.
FedEx 's bleak preliminary earnings and outlook sent shockwaves through the market and stocks lower during last Friday's trade. And the World Trade Organization similarly painted a grim picture, with an August report pointing to "stagnating global trade growth." It's one of those tea leaves you can take when you look at the global economy. Investors are not entirely sure which way the global economy, inflation and growth are going. "Investors are not entirely sure which way the global economy, inflation and growth are going.
He believes it is "still early" in the bear market, with further downside still to come. "We are not going to end up with a garden variety bear market. We probably got to do a pretty nasty 30% bear market or maybe even 35%," Smead, who is president and portfolio manager at Smead Capital Management, told CNBC's " Squawk Box Europe " on Thursday. He believes investors are overreacting to the current market conditions and the world is "more ready" than ever for these "first world problems." Now we are freaking out about higher rates and high inflation because they are first world problems, problems we just have not had in a long time," he said.
But as stock markets slid, one exchange traded fund in particular outperformed: the ProShares Ultra VIX Short-Term Futures ETF (UVXY), which rose over 13% last week. UVXY is a inverse volatility ETF with a track record of outperformance in times of extreme market volatility. "Moreover, the challenge is timing these rare spikes with precision, which I believe to be nearly impossible," he cautioned. It's fared even worse on a long-term basis, highlighting why the instrument is more suited as a short-term trade. The ETF has the very important benefit of not consistently producing large negative returns over time, as is the case of UVXY," he said.
