But in a year that saw investors abandon all major tech stocks, Big Blue was in the green. High gas prices, soaring inflation and the Federal Reserve's steady pace of rate increases have punished growth stocks and favored more mature, less volatile names that are viewed as more recession-resistant. Among U.S. tech companies valued at $50 billion or more, IBM was one of only two to generate positive returns in 2022. IBM beats Big Tech in 2022 CNBCIBM is "trading well above its historical range," Bernstein Research analysts wrote in a Dec. 20 note to clients. IBM's model through 2024 calls for mid-single-digit revenue growth, translating into free cash flow growth in the high single digits.
The US Navy's famed F-14 Tomcat fighter jet first flew on December 21, 1970. There was only one foreign customer for the advanced F-14 Tomcat fighter during its heyday: Iran. Rob Tabor/USAFThe Iranian air force was so skilled in the Iran-Iraq War that a lone Tomcat could clear the skies of enemy aircraft without firing a shot. The idea of selling Iran rare F-14 parts so it didn't have to cannibalize its own F-14 inventory was preposterous. It was this concern that led the Pentagon to shred every leftover F-14 Tomcat.

Slated to begin flight tests in 2023, the secretive aircraft was revealed to the public in December 2022. Capable of nuclear and conventional missions, the Air Force plans to use the B-21 to replace an aging bomber force over the coming decades.
The Air Force needs some new bombers. The B-1B Lancer and B-2A Spirit are in the twilight of their careers, and the B-21 Raider, a new stealth bomber produced by Northrop Grumman aims to take over the role as the premier bomber for the United States. Digital design, focused requirements by the Air Force and previous experience by Northrop Grumman in fielding a stealthy flying wing are credited with why the program appears to be on track and on budget. "And that even goes back to the YB-49 jet when Jack Northrop actually created some of the first flying wings.' Dec 17 (Reuters) - L3Harris Technologies Inc (LHX.N) is nearing a $4.7 billion deal to acquire U.S. rocket maker Aerojet Rocketdyne Holdings Inc (AJRD.N), 10 months after the latter's $4.4 billion sale to Lockheed Martin Corp (LMT.N) fell through, people familiar with the matter said on Saturday. L3Harris is a defense contractor that is mostly a competitor rather than a customer of Aerojet. Aerojet's solid fuel rocket motors and other propulsion systems would help L3Harris expand its space defense systems and precision munitions businesses. Spokespeople for Aerojet, L3Harris and General Electric did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Its customers include the Pentagon, Boeing (BA.N), Lockheed Martin and Raytheon Technologies Corp (RTX.N).
CNBC's Jim Cramer on Friday identified three industrial stocks that he believes are worth owning next year, saying he expects them to outperform the sector's top performers in 2022. The best-performing industrial stocks in the S&P 500 so far this year have been Northrop Grumman , Lockheed Martin and Deere — up 36.9%, 35.6% and 25.7%, respectively. Looking ahead, though, Cramer said he'd prefer to own the likes of Caterpillar , Illinois Tool Works and railroad operator CSX . Illinois Tool Works shares are down more than 12% in 2022 because fears of an economic slowdown have trumped the company's actual results, Cramer contended. Transports such as CSX — down nearly 16% year to date — are "totally hated" on Wall Street, Cramer acknowledged.

CNBC's Investing in Space newsletter offers a view into the business of space exploration and privatization, delivered straight to your inbox. Left without rides to space, OneWeb and Northrop turned to one of their biggest rivals in satellite broadband and space cargo delivery, respectively. Space – and the perspective it brings of a single, fragile planet floating in the dark – is often seen as unifying. I've often seen how tight-knit the space industry is – but that doesn't mean competitors are flying off into the sunset together. A programming note: Investing in Space will be taking the next week off for holiday travel.
A B-2 stealth bomber was damaged after making an emergency landing at a Missouri base on Saturday. "There was a fire associated with the aircraft after landing, and the base fire department extinguished the fire," the official added, noting that "there were no personnel injuries." Officials did not immediately release any additional information about the extent of the damage to the bomber, nor did they comment on what specifically caused both the emergency landing and the ensuing fire. On September 14, 2021 the left main landing gear collapsed on a B-2 bomber while it was landing, causing it to skid off the runway and rack up an estimated repair cost of over $10 million. The latest crash comes almost two weeks after the Air Force publicly unveiled its first new stealth bomber in decades, the B-21 Raider, at a facility in Palmdale, California earlier in this month.
On December 2, the US Air Force revealed its new stealth bomber, the B-21 Raider. That may have been an effort to avoid what happened the last time a stealth bomber was unveiled. One reason for that may be what happened the last time the Air Force unveiled a stealth bomber. The B-21 Raider is the first new American bomber aircraft in more than 30 years. Both the Air Force and Northrop also point to the Raider's relatively quick development: The bomber went from contract award to debut in seven years. And we will build the bomber force in numbers suited to the strategic environment ahead," Austin said. The B-21 Raider, which takes its name from the 1942 Doolittle Raid over Tokyo, will be slightly smaller than the B-2 to increase its range, Warden said. Northrop Grumman has also incorporated maintenance lessons learned from the B-2, Warden said.

The kingdom’s Soundstorm music festival, which began in 2019, is back again for its fourth year and will start on Thursday. “(It) is a particularly powerful example because it seeks to bring together young people and women from across Saudi Arabia and the world,” she said. By contrast, Las Vegas’ Electric Daisy Carnival, considered North America’s biggest dance music festival, had an attendance of over 400,000 this year. Last year, Human Rights Watch (HRW) said that performers should either “speak up” about Saudi Arabia’s human rights violations or not attend the festival at all. Some however argue that opening up countries to international norms and values can allow for better discussion on human rights shortcomings.
