The last full day of spring will feel more like deep summer across much of the eastern half of the country. Humidity will make the air feel even hotter, and nighttime temperatures are expected to remain uncommonly high. The springtime heat, which will linger through at least the weekend in part of the region, has already caught some cities off guard. Inland New England and upstate New York began to swelter this week even before cities closer to the coast. In Rochester, N.Y., the heat index — an indication of how the air feels, accounting for humidity — soared higher on Tuesday than in San Antonio or St. Petersburg, Fla.

WASHINGTON — Lawmakers on Capitol Hill are scrambling to address the boom in deepfake AI pornographic images, which have targeted everyone from celebrities to high school students. Now, a new bill will seek to hold social media companies accountable for policing and removing deepfake porn images published on their sites. The measure would criminalize publishing or threatening to publish deepfake porn. Additionally, the sites would also have to make a reasonable effort to remove any other copies of the images, including ones shared in private groups. They will be joined in the Capitol by victims of deepfake porn, including high school students.

Kushner started Affinity in 2021, shortly after leaving his advisory role in the White House alongside his wife, Ivanka Trump. Neumann, who was ultimately ousted from WeWork by top SoftBank execs, introduced Kushner to Unybrands early the following year. Affinity's investment in Unybrands, which hasn't previously been reported, was one of the private equity firm's earliest deals. Following a continued slide, the company laid off roughly 10% of its staff in November 2022, according to people familiar with the matter. The House Oversight Committee launched an investigation into the investment in 2022, looking into whether Kushner's financial interests influenced Trump's foreign policy.

Opinion | The Israeli Hostage Rescue, and the Cost

To the Editor:Re “Israel’s Rescue Euphoria Fades as Troubles Linger” (news analysis, front page, June 10):I think the article misses the point. Yes, only four hostages were freed as a result of Israel’s military operation. Yet the message to Hamas and those Palestinian civilians who are hiding Israeli hostages is clear: Israel will act to free those hostages, regardless of the cost. The way to avoid such hazards, however, is clear: Hamas should free the hostages — all of them. If your children were being held hostage by a terrorist organization, would you be concerned about world opinion — yet alone show restraint?

Normally at this time of year, the grassy southeastern corner of Eisenhower Park in East Meadow, N.Y., is a place for softball games, family picnics and a few cricket players enjoying a warm weekend afternoon. On Sunday, that space was transformed into a stage for one of the most-watched global sporting events of the year. More than 34,000 fans and cricket dignitaries squeezed into a temporary stadium built in the last three months in the Long Island park to watch the most anticipated match of the T20 Cricket World Cup: India versus Pakistan. For about three hours, fans in blue and orange India shirts mingled with their (vastly outnumbered) rivals in the dark green of Pakistan, producing a festive and vibrant atmosphere.

A start-up stock exchange headquartered in Dallas and backed by the financial powerhouses BlackRock and Citadel Securities is set to challenge the dominance of the New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq in the listing and trading of companies and funds. The Texas Stock Exchange, or TXSE, has raised roughly $120 million from more than two dozen investors, including BlackRock and Citadel Securities as well as some unnamed business leaders, according to a statement on Wednesday. The exchange has yet to register with the Securities and Exchange Commission, which will be its primary regulator, but intends to do so later this year. It cannot begin operating without the S.E.C.’s approval. The announcement of the exchange was first reported by The Wall Street Journal.

Donald J. Trump’s lawyers on Tuesday asked the judge who oversaw the former president’s criminal trial to lift a gag order on their client as the presidential campaign intensifies. The lawyers said in a letter to the judge, Juan M. Merchan, that the end of the trial on Thursday nullified the need for the gag order, which bars the former president from attacking witnesses, the jury and others involved in the case. Mr. Trump was convicted of 34 felonies, with a jury determining that he had falsified documents related to a hush-money payment his former fixer made to a porn star in 2016. “Now that the trial is concluded, the concerns articulated by the government and the court do not justify continued restrictions on the First Amendment rights of President Trump,” the lawyers, Todd Blanche and Emil Bove, wrote in the letter.

In New York, the state legislative session runs for roughly 60 days spread out from January to early June, but most of the actual passing of laws occurs over two periods. Kathy Hochul rush to squeeze in legislative priorities they couldn’t shoehorn into the budget. In most years, the Legislature passes roughly 1,000 bills for the governor to sign or veto. Some proposals, like a measure that would restrict social media companies from using algorithms on minors, are known to have the backing of Ms. Hochul, a centrist Democrat from Buffalo. Others — like a bill restricting state business with companies that contribute to tropical deforestation — seem likely to face a steeper road to becoming law.

In recent weeks, the scene outside the criminal courthouse in Downtown Manhattan where former President Donald Trump was standing trial was one of relatively orderly anticipation. Beginning early each morning, a crowd — made up mainly of journalists and Trump supporters dressed to the nines in MAGA regalia — would begin to form outside the building, everyone settling in to await news of what was going on inside. The N.Y.P.D. had a sizable presence on the scene and had set up barricades around the courthouse entrance. But such precautions were hardly necessary.

In the summer of 1974, I was working as a waiter at the White Elephant, the grande dame of Nantucket hotels, a rambling gray-shingled pile that sits right on the island’s harbor. Thinking about it still makes me cringe. I had not been back inside the White Elephant in almost 50 years when, last spring, I returned to the island to check into the famous inn as a guest, size up its recent multimillion dollar makeover at the hands of the Boston architectural firm Elkus Manfredi, and ponder the ways in which both the island and I had changed. Though it’s hard to believe today, when Nantucket airport is filled with rows of private planes that have delivered their owners to this island 30 miles off the coast of Cape Cod, many people clucked at Elizabeth T. Ludwig’s hotel when it opened a century ago. Without the social cachet of more accessible resorts like Newport, R.I., or Saratoga Springs, N.Y., it struck many people as folly to believe the swell set would spend their holidays on Nantucket.

Caleb Carr, Author of Dark Histories, Dies at 68
  + stars: | 2024-05-24 | by ( Penelope Green | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Caleb Carr, a military historian and author whose experience of childhood abuse drove him to explore the roots of violence — most famously in his 1994 best seller, “The Alienist,” a period thriller about the hunt for a serial killer in 19th-century Manhattan — died on Thursday at his home in Cherry Plains, N.Y. The cause was cancer, his brother Ethan Carr said. Mr. Carr had first pitched the book as nonfiction; it wasn’t, but it read that way because of the exhaustive research he did into the period. And he peopled his novel with historical figures like Theodore Roosevelt, who was New York’s reforming police commissioner before his years in the White House. Up to that point, Mr. Carr had been writing, with modest success, on military matters.
