Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz said the storm's confirmed death toll climbed to 13 on Sunday, up from three reported overnight in the Buffalo region. The latest victims included some found in cars and some in snow banks, Poloncarz said, adding that the death tally would likely rise further. New York Governor Kathy Hochul called it an "epic, once-in-a-lifetime" weather disaster that ranked as the fiercest winter storm to hit the greater Buffalo area since a crippling 1977 blizzard that killed nearly 30 people. The greater Buffalo region, lying at the edge of Lake Erie near the Canadian border was one of the hardest-hit places. The valley has become almost a small town, with several Quonset-style huts erected for workers. In many places, poverty, powerful interests and a lack of law enforcement make habitat loss especially hard to address. An aerial of the Strategic Petroleum Reserve storage at the Bryan Mound site seen on October 19, 2022 in Freeport, Texas. The Biden administration is considering tapping additional reserves of heating and crude oil as winter nears and uncertainty over market prices worsens, according to four people familiar with the matter. But with a 54% jump in heating oil prices in the last year, any hiccup in supply could mean a headache for consumers. The White House could face additional pressure from a Republican-led House of Representatives to replenish the Strategic Petroleum Reserve when the new Congress begins its session in January. In June, the leading Republicans on the House Energy & Commerce Committee suggested the Strategic Petroleum Reserve's falling level was becoming a national security risk.
The 45-year-old had spent hours walking to the district of Cugenang where his relatives lived until disaster struck on Monday. The death toll from the quake in Indonesia's most populous province of West Java was 252 and expected to rise, officials said. Everything was buried," Aris said, gesturing at a huge mound of brown earth where his brother's home had stood. The shallow quake that struck in a mountainous area early on Monday afternoon triggered a landslide that authorities say has buried at least one village. Sen. Mitt Romney compared former President Donald Trump to an "aging pitcher" on the mound. Romney blamed Trump for the GOP's showing, calling him an "albatross" on electoral prospects. "I think President Trump was an albatross on the electoral prospects for some of our candidates," Romney told MSNBC's Saul Kapur. It's like the aging pitcher who keeps losing games," Romney added. In May, he said it's likely Trump would easily become the 2024 Republican presidential nominee if he runs.

KYIV, Nov 11 (Reuters) - Six people were killed in a Russian missile attack on an apartment building in the southern Ukrainian city of Mykolaiv early on Friday, Mayor Oleksandr Senkevych said. Rescuers were digging through the debris for survivors, Senkevych wrote on the Telegram messaging app. Photographs posted by Senkevych showed a gaping hole in the multi-storey building and emergency workers combing through a mound of rubble. Ukrainian forces are steadily advancing further south towards the nearby city of Kherson, from which Russia has said its forces are withdrawing after occupying it since March. In an interview with Reuters on Thursday, Ukrainian Defence Minister Oleksii Reznikov said it would take at least a week for Russian troops to leave Kherson.
A Tennessee man broke down the door of his ex-girlfriend’s home, kidnapped and attacked her in a rage, upset that he did not receive a lottery ticket and claiming she owed him money, authorities said. She told officers he was upset “due to him not receiving his lottery ticket and money he felt he was owed." It's not clear if she had a lottery ticket on his behalf. The woman told officers she couldn’t breathe for about five seconds, according to the affidavit. Hanes allegedly continued to ask for money, specifically $10,000 and she said she didn’t have that type of money to give him.

Following Wednesday's trade, Jim Cramer's Charitable Trust will own 125 shares of PXD, increasing its weighting in the portfolio to 1.13% from 0.90%. Energy stocks pulled back Wednesday, as oil prices tumbled on the back of a higher-than-expected crude inventory build in the U.S., according to data from the American Petroleum Institute. West Texas Intermediate crude — the U.S. oil benchmark — was trading down more than 2%, at around $87 a barrel. The SPR will also need to be refilled eventually, which should be bullish for oil prices. Elevated energy prices will translate to bountiful free cash flow generation for Pioneer, ultimately leading to very healthy shareholder returns.
Javier and Houston’s bullpen combined on just the second no-hitter in World Series history, silencing a booming lineup and boisterous fans as the Astros blanked the Phillies 5-0 Wednesday night to even the matchup at two games each. The only previous no-hitter in the World Series was a perfect game by Don Larsen of the New York Yankees against the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1956. Astros ace Justin Verlander will again chase that elusive first World Series win when he faces Noah Syndergaard. Up NextAstros: Verlander is 0-6 with a 6.07 ERA in eight World Series starts after failing to hold a five-run lead in the opener. Don Larsen threw a perfect game in the 1956 World Series and the Phillies' Roy Halladay tossed a no-hitter in the 2010 Division Series in a game that was also played at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia. Astros catcher Christian Vazquez said Wednesday's win was all the more special because it guarantees the series will return to Houston for a Game Six on Saturday and, if necessary, Game Seven on Sunday. Javier told reporters that he could return to the mound in Game Seven on three day's rest if needed.

McCullers became the first pitcher in World Series history to give up five home runs in a game but Astros manager Dusty Baker said he did not believe the righty was inadvertently tipping his pitches. The Astros will look to avoid falling behind 3-1 in the best-of-seven series when they send Cristian Javier to the mound for Game Four on Wednesday in Philadelphia. The Phillies will counter with Game One starter Aaron Nola, who will be working on normal rest due to the postponement of Monday's game.
SEOUL—At 4 a.m. on Sunday, Jung Hyeon-ji woke up to grab some water and scrolled through news about the deadly night in Seoul’s club district of Itaewon. What she saw still terrorizes her. The 21-year-old university student had taken to Twitter, where she encountered a barrage of raw footage from the cramped alleyway where hundreds of Halloween revelers were fatally crushed and severely injured. She saw police yanking people from a mound of tangled bodies. Ms. Jung said she could even make out faces—with some having turned pale or blue.

[1/3] Oct 31, 2022; Philadelphia, PA, USA; The rain tarp on the field before game three of the 2022 World Series between the Philadelphia Phillies and the Houston Astros at Citizens Bank Park. John Geliebter-USA TODAY SportsOct 31 (Reuters) - Game Three of the World Series between the host Philadelphia Phillies and Houston Astros originally scheduled for Monday was postponed due to inclement weather and a forecast for sustained rainfall throughout the evening. The Astros were set to send right-handed pitcher Lance McCullers Jr. to the mound for Monday's game while the Phillies were going to counter with right-hander Noah Syndergaard. Phillies left-hander Ranger Suarez will now start Tuesday's contest while the Astros will stick with McCullers as their Game Three starter. A potential Game Six would be played on Saturday -- which would make it the latest World Series game in terms of date -- with a decisive Game Seven, if necessary, set for Sunday.

Oct 30 (Reuters) - Houston Astros pitcher Lance McCullers Jr. will make his long-awaited return to the World Series stage after missing last year's Fall Classic with a forearm injury that left him in an even more stressful role as a spectator. "There's always more nerves when you're watching, especially from the dugout," McCullers told reporters on Saturday after the Astros beat the Phillies 5-2. "I think about some of the big games we've played in this park and the World Series, things like that. It's always way more, I'm always way more nervous in the dugout than when I'm outside of it." I think it's when you get to experience the most raw and real atmospheres in all the game," said McCullers.

Boone urges consistency as pressure mounts for Yankees

NEW YORK, Oct 21 (Reuters) - New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone said on Friday he is preaching consistency at the plate despite a demoralizing 0-2 start to the ALCS on the road against hated rivals Houston Astros. "Hopefully he can eliminate, hold them down and get us off to a good start, and then we can do enough offensively," Boone told reporters. The Yankees have their work cut out for them to reverse the momentum after the Astros threw 30 strikeouts through the first two games, an alarming statistic that Boone said was unacceptable. "And sometimes when you get so focused on, 'I'm going to go touch the ball', you start expanding the strike zone. And when you do that against a Houston Astro pitching staff you're in trouble and you're playing into their hands."
A contractor works on a crude oil pipeline at the U.S. Department of Energy's Bryan Mound Strategic Petroleum Reserve in Freeport, Texas, in 2016. There are now about 400 million barrels of crude oil left in the SPR. Since its establishment, only three presidents other than Biden have directed the sale of oil from the petroleum reserve, while exchanges have been more common. Barack Obama directed the release of 30 million barrels in 2011 to offset supply disruptions caused by Libya’s civil war; in 2005, George W. LOS ANGELES—The San Diego Padres, an hour or so from advancing to a National League division series against the Los Angeles Dodgers, stood by as six umpires ascended the pitcher’s mound Sunday night in Queens. The Padres were ahead and the opposing manager, a respected leader who had already made a show of collecting baseballs he may or may not have been suspicious of, apparently had decided that if the Padres were winning they must be cheating. Or maybe it was the way they were winning.
