SummaryCompanies Toyota suspends production at all 14 domestic assembly plantsSystem failure preventing Toyota from ordering partsCause under investigation, not likely to be a cyberattackPlants make up third of Toyota world output -Reuters calculationStock closes down 0.2%TOKYO, Aug 29 (Reuters) - Toyota Motor (7203.T) will restart operations at its assembly plants in Japan on Wednesday, after a production system malfunction brought domestic output to a halt at the world's biggest-selling automaker. The plants together account for about a third of the automaker's global production, Reuters calculations showed. Toyota's domestic production had been on the rebound after a series of output cuts it blamed on semiconductor shortages. Its Japan output averaged about 13,500 vehicles daily in the first half of the year, Reuters calculations showed. Toyota is a pioneer of just-in-time inventory management, which keeps down costs but means supply chain snarls put production at risk.

CNN —Ford has just unveiled the 800-horsepower Ford Mustang GTD which will be available in late 2024 or early 2025 at a starting price around $300,000. “Ford vs. Ferrari” recounted the 1960s Le Mans races won by the Ford GT40 race car which was developed specifically to spite the Italian automaker after Ford couldn’t buy the company. In the 2000s, Ford has produced two modern versions of the Ford GT that have both become highly collectible. The Ford Mustang GTD's body is made almost entirely from carbon fiber. Justice Clarence Thomas met the recreational vehicle of his dreams in Phoenix, on a November Friday in 1999. With some time to kill before an event that night, he headed to a dealership just west of the airport. In the words of one of his biographers, “he kicked the tires and climbed aboard,” then quickly negotiated a handshake deal. A few weeks later, Justice Thomas drove his new motor coach off the lot and into his everyman, up-by-the-bootstraps self-mythology. “I don’t have any problem with going to Europe, but I prefer the United States, and I prefer seeing the regular parts of the United States,” he told the filmmakers, adding: “There’s something normal to me about it.

Land Cruiser models are relatively big cars that come with a higher profitability for Toyota, just as is the case for some other models such as its Alphard van, said Seiji Sugiura, an analyst at Tokai Tokyo Research Institute. The new Land Cruiser will become available in Japan in the first half of 2024, and come to the United States in the spring of that year, Toyota said, adding that suggested retail pricing in the United States will start in the mid-$50,000 range. Toyota said it will offer gasoline and diesel-powered versions of the new Land Cruiser in markets such as Western and Eastern Europe and the Middle East, and also bring a smaller Land Cruiser version to Japan in the winter. The Land Cruiser and the Lexus LX and GX, which are luxury SUVs, have together sold 11.3 million units as of the end of last month, Toyota said.

Just when Chinese electric car companies may be needing the cash, foreign automakers need the market — not only in China but globally. Volkswagen isn't faring much better in China's electric car market, with an average of just over 10,000 vehicles delivered each month in the first half of the year. China's homegrown electric car brands from BYD to Zeekr have piled into the local market, where Tesla still commands a hefty share. Li Auto was the only one of the three U.S.-listed Chinese electric car companies to have the healthiest reading above 1, according to a Wind Information screen for the first quarter. China's electric car market is set to grow by 27% this year to 8.7 million units — and remain the largest in the world in coming years, according to Bank of America Securities.

SEOUL, July 28 (Reuters) - SK Innovation Co Ltd (096770.KS), owner of South Korea's top refiner SK Energy, said on Friday it expects refining margins to gradually improve in the second half thanks to favourable market conditions backed by solid travel season demand. Analysts said SK Innovation's refining business had been hit by declines in refining margins and oil prices, while its battery business had continued generating losses due to costs related to its newly set up U.S. battery plants. SK Innovation's battery unit SK On, which was split off last year, accounted for about 20% of the company's revenue in the second quarter. SK Innovation said it expects its battery unit's profitability to improve in the second half thanks to the U.S. tax subsidies from the Inflation Reduction Act. Shares of SK Innovation were trading down 0.9%, versus benchmark KOSPI's (.KS11) 0.5% fall at 0210 GMT.

Companies Ford Motor Co FollowWASHINGTON, July 28 (Reuters) - Ford Motor (F.N) said Friday it is recalling 870,000 F-150 trucks in the United States because of the risk of an unexpected activation of the electric parking brake due to a potential wiring issue. The recall covers 2021 through 2023 model year F-150 trucks, according to a filing with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). It covers trucks equipped with a single exhaust system. Contact with the rear axle housing may damage the wiring harness, causing the electric parking brake to activate unexpectedly, the automaker said. Of those, 299 indicated the electric parking brake had activated unintentionally including 19 while driving.

Companies Ford Motor Co FollowJuly 27 (Reuters) - Ford Motor (F.N) on Thursday raised its annual pre-tax profit expectation, as improving supply chains helped the automaker produce more pickup trucks and crossover family-SUVs to meet sustained demand from consumers. An improvement in the overall supply chain has aided automakers to ramp up production and get enough vehicles to dealer lots on time to meet a strong demand for personal mobility. Better offers and financing options on vehicles has also swayed more consumers to consider purchasing new vehicles in place of used vehicles and leasing options. The company now expects pre-tax profit for the year to come in between $11 billion and $12 billion, compared with its prior forecast of $9 billion to $11 billion.
