As the parent of an only child, I often field questions like, "Does she have any siblings?" I considered having more kids before I got pregnantAt one point, I considered having more than one child. Unsurprisingly, my husband was fully on board with never, ever having to go through it all again. Being a mother is still incredibly challenging for meAs an only child my daughter does get more by default. President Emmanuel Macron called the snap elections Sunday after his party lost to the far right in a vote for EU lawmakers, a shock move that rattled markets for French stocks and government bonds. There has been widespread speculation since then that the National Rally, the party of far-right doyenne Marine Le Pen, is poised to become the most powerful force in parliament, unseating Macron’s centrist bloc. The risk of something similar happening in France is real, according to the country’s finance minister, Bruno Le Maire. “This comes down to the (parties’) plans that are on the table, whether we can, yes or no, finance this debt,” Le Maire said. The National Rally has promised to raise public spending and slash VAT on electricity and fuel.

Gas prices today are not cheap – but they are miles away from that point. Of course, gas prices were cheaper during the Covid-19 pandemic because demand was severely low. In part because they are so visible, gas prices play a key psychological role in how people feel about the economy. “But there is more work to be done — the President remains committed to lowering prices at the pump for Americans and maintaining a stable and secure energy supply.”Real gas prices are cheaper than in 2018Many people may wish for the $2 gas prices of last decade. “Inventories are likely headed back to normal levels, which will keep gasoline prices lower throughout the summer driving season.

Officials penciled in just one rate cut this year, according to their latest economic projections, compared to the three they forecast in March. They also expect inflation to be more stubborn this year than they thought in the spring, according to their forecasts. The Fed has kept interest rates at a 23-year high for nearly a year, after kicking off an aggressive rate-hiking campaign in March 2022. Here are key takeaways from the Fed’s latest decision on interest rates. Still-high inflation is continuing to eat into some budgets, pandemic savings are drying up, borrowers continue to pile on more debt and the highest interest rates in nearly a quarter century are squeezing Americans.

Investors made clear on Tuesday the depth of their concerns over President Emmanuel Macron’s gamble to call for new elections in France, driving up the nation’s borrowing costs, pushing down stock prices and prompting the Moody’s ratings agency to warn it may downgrade French sovereign debt as risks of political instability rise. Mr. Macron’s dissolution of the lower house of Parliament on Sunday after his party was battered by Marine Le Pen’s far-right party in European Parliament elections has ignited concerns that the government could grind to a stalemate. The turmoil has focused attention on France’s fragile finances, and the prospect of legislative gridlock that could undermine the government’s ability to address it. “This decision will not ease the economic challenges facing the country,” Philippe Ledent, senior economist at ING Bank, wrote in a note to clients. Public finances and the performance of the French economy will be “at the heart of the electoral campaign,” he added.

Some analysts are eyeing zero rate cuts from the Fed this year. AdvertisementAfter the latest jobs report all but dismissed an interest rate cut in July, some analysts are taking it a step further, and expect no rate cuts at all this calendar year. That's more pessimistic than what investors continue to bet on, with fed fund futures indicating at least one 25-basis point rate cut to occur in 2024. According to market veteran Ed Yardeni, the Federal Reserve should "take a vacation," and leave interest rates unchanged through 2024, he told CNBC-TV18. AdvertisementMeanwhile, Catalyst Capital's David Miller agreed that the Fed shouldn't cut interest rates in 2024, citing that this would allow inflation to run hotter.

watch nowWhat an investor home purchase meansIn this context, investors are defined as any institution or business that purchases residential real estate, according to Redfin. Investor share refers to the portion of homes purchased by investors over a certain period, said Chen Zhao, senior economist at Redfin. Part of the recent increase in real estate investor activity is due to seasonality, as more homes are typically sold during the spring, Walsh said. Sales began to decline as mortgage rates climbed, as higher interest rates affect both typical homebuyers and investors, he said. What investor interest means for buyers and rentersIf you're a consumer buying on the market, you are competing against investors on top of other typical homebuyers, Zhao explained.

The median CEO in the S&P 500 was paid 196 times as much as the median employee in 2023, according to an analysis by Equilar and The Associated Press. The widening divide is driven by the fact that CEO pay — which is closely tied to share prices — is rising notably faster than that of employees. Median total compensation for S&P 500 CEOs (including stock awards) soared to $16.3 million in 2023 — a huge year-over-year increase of 12.6%, compared to just 0.9% in 2022. The median S&P 500 employee earned $81,467 last year, up 5.2% from 2022, the report said. Given the rising stock market, the median stock award increased by 10.7% to $9.4 million, the report found.

Inflation in the euro zone rose to 2.6% in May, statistics agency Eurostat said Friday, but a higher-than-expected print did not sway market bets of an interest rate cut from the European Central Bank next week. Core inflation, excluding the volatile effects of energy, food, alcohol and tobacco, increased to 2.9% from 2.7% in April. The data comes with the ECB widely expected to cut interest rates at its June 6 meeting, the first reduction since 2019. While headline inflation increased in May, fluctuations in the rate have been forecast over the coming months due to base effects from the energy market and the unwinding of government fiscal support schemes across the bloc, . Staff are also due to release their latest round of inflation and growth projections at next week's meeting, providing more clues on the pace and level of potential cuts this year.

Caledonia Investments could see its stock price soar by more than 35% if restrictions on share buybacks are lifted, according to fund manager Brian McCormick. McCormick, who runs the Jupiter Global Value fund at Jupiter Asset Management, said Caledonia's share buybacks are limited due to restrictions in share ownership as set out in the U.K.'s Takeover Code. In addition, when the fund performs a share buyback while its stock trades below its NAV, it is buying its own assets at a 37% discount. Caledonia's buyback limits When a company buys back shares, those shares are canceled, which can increase the percentage ownership of remaining shareholders. Analysts also agree that Caledonia's limits on share buybacks right now are holding back the share price.

Warren Buffett's best return — on a percentage basis — was scored when he was starting out with little money seven decades ago. The Oracle of Omaha once vowed that he could easily produce a 50% annual return if he was only managing $1 million. "If I was running $1 million today, or $10 million for that matter, I'd be fully invested. At an early age, Buffett developed an extraordinary knack for picking cheap stocks, oftentimes troubled companies at deep discounts. You can't just be in love with the money, you've really got to just find it," he said.
