A 31-year-old abuse allegation against U.S. men’s national team coach Gregg Berhalter was made by Danielle Reyna, the mother of U.S. men’s soccer star Gio Reyna, after she and Gio’s father, Claudio, took issue with Berhalter’s public description of benching their son during the Qatar World Cup. Claudio and Danielle Reyna confirmed in separate statements on Wednesday that they had brought the allegation to the attention of U.S. Soccer, the sport’s national governing body. The allegations represent a confrontation between two families that had been friends for decades, dating back to the days when three of them were students at the University of North Carolina. News of the Reynas’ involvement was first reported by ESPN.

The Atlas Lions made history as the first African team to reach a World Cup semifinal. They made history as the first all-female refereeing crew for a men's World Cup match. It was Morocco's first World Cup win since 1998 — and its third-ever at the tournament. Less spoken about is that they also rate better on television than the men do in the World Cup. We’ll just have to wait and see, though with the US, Canada and Mexico hosting the 2026 World Cup, soccer isn’t going away anytime soon.
AL RAYYAN, Qatar—An hour after the U.S. men’s national team had been eliminated from the World Cup, a handful of players were still strolling around the field at Khalifa International Stadium. They walked around, barefoot on the grass, soaking in their final moments on soccer’s biggest stage before they began the four-year wait for another shot. U.S. captain Tyler Adams lingered for as long as he could before the grounds crew ushered him off. The Americans had lost 3-1 to a technically superior Netherlands side, but Adams was convinced that his team shouldn’t have been the one going home.

With that goal, Dumfries became the first Dutch player to be directly involved in more than three goals in a single World Cup match since 1978, according to the statistics website OptaJoe. USMNT star Christian Pulisic said he was “really proud” of the team’s performances at the World Cup.

Although African nations have lost eight of their nine World Cup knockout round games against European sides, the lone exception was one which featured Senegal’s current manager, Aliou Cisse. “They’ve had to defend a lot in the group stage and they defended very well.
CNN —Lionel Messi scored in what was the 1,000th game of his storied career as Argentina beat Australia 2-1 to advance to the World Cup quarterfinals. In the second half, Julián Álvarez capitalized on some slack goalkeeping by Australia stopper Mat Ryan to score his second goal of the tournament and extend Argentina’s lead. Those fans were soon crooning even more loudly when Messi curled a beautiful, left-footed effort past Australian keeper Ryan following a slick Argentina moved. After the break, Argentina began to turn on the style, though La Albiceleste’s second goal stemmed from hard work and pressing. With Australia pushing for a second goal, Argentina had an opportunities to catch the Socceroos on the break, with Lautaro Martínez missing numerous opportunities to seal the game.

DOHA, Qatar—The most consequential U.S. men’s national team game in two decades is one coach Gregg Berhalter has been preparing for his entire career. He had no idea when he moved to Holland as a 21-year-old that he would one day face the Netherlands for a spot in the World Cup quarterfinals. But on Saturday, in a win-or-go-home match at Khalifa International Stadium, the soccer philosophy he most admires will be turned against him. It represents the biggest test so far of Berhalter’s skills as an in-game manager, pitting him against one of the great tacticians of the modern game, a wily 71-year-old named Louis van Gaal.
CNN —US Men’s National Team head coach Gregg Berhalter had good news for fans on Friday, saying that star player Christian Pulisic is looking likely to play in the team’s round of 16 World Cup clash against the Netherlands on Saturday. The USMNT is looking to progress to the quarterfinals for the first time since 2002, but Berhalter said the team were not looking that far ahead. “It’s literally one game at a time, one minute at a time,” he told reporters. “You also have to realize that it could be a 120-minute exercise and you have to plan your lineups and substitutions accordingly.”More to follow.

In the summer of his junior year of college in 1994, Gregg Berhalter decided it was time to look further afield to continue his studies. He was going to abandon his bachelor’s degree at North Carolina and go chase an education in soccer. The future U.S. men’s national team coach didn’t choose England for his study abroad, the nation that invented the game, or Italy, which had the strongest professional league. Instead, Berhalter settled on a small country full of towns he couldn’t pronounce and fans who all believed they had Ph.D.s in the game.
AL RAYYAN, Qatar— U.S. men’s national team star Christian Pulisic said he would do “everything within my power” to play in the Americans’ Round of 16 match against the Netherlands on Saturday, but stopped short of guaranteeing he will appear after suffering an injury in the group stage finale against Iran. The U.S. win over Iran that sent the team to the knockout stage came at a high price when Pulisic was hurt as he scored the only goal in the 1-0 win. After briefly returning to the pitch, he left the game at halftime and was taken to the hospital for tests, where he followed the end of the game on a cellphone. Pulisic is officially labeled as “day to day” with a pelvic contusion.

DOHA, Qatar—As the U.S. men’s national team qualified for the knockout rounds of the World Cup on Tuesday night, no one had more touches of the ball than midfielder Tyler Adams. They weren’t the most memorable—he finished the 1-0 victory over Iran with no goals or assists. They weren’t even the most dangerous—the bulk of them occurred more than 40 yards from Iran’s goal. But they were among the most meaningful of the night. That’s because everything this American team does in Qatar, sooner or later, runs through the heart of its midfield, Tyler Adams.
CNN —US Men’s National Team (USMNT) captain Christian Pulisic shone some light on his mystery injury on Thursday and allayed fears surrounding his fitness heading into Saturday’s huge round of 16 clash against the Netherlands. “I didn’t get, like, hit in the balls,” he added. “I’m alright. It was very painful and that bone is there for a reason to protect you, I think, and I hit it well. It would be a huge blow to the USMNT’s chances if the 24-year-old is forced to miss the match against the Netherlands.

DOHA, Qatar—In order to advance to the knockout stage of this World Cup, the U.S. men’s national team knew it needed a way to unlock Iran’s notoriously stingy defense. What the Americans came up with was a play that produced one of the most memorable goals in U.S. soccer history. When Christian Pulisic connected with a headed pass to give the U.S. a 1-0 lead—and ultimately win a spot in the Round of 16 and a Saturday date with Netherlands—members of the team insisted that the key sequence wasn’t merely a handful of improvised passes finished off by one clever run. They said it was a designed progression that the team had practiced meticulously just in case the opportunity arose.
CNN —After a 1-0 victory against Iran earned the US Men’s National Team (USMNT) a place in the World Cup knockout stages, the players insist their campaign is far from done. “I think the narrative continues, we’re still going to try and do that and accomplish our goal of winning the World Cup. Josh Sargent and Ramin Rezaeian embrace after Tuesday's game. CNN —The United States Women’s National Team (USWNT) earned more money from its male equivalent reaching the knockout stages of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar than it did from winning its own tournaments in 2015 and 2019. As a result of the equal pay agreement forged earlier this year between the United States Soccer Federation (USSF), the United States Women’s National Team Players Association (USWNTPA) and the United States National Soccer Team Players Association (USNSTPA), the men and women’s teams split all World Cup earnings. Under the landmark agreement, US Soccer became “the first Federation in the world to equalize FIFA World Cup prize money” awarded to the teams for participating in World Cups. The USWNT earned $6 million in total for its successive World Cup wins in 2015 and 2019 – $2 million in 2015 and $4 million in 2019. The 2019 Women’s World Cup total prize money was $30 million, doubled from the $15 million in 2015.
CNN —The US Men’s National Team (USMNT) was made to work hard for its place in the World Cup knockout stage, earning a tough 1-0 win over Iran in a nerve-racking Group B decider at Qatar 2022. Christian Pulisic’s first-half goal was all that separated the two sides as the USMNT reached the round of 16 for the first time since 2014. It certainly wasn’t pretty at times, in particular in the closing stages against Iran, but progressing through the group stage was the minimum expectation for this exciting young team. There will be some concerns going into the knockout stages, though, after Pulisic suffered an abdominal injury while scoring the winner. The USMNT had to battled hard for its place in the round of 16.
CNN —US Men’s National Team (USMNT) forward Christian Pulisic has been taken to hospital due to an abdominal injury he suffered while scoring the game-winning goal for the United States in its crucial 1-0 win over Iran. During post-match coverage, FOX Sports broadcaster Rob Stone provided an update on the condition of Pulisic, saying: “An update on his condition. Pulisic lay injured on the pitch after scoring his side's opening goal and only goal during the match against Iran. Pulisic soon re-entered the pitch, but was clearly still struggling with the knock. As Group B runners-up, the United States will face Group A winners Netherlands on Saturday.

DOHA, Qatar—Before Matt Turner became a star for the U.S. men’s national team, he was famous for the one and only thing that a goalkeeper never wants to become associated with: an all-time howler. The goal Turner gave up in 2013 was so astonishing that a Fairfield University soccer clip went viral. Videos of the play—which began with a shot that ricocheted off the crossbar, popped into the air and then rolled off Turner when he tried to collect it, into his own net—rapidly spread across social media and the nightly news. Turner rode the bench for the rest of the season while seemingly everyone watched his mistake over and over.
CNN —The World Cup match between Portugal and Uruguay was briefly interrupted by a pitch invader waving a rainbow flag on the field at the Lusail Iconic Stadium on Monday. Molly Darlington/ReutersThe participation of Iran, who play the US Men’s National Team on Tuesday in a Group B match, in the World Cup has been played out against the backdrop of the country’s domestic turmoil. Meanwhile the issue of LGBTQ+ rights in Qatar has also been a constant theme at the World Cup. The victory means that Portugal has advanced to the next stage of the World Cup with a game to spare whereas Uruguay needs a victory from its final game against Ghana to have any hopes of progressing.
