Navigating the time zone to buy tickets was the hardest part, as we hadn't yet moved to France from the United States. The cost was reasonable, too, with tickets to many events starting at about 25 euros ($27). Once the Games began and we attended our first few events, I realized it would've been quite easy to wait until the Olympics started to nab tickets instead. One day, I had the option to purchase quarter-final handball tickets for 24 euros or tickets to the men's boxing semi-finals for 305 euros. I didn't buy them, but I was surprised to find that the Olympics could be a show-up-and-go event if you're flexible enough.

When Sam Watson set a speed climbing world record of 4.75 seconds in the Parisian suburbs, where a temporary climbing wall has been installed for the Olympics, he became the owner of a unique sporting accolade. “That’s a cool title, no one can take that away I suppose.”For those spectating at a speed climbing event, a moment’s distraction can prove costly. Watson set the previous speed climbing world record of 4.79 seconds at a World Cup event in China earlier this year, before Indonesia’s Veddriq Leonardo matched that time in Tuesday’s heats. “But I did go a lot faster in practice and I did have the idea that it was possible [to get a world record]. Speed climbing is considered a different skill to lead and bouldering, and mastering all three is a near-impossible task.

He was courageous enough to try to do one of the hardest things in running, win a race from the front, wire-to-wire. 😱 A STUNNING upset in the men’s 1500m as AMERICAN COLE HOCKER takes gold! This was the race that all running nerds had circled on their Olympic schedules, but not because of Hocker. Oldest brother Henrik finished fifth in the 1,500 meters at the 2012 Olympics. It all happened Monday when Brazilian gymnastics gold medalist Rebeca Andrade approached the podium for the medal ceremony following a women’s floor final full of twists and turns. Showing no hard feelings, American duo Simone Biles and Jordan Chiles turned to Andrade from the lower section of the podium and bowed to the Brazilian, who raised her arms in triumph. The golden moment, which also marked the first all-Black Olympics gymnastics podium, touched hearts on social media. Simone Biles competes during the artistic gymnastics women's balance beam final on August 5, 2024 in Paris. “So yeah, in that moment, I was like … first off, again, yes, it was an all-Black podium.

CNN —Simone Biles put on a show at the Paris Olympics and walked away with another three gold medals and a silver to add to her extraordinary collection. Biles told CNN Sport’s Coy Wire that her return to the Olympics was for no one else, and that past experience made her participation and performances in Paris all the sweeter. So doing this for just me meant the world.”Despite overcoming them, she admits that doubts sometimes still begin to creep in. It didn’t slow her down much as she won gold with Team USA in the team competition and then took the individual all-around and vault gold medals. It might seem more like an artform than a sport, but breakdancing — known professionally as breaking — is making its Olympics debut this month in Paris. The Olympics adopted the same name to honor its culture and history and preserve its authenticity, Nifontov said. As breaking makes its Olympics debut, Cooper said a part of him fears it will lose some of the cultural qualities that make it a unique artform. Breaking events are scored on five factorsLike gymnastics or figure skating, breaking competitions are scored by a panel of judges. American sprinter Gabby Thomas won her first Olympic gold medal in the 2024 Paris Games women's 200-meter final on Tuesday — an accomplishment that she credits, in part, to her second job. The 27-year-old, who took home bronze and silver during her Olympic debut at the Tokyo games, balances her career as an Olympian with a job in health care. Thomas holds a bachelor's degree in neurobiology from Harvard University and a master's degree in public health from the University of Texas Health Science Center. In the months leading up to the Games, Thomas trained three to six hours a day, but at night, she worked at an Austin volunteer health-care clinic for people without insurance. "I think I'm just so grateful to get to do what I love," Thomas told Olympics.com.

Viewers have had mixed reactions to athletes who have gotten engaged during the Paris Games. While some feel that the grand gesture makes Olympians’ big moments even bigger, others say that the proposals steal the spotlight from female athletes in particular. A Chinese social media site even jokingly shared a post featuring an added engagement ring column alongside the medal counter. But proposals done just after a monumental win have drawn some of the most scrutiny from some fans. And many social media users came to the couple’s defense, arguing that the proposal took place after the medal ceremony.

Jordan Chiles won her first individual Olympic medal in Monday's floor exercise final, but originally, the judges left her off the podium. After losing an all-around bronze medal in a heart-wrenching tiebreaker, Raisman thought she was fourth again on the beam. Raisman was on the 2016 Olympic team with Biles that won team gold and collected more medals than any U.S. gymnastics team in history. Chiles lost the chance to contend for an all-around medal to her teammate Suni Lee, who went on to win bronze. For some, the pressure and expectations might forge diamonds – and Paris 2024 has no shortage of this type of athlete. Lithuanian discus thrower Mykolas Alekna is poised to carry on the legacy of his father, Virgilijus, who holds an Olympic record in the same discipline. His 69.89-meter throw in Athens 2004 guaranteed the then-32-year-old a second Olympic gold medal, having also won in Sydney 2000. It was a record the elder Alekna was chasing his entire career and got close only once: a personal record of 73.88 meters thrown just before the Sydney Games. “If you don’t change anything, you’ll be just like your father: without the world record,” Virgilijus said to Lithuanian news outlet Lrytas when asked what he said to his son a month prior to his record-breaking effort.
