WASHINGTON, Nov 30 (Reuters) - A U.S. House of Representatives committee has obtained Donald Trump's tax returns, following a years-long court fight with the Republican former president who has accused the Democratic-led panel of being politically motivated. The Ways and Means Committee obtained the tax returns following a Supreme Court decision clearing their release. The panel will have little time to do its work, with Republicans poised to take the House majority in January. It had long been customary, though not required, for major party presidential candidates to release their returns. The committee first requested Trump's returns in 2019.
The House Ways and Committee obtained Donald Trump's federal tax returns after a yearslong legal battle. The move came just a week after the Supreme Court rejected Trump's request to block the panel from receiving the records. The move comes just over a week after the Supreme Court dismissed Trump's emergency request to block House Democrats from receiving the former president's closely guarded financial records. "Treasury has complied with last week's court decision," a spokesperson for the Treasury Department told NBC News.
WASHINGTON, Nov 30 (Reuters) - A U.S. House of Representatives committee has obtained access to Donald Trump's tax returns, following a years-long court fight with the Republican former president who has accused the Democratic-led panel of being politically motivated.
The Ways and Means Committee has said it wanted copies of Trump's returns, and the tax returns of several Trump legal entities, for an inquiry into how the IRS audits presidential tax returns. The committee had been seeking Trump's tax returns since 2019, when the Republican was still president. Trump as a presidential candidate and then as president broke decades of tradition by refusing to publicly release his tax returns. When the committee first asked for Trump's returns three years ago, the Treasury Department refused to turn them over. "The Supreme Court has lost its honor, prestige, and standing, & has become nothing more than a political body, with our Country paying the price."
Letitia James, the New York attorney general, also has years of tax returns, and has brought a civil case based largely on them. First, the updated House request to the Treasury Department in 2021 calls for more recent tax returns, this time for tax years 2015-2020. Tax returns in the hands of a congressional committee are not the same as tax returns in the hands of a prosecutor. Government prosecutors can obtain, but not disclose, the contents of tax returns — unless, that is, it becomes necessary to introduce relevant portions of the returns into evidence. After evidence came to light that President Richard Nixon had used taxpayer information to target political opponents, legislation was enacted in 1976 that severely restricted a president’s ability to disclose taxpayer information.
"Why would anybody be surprised that the Supreme Court has ruled against me, they always do! "The Supreme Court has lost its honor, prestige, and standing, & has become nothing more than a political body, with our Country paying the price." In follow-up posts, Trump rehashed complaints over the court's handling of the 2020 election and referenced reports of leaked opinions. On Tuesday, the Supreme Court dismissed Trump's bid to block his tax returns from being released to Congress. In his one term as president, Trump appointed three justices — Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh, and Amy Coney Barrett — cementing the court's 6-3 conservative majority likely for years to come.
"There is a way that we can forward those tax returns to the House, and the House can act on this. A Ways and Means Committee spokesperson did not respond to a request for comment on the panel's plans. Those two committees are among three in Congress whose chairs can receive individual tax returns upon request under federal law. "The Supreme Court has no idea what their inaction unleashes," Representative Kevin Brady, the top Ways and Means Republican, said in a statement. Committee members will consider what information related to Trump's tax returns can be made public when Congress returns to work next week.
Prosecutors have accused the Trump Organization of paying executives through off-the-books perks including bonuses as if they were freelancers. WHY DOES CONGRESS WANT TRUMP'S TAX RETURNS? DO OTHER OFFICIALS HAVE TRUMP'S TAX RETURNS? The Manhattan district attorney in February 2021 said it obtained eight years of Trump's tax returns in the investigation that led to the Trump Organization's tax fraud trial. The Supreme Court's decision on Tuesday to allow the panel to obtain the tax returns came a week after Trump announced his latest presidential run.
Former President Donald Trump stands on the 18th green during the Pro-Am tournament before the LIV Golf series at Trump National Doral, Oct. 27, 2022. "Why would anybody be surprised that the Supreme Court has ruled against me, they always do!" Trump wrote in a post on his Truth Social account. "The Supreme Court has lost its honor, prestige, and standing, & has become nothing more than a political body, with our Country paying the price." Trump also noted that the Supreme Court previously had refused to take cases that sought to reverse his 2020 presidential election loss to President Joe Biden.
WASHINGTON–The Supreme Court on Tuesday said it wouldn’t block a House committee from accessing Donald Trump’s tax returns, handing a defeat to the former president in a long-running court fight. The court denied Mr. Trump’s request for a temporary order, known as a stay, that would have blocked the House Ways and Means Committee from obtaining the tax returns from the Internal Revenue Service. The unsigned order from the court had no dissents.
WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court on Tuesday rejected former President Donald Trump's last-ditch plea to block the release of his tax records to House Democrats, paving the way for their possible disclosure to the lawmakers. Earlier this month, Chief Justice John Roberts temporarily blocked the Ways and Means panel from accessing Trump’s tax records while the court decided how to act on Trump’s request. House Democrats, as well as the Biden administration, urged the court to reject Trump's request, saying their demand for the tax documents reflected a valid legislative purpose. Democrats have been calling for Trump to release his tax returns ever since the 2016 presidential campaign. While no law requires presidential candidates to release their tax returns, it has become the norm for both Democrats and Republicans to do so.
WASHINGTON—The Supreme Court on Tuesday said it wouldn’t block a House committee from accessing Donald Trump’s tax returns, handing an apparently final defeat to the former president in a long-running court fight. The court denied Mr. Trump’s request for a temporary order, known as a stay, that would have blocked the House Ways and Means Committee from obtaining the tax returns from the Internal Revenue Service. The unsigned order from the court had no dissents and, as is typical in emergency matters, provided no explanation of the court’s reasoning.

REUTERS/Jonathan Ernst/File PhotoNov 22 (Reuters) - The U.S. Supreme Court on Tuesday cleared the release of Donald Trump's tax returns to a congressional committee, handing a defeat to the Republican former president who had called the Democratic-led panel's request politically motivated. The panel in its request invoked a federal law that empowers its chairman to request any person's tax returns from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). House Democrats have said they need to see Trump's tax returns to assess whether the IRS is properly auditing presidential returns and to gauge whether new legislation is needed. Trump's lawyers have said the committee's real aim is to publicly expose his tax returns and unearth politically damaging information about Trump. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit in August also ruled against Trump and in October refused a rehearing.
The Supreme Court on Tuesday dismissed former President Donald Trump's bid to block the release of his personal tax returns to Congress, clearing the way for Democrats to review his records in their final weeks in the majority. Supreme Court clears way to Congress for Trump tax returnsThe conservative-leaning U.S. Supreme Court cleared the release of Trump's tax returns to the House of Representatives Ways and Means Committee. The committee in its request invoked a federal law that empowers its chairman to request any person's tax returns from the tax-collecting Internal Revenue Service (IRS). Trump's lawyers have said the committee's real aim is to publicly expose his tax returns and unearth politically damaging information about Trump. The complaint seeks $250 million in damages, to stop the Trumps from running businesses in the state and to ban Trump and his company from acquiring New York real estate for five years. Trump lawyer James Trusty told the judges that Trump's status as a former president made this an unusual case that required a special master's review.
The Supreme Court on Tuesday rejected a bid by former President Donald Trump to prevent Congress from obtaining his federal income tax returns and those of related business entities from the IRS. The decision sets the stage for the Democrat-controlled House Ways and Means Committee to obtain Trump's tax returns in the weeks before Republicans take majority control of the House. The entire appeals court on Oct. 27 denied Trump's request to have the full lineup of the judges on that court rehear his appeal. Trump then asked the Supreme Court on Oct. 31 to block the committee from obtaining his tax returns. The brief response Tuesday from the Supreme Court rejected Trump's request to stay the lower court rulings that had cleared the way for the committee to get his returns.
While Republicans sought to seize on that economic anxiety during the campaign, most candidates provided few specifics. “The GOP still doesn’t know what its economic policy is in a post-Trump world,” said Brian Riedl, who worked for six years as chief economist for Republican Sen. Biden said he has no plans to change his approach to the economy, despite voters’ sentiments, making a shift toward a compromise with Republicans on economic policy seemingly unlikely. “That means there will be a lot less economic policy. “Republicans are going to need to deliver on the economy, especially if the economy is worsening and inflation is worsening,” said Riedl.
WASHINGTON — House Republicans' majority will be smaller than expected, but they're eager to use their new oversight powers and pass a spate of bills to draw contrasts with Democrats and give the Biden administration heartburn. House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., joined by Rep. Jim Banks, R-Ind., left, and Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, in Washington on July 21, 2021. A growing number of Republicans say they have their sights set on impeaching Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, bashing his handling of the border surge. LegislationDemocrats still occupy the White House, so any legislation Republicans pass on a partisan basis won’t be signed into law by Biden. But House Republicans say they will waste no time showing the parties’ stark differences as they battle for control of the White House in 2024.
Protestors take part in the 'Tax March' calling on President Donald Trump to release his tax records on April 15, 2017 in New York. The fight began in 2019, when the Democratic-controlled Ways and Means committee asked the IRS for Trump's returns. When Biden took office and the Treasury Department moved to hand over the returns, Trump countersued to stop the release. If the hold is lifted, Treasury would deliver the returns to the Ways and Means Committee, likely within days. Missouri GOP Rep. Jason Smith, who is not related to Nebraska's Adrian Smith, said he too would halt the years long effort to get Trump's tax returns.
CNN —All eyes are on former President Donald Trump, whose third White House bid has already become mired in controversy. The Justice Department investigation continues into whether documents from the Trump White House were illegally mishandled when they were brought to Mar-a-Lago in Florida after he left office. Any unauthorized retention or destruction of White House documents could violate a criminal law that prohibits the removal or destruction of official government records, legal experts told CNN. During the panel’s hearings this summer, fingers were pointed at GOP lawmakers and Trump allies who tried to help overturn the election and Trump White House officials who failed to stop the former president’s actions. Recently, DOJ moved to compel additional testimony from former White House counsel Pat Cipollone and deputy White House counsel Patrick Philbin.
Chief Justice John Roberts effectively paused the dispute on Nov. 1, preventing the committee from obtaining Trump's returns while the court considered the matter. House Democrats have said they need to see Trump's tax returns to assess whether the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) is properly auditing presidential returns and to gauge whether new legislation is needed. The committee in its request invoked a federal law that empowers its chairman to seek any person's tax returns from the IRS. U.S. District Judge Trevor McFadden, a Trump appointee, sided with Congress in December 2021 and threw out the challenge, finding that the committee holds broad authority over a former president's tax returns. "A long line of Supreme Court cases requires great deference to facially valid congressional inquiries.
WASHINGTON — The Department of Justice and the House Ways and Means Committee asked the Supreme Court on Thursday to reject former President Donald Trump's request to block the panel from accessing his tax records. Earlier this month, Chief Justice John Roberts Chief temporarily blocked the Ways and Means panel from accessing Trump's tax records. Roberts said the case would remain on hold until the court acts and asked the committee to file a response to Trump’s request by Thursday. After the DOJ's filing, the committee also filed a similar 52-page argument Thursday against Trump's request. “The committee’s purpose in requesting President Trump’s tax returns has nothing to do with funding or staffing issues at the IRS and everything to do with releasing the president’s tax information to the public,” the lawyers wrote in a recent court filing.

House Democrats have said they need to see Trump's tax returns to assess whether the Internal Revenue Service is properly auditing presidential returns and to gauge whether new legislation is needed. The IRS and the Treasury Department on Thursday urged the Supreme Court against blocking a lower court ruling requiring the agencies to turn over years of former President Donald Trump's federal tax returns to Congress. The filings came nine days after Chief Justice John Roberts issued a temporary block on the committee getting the tax returns of Trump and related business entities from the IRS. Roberts' action came after Trump sought the delay pending the high court ruling on whether he would be allowed to appeal a lower court order allowing the committee to get the tax records. Presidential tax returns are automatically audited each year by law. If the Supreme Court does not maintain the block, the committee could get the returns soon.
