Mark Meadows, White House chief of staff, listens to a question from a member of the media outside of the White House in Washington, D.C., U.S., on Wednesday, Oct. 21, 2020. A federal judge denied former White House chief of staff Mark Meadows' request for an emergency stay of a ruling that sent his Georgia election interference case back to state court, a court filing showed Wednesday. Meadows, former President Donald Trump's final chief of staff, had asked U.S. District Judge Steve Jones to pause his ruling pending an appeal in a higher court. Jones on Friday had denied Meadows' initial bid to move the sweeping Georgia RICO case out of Fulton County and into federal court. Meadows, argued Willis, is seeking a benefit that is aimed at protecting federal authority against interference by the state.

Mark Meadows has failed to show he can "carry the heavy burden" required to pause a judge's order rejecting his bid to move his Georgia criminal election interference case to federal court, Atlanta's district attorney argued Tuesday. On Monday, Meadows' attorneys asked Jones to stay his own ruling pending an appeal in a federal appellate court. They argued that without a stay, Meadows could be "irreparably injured" as his prosecution barrels ahead in Fulton County Superior Court. The prosecutor, on Tuesday, urged Jones to deny the motion for a stay, arguing that Meadows has not shown he is likely to prevail in an appeal. Meadows' arguments attempt to "talk around" the federal judge's reasoning and fail to cite "any pertinent public interest weighing in his favor," the DA wrote.

Two of the people charged have filed speedy trial demands, and Judge Scott McAfee set their trial for Oct. 23. That could lead to multiple trials in the high-profile case happening simultaneously, creating security issues and “unavoidable burdens” on witnesses and victims, prosecutors argued. Five of the defendants are seeking to move their cases to federal court, and lawyers for Trump have said he may do the same. But prosecutors noted that the law explicitly allows a case to continue to move forward in a state court while the question of moving a case to federal court is pending. Federal Judge Steve Jones last week rejected the attempt by Trump White House chief of staff Mark Meadows to move his case to federal court and sent it back to state court, but Meadows is appealing that ruling.

REUTERS/Al Drago/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsSept 11 (Reuters) - Mark Meadows, a former aide to Donald Trump who was charged in Georgia with trying to overturn the former U.S. president's 2020 election loss, has appealed a judge's ruling denying his bid to move the case to federal court, a court filing showed on Monday. He also asked the U.S. district court for northern Georgia to stay the effect of its order remanding his case to state court pending his appeal to the 11th Circuit. In that filing, Meadows' lawyers argued that several aspects of the district court's order departed from precedent, including failing to credit Meadows' account of his conduct and duties and raising the burden on Meadows to justify the removal of his case from state court. "There is a substantial possibility that the Eleventh Circuit will disagree with this Court on at least one of these issues, or on other issues Mr. Meadows will raise on appeal," the court filing said. Meadows also argued that not granting a stay would cause irreparable injury to Meadows.

The world number one is set to travel to Valencia and join the Serbia team for their Davis Cup Finals group stage ties with South Korea, Spain and Czech Republic, although he is likely to feature only in the final two clashes. "We can't wait to have him for Friday," Kecmanovic told a news conference before their Group C opener against South Korea on Tuesday. "It definitely takes a little bit of the pressure off since he always carried the team so well. Defending champions Canada clinched their first title in the men's premier team event beating Australia in last year's final. They are joined by the 12 winners of the 2023 qualifiers - Chile, Croatia, Czech Republic, Finland, France, Britain, South Korea, Netherlands, Serbia, Sweden, Switzerland and the United States - apart from wild cards Italy and Spain.

It doesn't look like that's close to happening," Murray told the BBC on Monday. He's played at this level for such a long time now," said Britain's Murray, who won three Grand Slams. In July, 20-year-old Carlos Alcaraz ended Djokovic's Wimbledon reign after the Serbian had won four titles in a row at the All England Club. "Physically, motivation, whether someone like Alcaraz improves - he's an amazing player Alcaraz, he's brilliant, but to do what Novak is doing on a consistent basis is different."

Novak Djokovic takes the U.S. Open title at age 36

(Photo by Clive Brunskill/Getty Images)Novak Djokovic won the U.S. Open men's final Sunday, cementing his place as one of the sport's greatest players and fortifying his status as the athlete with its most men's Grand Slam titles. At 36, Djokovic is retirement age in professional tennis. The win may have been redemption for the champion, who lost to Medvedev in the 2021 U.S. Open final. That Russian thwarted Djokovic's attempt to take all four major championships in a calendar year, a rare feat last accomplished in men's open competition by Rod Laver in 1969. That French Open title was the 23rd major singles title for Djokovic, breaking a tie with long-time rival Rafael Nadal, winner of 22 Grand Slam titles.

His 6-3 7-6(5) 6-3 victory over Russian Daniil Medvedev brought him not only a fourth Flushing Meadows title but a record-equalling 24th Grand Slam crown, and Djokovic wants more. "Occasionally asking myself, why do I need this still at this stage after all I have done, you know? I do have these questions in my head, of course," said Djokovic. AGONY AND ECSTASYSunday's win will also go a long way to banishing some of Djokovic's less fond memories of New York. As he basked in the glory of his win, Djokovic had no words of comfort for those hoping to replace him.

Opinion: Why Lindsey Graham wasn’t indicted

(It shouldn’t be confused with the regular grand jury, whose duty it was to decide whether to indict those under criminal investigation.) The special grand jury completed its duties in December. Using the extra layer of a special grand jury is often reserved for complex corruption cases. There are multiple explanations for why some people may not have been indicted despite the special grand jury’s recommendations. Willis may simply have not presented to the regular grand jury some individuals she considered less than provably guilty.

After a lopsided first set where everything was working in Djokovic's favour, Medvedev had an excellent chance to level the match in the second set but squandered a break point at 6-5. "Second set was the best set I played and I didn't win it. "Sometimes in a Grand Slam you're not going to feel 100% and you may still win the whole thing," said Medvedev, who picked up two Masters 1000 titles in 2023. Former Rep. Mark Meadows, R-N.C., speaks during a forum on House and GOP Conference rules for the 118th Congress, at the FreedomWorks office in Washington, D.C., on Monday, November 14, 2022. Mark Meadows, Donald Trump's former White House chief of staff, on Monday sought to pause an order rejecting his bid to move his Georgia criminal election interference case to federal court. In a court filing Monday morning, Meadows asked a federal judge — who last week declined to move the case out of state court — to stay that order pending an appeal. Meadows' attorney said that "given the urgency of the matter," he will ask the 11th Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals to pause the order unless the federal court grants his request for a stay. "While Mr. Meadows respectfully believes the Court erred, this Court need not agree to stay the Remand Order," his attorney wrote in the filing in U.S. District Court in Atlanta.

Dabrowski and Routliffe win U.S. Open women's doubles title

Dabrowski and Routliffe, who began their partnership just last month, saved eight of the nine break points they faced during a match that lasted two hours, 14 minutes. It marked the first Grand Slam title for Routliffe, who previously represented Canada, and third for Dabrowski following the mixed doubles titles she won at the 2017 French Open and 2018 Australian Open. She really took a chance on me and I really appreciate it and love her for it," Routliffe said during their on-court interview. Siegemund and Zvonareva, who won the 2020 U.S. Open women's doubles competition, failed to convert any of the five break point opportunities they had in a tightly-contested first set that required a drama-filled tiebreaker. Sabalenka will overtake Poland's Iga Swiatek when the new rankings are updated on Monday and the Belarusian admitted her new status will help ease the sting of her U.S. Open final loss to American teenager Coco Gauff. "Yeah, that's why probably, that's why I'm not super depressed right now," Sabalenka said when asked to reflect on becoming world number one for the first time. "I'm definitely going for a drink tonight if I'm allowed to say that," a smiling Sabalenka added. I got overemotional after the second set." Despite falling to Gauff in the final, Sabalenka can hold her head high after delivering a remarkable Grand Slam season that included an Australian Open title in January before semi-final appearances at the French Open and Wimbledon.

The victory, his fourth in 10 Flushing Meadows finals, capped another remarkable Grand Slam campaign for Djokovic with wins at the Australian, French and U.S. The 36-year-old Serb becomes the oldest U.S. Open men’s winner in the Open Era and the first to win three Grand Slam events in a season for the fourth time. The last time the two clashed at the U.S. Open was in the 2021 final, when the Russian captured his only major and denied the Serb a rare calendar Grand Slam. While Djokovic and Medvedev are intriguing figures, neither has been fully embraced by the New York crowds. That would be the only break Djokovic would need against a surprisingly flat Medvedev who could not manufacture a single break chance in the first set.

The last time Djokovic and Medvedev clashed at the U.S. Open was in the 2021 final, when the Russian captured his only major so far and denied the Serb a rare calendar Grand Slam. Second seed Djokovic, 36, fought back from two sets down to beat fellow Serb Laslo Djere in the third round but did not drop another set on the way to his 10th U.S. Open final. "He (Djokovic) is always better than the previous time he plays," said 27-year-old Medvedev, who will be appearing in his third U.S. Open final, having also lost to Rafa Nadal in 2019. While Djokovic and Medvedev are compelling figures, neither has been fully embraced by the New York crowds they have so desperately courted. Not long ago Medvedev was Flushing Meadows' public enemy number one for his on court antics that included giving the crowd the finger during a 2019 match.

But while the semi-final exit was undoubtedly a bitter end to an otherwise terrific North American hardcourt stretch, Alcaraz said he could keep the defeat in perspective. WEST CHESTER, Pa. (AP) — Police on Saturday reported two more confirmed sightings of an escaped murderer on the run for more than a week in southeast Pennsylvania amid a search by hundreds of law enforcement officers. Danelo Souza Cavalcante, 34, escaped from the Chester County Prison while awaiting transfer to state prison on Aug. 31 after being sentenced to life for fatally stabbing his ex-girlfriend in 2021. Prosecutors say he wanted to stop her from telling police that he’s wanted in a killing in his home country of Brazil. Authorities believe Cavalcante, spotted almost a dozen times since his escape, has managed to obtain clothing and other supplies. There’s now a $20,000 reward for information leading to the capture of Cavalcante, whose escape has attracted international attention and became big news in Brazil.

A final involving former-U.S. Open champions Medvedev and three-time winner Novak Djokovic on Sunday is one of obvious high quality but not the next chapter in tennis's hottest rivalry of Djokovic and Alcaraz that has had the sport buzzing. The last time Djokovic and Medvedev clashed at the U.S. Open was the 2021 final, where the Russian claimed his only major so far and denied the Serb a rare calendar Grand Slam. "The challenge is you are playing a guy who has won 23 Grand Slams and I have only one," said Medvedev, who also reached the 2019 U.S. Open final losing to Rafa Nadal. That was all Alcaraz would need, holding on to take the set 6-3 and the first step in his fight back. Alcaraz would make one final stand in a breathtaking game that seesawed back and fourth, Medvedev needing four match points to close the deal.

Sept 9 (Reuters) - Daniil Medvedev expects Novak Djokovic to be in top form at Sunday's U.S. Open final, but the third-seeded Russian adds that he will try to produce his "best-ever version" to beat the record-23-time Grand Slam champion. The Serb battled past American Ben Shelton in straight sets on Friday to set up a rematch with Russia's Medvedev, who denied him a rare calendar Grand Slam two years ago.
