HONG KONG — Satellite images taken over multiple cities in China show heightened activity outside crematoriums and funeral homes, appearing to contradict the country’s low official Covid-19 death figures and illustrating the severity of the outbreak in the world’s most populous nation. Other images from cities around the country show a greater number of cars parked outside funeral homes compared with similar periods in past years. The satellite images are consistent with firsthand NBC News reporting in Beijing, where officials say the outbreak has already peaked. Construction equipment was visible at the Tongzhou funeral home during a visit on Dec. 22, while workers in white hazmat suits could be seen unloading caskets from a steady stream of vans at the Dongjiao funeral home during multiple visits that week. With some funeral homes no longer allowing memorial services, reporters have witnessed families instead holding them at hospitals, where empty caskets are being stored outside in alleys.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy mocked previous Wagner claims to have seized part of Soledar but made no immediate comment on the latest assertions. In a statement on Facebook, the Ukrainian military general staff said Russian forces were suffering heavy losses as they tried to take Soledar and sever Ukrainian supply lines. Beavers are invading Alaska's Arctic tundra as it warms, transforming the landscape like wildfire. As the Arctic tundra warms, woody plants are growing along its rivers and streams, creating perfect habitats for beavers. The beaver ponds create lush oases that could increase biodiversity, but they also play a role in accelerating the climate crisis. All in all, satellites reveal more than 11,000 beaver ponds have appeared across the tundra. CNBC's Investing in Space newsletter offers a view into the business of space exploration and privatization, delivered straight to your inbox. For most anyone with money in the market, 2022 was a year to forget – and space stocks were no exception. Remember, these space SPAC names all came to market at about $10 a share. Morgan Stanley in a note to clients recently highlighted those deals as evidence that "space companies [are] on Santa's List," and I suspect M&A won't be slowing down in 2023. A programming note: Investing in Space will be taking the next week off for holiday travel.
Contrary to a claim on social media, images taken from spacecraft in Low Earth Orbit (LEO) of planes flying by or ships at sea do exist. At least one photo of a flying plane taken from a spacecraft in LEO illustrates the problem. The image is credited to SkySat, a constellation of 21 satellites owned by Planet (here), all of which orbit at between 400 and 600 kilometers (250 to 370 miles) above Earth. Russia continues to boost its Arctic military presence, according to satellite photos obtained by CNN. NATO's chief said Friday there is now "a significant Russian military build-up in the high north." "The shortest way from Russia to North America is over the Arctic North Pole. So the strategic importance of these areas has not changed because of the war in Ukraine," he told CNN. As Insider's Christopher Woody previously reported, Russia has the world's longest Arctic coastline, and has spent years refurbishing military bases and deploying more troops in the region.

Space imagery and infrastructure company Maxar on Friday announced an agreement to go private through an acquisition led by Advent International. The all-cash deal gives Maxar an enterprise value of about $6.4 billion. Private equity firm Advent is taking a $3.1 billion stake in Maxar, with British Columbia Investment Management Corporation also making a $1 billion equity contribution. The deal price with Advent is near the highs Maxar shares hit in early 2021, before dropping alongside other space stocks this year. Because of that, Jablonsky noted that it's "still very early days" for what the future of Maxar would look like under Advent.

Satellites can fly higher in private
  + stars: | 2022-12-16 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
NEW YORK, Dec 16 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Volatile revenue makes for a volatile share price. That’s one explanation for private equity firms Advent International and British Columbia Investment Management’s purchase of satellite firm Maxar Technologies (MAXR.N) for $6.4 billion, including debt. The chunky 129% premium suggests they think the company can fly higher off public markets. A decline in demand for construction of big projects, and the failure of a satellite Maxar built, hit the firm hard, as insurance only partly covered losses and customers shied away. Maxar plans to launch imaging satellites faster in private than it had when it was public.
Accenture issued a revenue range for the current quarter whose midpoint is below current consensus and said the stronger U.S. dollar will impact its fiscal 2023 results by 5%. Maxar Technologies (MAXR) – The satellite owner and operator's shares more than doubled in the premarket after it agreed to be acquired by private equity firm Advent International for $53 per share. Guardant Health (GH) – Guardant shares plunged 33.4% in the premarket following trial results for its DNA blood test for colorectal cancers. Adobe also issued upbeat current quarter guidance. U.S. Steel (X) – U.S. Steel issued better-than-expected current quarter guidance and said commercial demand for steel is on the upswing in the U.S.

[1/2] A satellite image shows bomber in flight at northeast of Engels Air Base in Saratov, Russia, December 3, 2022. Late on Tuesday, sirens sounded on the territory of the airfield in Engels, Russian state-run news agencies reported, citing Yevgeny Shpolsky, first deputy of the Engels district administration. CNN —Moscow’s accusation that Ukrainian drones struck two airbases deep inside Russia has once again raised the febrile question of escalation nine months into the war. Footage on Russian media shows the aftermath of an alleged drone strike Tuesday at an airfield in Kursk, Russia. Ukraine has neither confirmed nor denied responsibility for the blasts, in keeping with Kyiv’s policy of official silence around attacks inside Russia or in Russian-occupied Crimea. But it is hard to know what else Russia could do to Ukraine that it has not already done. Let us first quickly discuss why a Russian nuclear strike seems off the table, at least for now.
Explosions were reported Monday at a military air base inside Russia. Last week, Der Spiegel reported that an "unusual" amount of activity was occurring at the base. The Russian Ministry of Defense later issued a statement attributing the blasts a Ukrainian attack. Images posted Monday by the commercial satellite firm Maxar shows the base hosting the Tu-160 as well as the Tu-95, or Bear, strategic bomber. The base is also home to strategic bombers.
The editor of Russia's RT outlet said Russia "practically" took Ukraine's capital in its invasion. In reality Russia never took Kyiv, and instead retreated and never returned. Simonyan did acknowledge that Russia's army left Kyiv earlier in the war, but not that the army was effectively forced to retreat. She said the main reason that Russia would "never bomb Kyiv" is because "our holy sites" are in the city. Simonyan hinted that Russia could bomb Washington, London, or Berlin, as Russia has no holy sites in those cities.
Bloody parcels containing the eyes of animals and explosives have been sent to several Ukrainian embassies and consuls across Europe, officials said late Friday. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Oleg Nikolenko said in a statement on Facebook that embassies in Spain, Hungary, the Netherlands, Poland, Croatia and Italy had received packages containing the disembodied eyes of animals. Consulates in Naples, Italy, Krakow, Poland, and the Czech city of Brno had also been targeted, he said. Letter bombs were mailed to six addresses in Spain earlier this week, including the Ukrainian Embassy and the U.S. Embassy, as well as to Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, causing security to be tightened. Farther south, the Ukrainian consul in Naples, Maksym Kovalenko, told the AP that his office received two letters containing fish eyes at around 10:30 a.m. Thursday.
Russian forces have set up defensive lines and positions in territory leading toward Crimea. Close-up view of Russian defensive positions in Novotroitsky, Ukraine, captured on November 15, 2022. Ukraine's tanks and tracked vehicles could cut through fields and bypass them or assault the Russian positions from their more vulnerable flanks. Beyond this, Barros said that in establishing these defensive lines, Russian forces are also limiting themselves in their ability to conduct offensive operations in the area. Since late summer, advancing Ukrainian forces have managed to liberate thousands of square miles of territory from under Russian occupation.
