That Pfizer (PFE.N) shot and one developed by GSK (GSK.L) in May became the first two RSV vaccines to win U.S. approval, for use in people aged 60 and over to prevent severe illness. Still, infants and older adults have a higher risk of developing severe RSV. RSV leads to 58,000 to 80,000 hospitalizations among children under age 5, and 60,000 to 160,000 hospitalizations among adults age 65 and older each year, according to the CDC. Early data suggests that the RSV shots are protective for at least two years, but it is not yet clear how often older adults will need to be revaccinated. Can I get the RSV shot alongside my COVID and flu shots?

Pfizer's vaccine, called Abrysvo, is already approved and available in the U.S. for adults ages 60 and up. The panel's recommendation puts Pfizer's maternal shot on track to reach the public as RSV begins to spread at higher levels. But younger children and older adults are particularly vulnerable to more severe RSV infections. Each year, the virus kills a few hundred children younger than 5, and 6,000 to 10,000 seniors, according to the CDC. RSV also causes around 58,000 to 80,000 hospitalizations among children younger than 5 years old each year, the CDC said.

[1/3] A child suffering from an RSV infection at the pediatric intensive care unit at the Asklepios Clinic in Sankt Augustin, Germany, December, 6, 2022. RSV is a common respiratory virus that usually causes mild, cold-like symptoms but can also lead to serious illness and hospitalization. It is typically a seasonal illness, starting in the autumn and peaking in the winter in most of the U.S., according to the CDC. An estimated 58,000 to 80,000 children below the age of five years are hospitalized every year due to RSV infection in the U.S., according to government data. However, the agency said the difference did not appear to be statistically significant, thus might have been due to chance.

NEW YORK (AP) — Inside the U.N.'s gates, world leaders use the spotlight to talk — to each other and the entire planet. Nonprofit organizations send their senior leaders to the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly at significant expense to make sure their voices are heard in the right rooms. It was one of some 40 events the Ford Foundation hosted connected to General Assembly week, flexing its power to convene. The sidelines of the General Assembly first began drawing major crowds in 2014, when a U.N. The framework, he said, helps groups “to focus on a pretty specific action that might feel small given the SDGs but still has impact.

The issue that comes up the most — particularly among women and even from some Republicans and independents, she says — is protecting abortion rights. For those on either side of the debate, Virginia — where all state House and Senate seats are up for election and early voting begins Friday — is among the biggest fights this year over abortion rights. The other is the resounding defeat of incumbent Sen. Joe Morrissey, a scandal-plagued, self-described “pro-life” Democrat, by his June primary challenger, Lashrecse Aird, who centered her campaign around abortion rights. In August, Ohio voters rejected a measure pushed by Republicans that was seen as a proxy for an abortion rights question on the ballot this fall. Perry defended her record and said she believes Virginia — and her Senate matchup against Segura — will be bellwethers for 2024.

The Gates Foundation has been a major supporter of Unitaid, donating $50 million in each 2012 and 2017, according to the foundation's grant database. The two announced their divorce in 2021 but committed to continuing to work together at the foundation. I think we will overcome that because the U.S. has a lot to be proud on this one,” Gates said. Cumulatively, the results of that study, which the foundation funded, has advanced knowledge about the causes of infant mortality. Fewer than half of rural hospitals now have maternity units, prompting government officials and families to scramble for answers. The closures have worsened so-called “maternity care deserts" — counties with no hospitals or birth centers that offer obstetric care and no OB providers. Ultimately, doctors and researchers say, having fewer hospital maternity units makes having babies less safe. “It feels like you’re held in a way.”Some states and communities are taking steps to create more freestanding birth centers. It was a novel and “innovative” idea to request federal nurses to boost staffing at a rural maternity unit, Wyden’s office said.

For the first time ever, vaccines for Covid, the flu and respiratory syncytial virus are available in the U.S.Public health officials are urging eligible Americans to take all three shots so the nation can avoid another "tripledemic" of Covid, flu and RSV, which inundated hospitals last fall and winter. Most people only need to consider whether they should get an updated Pfizer or Moderna Covid shot and a flu vaccine at the same time, since both are broadly available to all Americans. A maternal vaccine from Pfizer protects infants against RSV, but that shot isn't available just yet. Health experts told CNBC that they don't expect any issues with taking all three shots at once. Still, other experts note that there is little research on administering an RSV shot with another vaccine, or on giving all three shots together.

The Supreme Court decision overturning abortion rights may lead to still more maternal deaths, by further limiting access to reproductive care in the United States. The concern is particularly acute in states like Mississippi, which have among the highest rates of maternal deaths in the country and have enacted near total bans on abortion. Yet the United States seems to have accepted these deaths, failing to widely carry out measures that have been shown to stop them. In 2006, its Department of Health began investigating maternal deaths, which were on the rise in the state. The same year, it began a public-private partnership with Stanford University, known as the California Maternal Quality Care Collaborative, aimed at reducing the deaths.

Why Mothers Feel Touched Out - The New York Times
  + stars: | 2023-09-10 | by ( Amanda Montei | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +2 min
We lived in upstate New York, it was winter, and she had fallen asleep on me during a rare outing. “What kind of mother are you?” the man yelled out his car window. A mother’s body apparently belonged to vague patriarchal laws I couldn’t always identify and therefore needed to be taught, many of which rested on the assumption that a lack of autonomy was simply part of motherhood. Even at home alone with my baby, I felt stuck in the snow with a man pointing at me, moralizing my behavior. Many mothers told me to let it be, to give in.

It isn’t unusual for a passer-by to mistake the home of the British artist Sarah Kaye Rodden for a shop. “I have to tell them that this is my home, and then they back away sheepishly,” says Kaye Rodden, 48. Kaye Rodden bought the three-story 2,200-square-foot home nine years ago with her husband, John Rodden, 47, an executive at the film production company Studio Canal UK. Kaye Rodden, who comes from several long lines of makers — her paternal great-great-grandfather was a tanner and harness maker; her maternal grandfather was a carpenter — also wanted to set up a studio. In 2012, after working for years alongside acclaimed British designers including Thomas Heatherwick, Ilse Crawford and Faye Toogood, she began focusing on her own multidisciplinary art practice.

CNN —Mothers who followed the Mediterranean diet while pregnant improved their children’s cognitive, social and emotional development at age 2 compared with children whose mothers did not follow the diet, according to a new randomized clinical trial. “No other dietary model possesses such an impressive accrual of scientific evidence as the traditional Mediterranean diet,” said Martínez-González, who is also an adjunct professor of nutrition at the Harvard T.H. The number of low-weight births dropped to 15.6% of the women who attended stress-reduction classes and 14% of the women who ate a Mediterranean diet. The Mediterranean diet focuses on fruits, vegetables, whole grains, beans and seeds, with a few nuts and a heavy emphasis on extra-virgin olive oil. “The first arm (Mediterranean diet) addressed a more physical and direct aspect: the dietary pattern and the supply of interesting nutrients that are known to be beneficial.
