Now, unmarried women are no longer part of an edgy cultural vanguard — they're the official status quo. As of 2021, a record 52% of American women were either unmarried or separated, according to a report by Wells Fargo Economics. Single women also have single men outnumbered: A Census Bureau analysis of 2019 data found that for every 90 unmarried men in the US, there were 100 unmarried women. In a 2019 survey from the Pew Research Center, only 38% of single women reported looking for dates or a relationship, compared with 61% of single men. Even before 1970, it was far from unusual to see American women working for a living.

AdvertisementThe DOJ has asked the judge in its antitrust case against Google to force the tech giant to sell Chrome, its massively popular browser. In August, a judge ruled Google violated antitrust laws and acted as a monopoly when it came to its search engine. Google will have a chance to respond next month with its own plan before the judge makes a ruling next year. That makes it a powerful distribution arm for Google since Chrome's default search engine is … Google. And Apple was making at least $20 billion a year by defaulting to Google Search .

That's partly due to higher inventory levels, which rose 19% in October compared to last year. Existing home sales rose 3.4% in October, the group said. Sales rose 2.9% year-over-year for the first annual rise since July 2021 when Americans were still in the midst of a pandemic homebuying boom. Despite higher inventory levels, existing home prices have continued to rise, with the median existing home price climbing 4% in October to $407,200. Last week, the 30-year fixed mortgage rate ticked lower but remained elevated at 6.78%, three basis-points higher higher than the 52-week average, according to Freddie Mac.

Dollar stores companies were some best performing stocks in the S&P 500 during the Great Recession, said Piper Sandler managing director Peter Keith. Shares of Dollar Tree — which owns its namesake brand and Family Dollar — and Dollar General have both fallen roughly 50% this year. Lower income Americans, who comprise about 60% of Dollar General sales, are under more pressure to stretch their dollars in the face of high inflation. In its fiscal 2024 second quarter earnings call, Dollar General said those customers are also more reliant on online storefronts, which dollar stores have had less success in rolling out. Both Dollar Tree and Dollar General have also faced numerous worker safety violations over the past decade.

The US government's lawyers said Google should be banned from offering "anything of value for any form" of search distribution. For instance, if most people click on the third result for a particular query, Google's search engine will likely adjust and rank that result higher in the future. They know that the search business is mainly about distribution, and Google may not be able to do this now. "We believe Google's default search placements via contractual agreements represent 50%+ of Google's US search queries," he estimated on Thursday. If half of Google's search queries go away, that could threaten the self-reinforcing cycle of user click data improving its results.

After stalling for three sessions, the greenback was back on the march higher, with investors lifting the dollar index measure against its key rivals closer to a one-year high of 107.07 hit last week. The dollar has rallied more than 2% since the Nov. 5 U.S. presidential election on bets Trump's policies could reignite inflation and temper the Fed's future rate cuts. The dollar index held steady at 106.56, up from a one-week nadir hit in the previous session. "The Russia-Ukraine conflict is heating up, which is further denting sentiment towards the euro alongside the prospects of trade tariffs," another "bullish cue" for the dollar index given the euro's heavy weighting, City Index's Simpson said. The dollar gave up some gains against the yen, down 0.33% at 154.91 yen , although the Japanese currency remained under pressure.
