Though Republicans have branded themselves as the party of capital-P patriotism since the Nixon years, Democrats sought to reclaim American pride this week. A striking number of this year's speakers focused on military might and distinctly American values, from Harris herself to Iraq war veterans. This story is available exclusively to Business Insider subscribers. For the past decade, Loge said that Democrats have been "shy" or "embarrassed" about embracing classic American patriotism, but that Harris and Walz are attempting to reframe the association with the flag. "Democrats serve too," Kauffman told Business Insider.

Trump’s allies are also publicly making their pitch for him to refocus his attention on the race. “You’ve always got to be assessing the state of the race, and I would like to see more offense from the Trump campaign. On a swing of battleground states last week, Harris and her new running mate were greeted by a groundswell of supporters at each stop. "This was a TRUMP idea — She has no ideas, she can only steal from me," Trump wrote on Truth Social. In an appearance on Real America’s Voice last week, Trump’s political director, James Blair, made the case that it is a state-by-state race.

Trump’s plan for blunting Harris’ momentum, some Democrats believe, could reprise elements of the 1988 presidential campaign that George H.W. “I think the Harris campaign has to be prepared for it.”The two sides are already hotly contesting the terrain of strength. Celinda Lake, a Democratic pollster who conducted surveys for Biden’s 2020 campaign, said his strength deficit to Trump had become a nearly insurmountable obstacle for his 2024 campaign. The surveys have also found a huge gender gap in the assessments of whether Harris and Trump are strong. Most important, voters have reached these initial assessments of Harris’ strength before Republicans have really begun their campaign to portray her as weak.

Trump promotes false Harris AI crowd size conspiracy

U.S. Vice President and Democratic Presidential candidate Kamala Harris speaks to supporters during a campaign rally in Romulus, Michigan, U.S., August 7, 2024. Former President Donald Trump on Sunday falsely accused his November election opponent, Vice President Kamala Harris, of using AI technology to fabricate images of the crowd sizes at her rallies, amplifying an unfounded conspiracy to explain the strong enthusiasm for the new Democratic ticket. The Harris campaign rejected the accusation, maintaining that the image is "an actual photo of a 15,000-person crowd for Harris-Walz in Michigan." But Trump's peddling of the conspiracy was among several social media tirades against Harris over this weekend. Last week, the Harris campaign organized a barnstorming of seven battleground states across the country, though several of those stops were postponed due to inclement weather.

If I lived in Florida, I would support the state’s heartbeat bill and vote against the referendum seeking to liberalize Florida’s abortion laws. to build their families, I do not believe that unused embryos should simply be discarded — thrown away as no longer useful. But I’m going to vote for Kamala Harris in 2024 and — ironically enough — I’m doing it in part to try to save conservatism. Since the day Donald Trump came down that escalator in 2015, the MAGA movement has been engaged in a long-running, slow-rolling ideological and characterological transformation of the Republican Party. At each step, it has pushed Republicans further and further away from Reaganite conservatism.

What’s So New About the ‘New Right’?
  + stars: | 2024-08-10 | by ( Clay Risen | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Over the last few years, a loose coalition of conservative thinkers, journalists, publications and think tanks have emerged under the banner of the New Right. With Senator JD Vance, Donald Trump’s running mate, as its flag-bearer, this still-disparate group has been hailed as the intellectual heft behind the MAGA movement, and even as the future of American conservatism. Its very name declares a radical break with the Republican past — “very nascent, very bleeding edge,” is how Vivek Ramaswamy, a former presidential candidate, described it. But how new is the New Right? Still, there are some unifying features.

The now-viral video cuts between Walz, holding his phone on a chair, and Harris, sitting in an office. Moreover, it's an aesthetic that could squarely appeal to the very voters Harris needs, experts told Business Insider. "Tim Walz is one of the few politicians who looks good in casual wear and also looks natural in it," Guy told Business Insider. Tom Williams"When he does the folksy thing, he's actually at the upper bound of folksy, and when he's in a suit he's in the lower bound of suit," Higonnet said. A perfect foil to Harris' polishThe Harris campaign is counting on Walz to court voters associated with the clothing he wears, particularly those hailing from the Blue Wall states of Michigan, Wisconsin, and Pennsylvania.

If there were any doubt whether Kamala Harris has transformed this year’s presidential election, this morning’s latest New York Times/Siena College polls put it to rest. In our first swing state polls since her entry into the race, Vice President Harris leads Donald J. Trump by four points each in Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin among likely voters. It’s a major shift from previous Times/Siena polls, which found Mr. Trump leading Ms. Harris and President Biden by an average of one or two points each across the same three states. Sometimes, it can be hard to explain why polls shift from week to week or month to month. It prevented Democrats from running their usual strategy against Mr. Trump and his MAGA allies: Make an election a referendum on Mr. Trump by running a broadly acceptable candidate.

You could say that Tim Walz became the Democratic vice-presidential nominee with one weird trick — that is, by using that word to describe Donald Trump and JD Vance, a categorization that went viral. He has also been an activist governor of Minnesota with a strong progressive agenda. And I’d like to focus on one key element of that agenda: requiring that public and charter schools provide free breakfasts and lunches to all students. In any case, free school meals are a big deal in pure policy terms. And the partisan divide over feeding students tells you a lot about the difference between the parties, and why you really, really shouldn’t describe the MAGA movement as “populist.”

Vice President Kamala Harris has selected Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz as her running mate, capping the Midwestern Democrat’s short but swift ascent from a relative unknown to a leading driver of the Democratic attacks on Donald Trump and the MAGA agenda. Before Walz was elected governor in 2018, he served 12 years in Congress, representing a conservative-leaning rural district that, both before and after his tenure, has been mostly dominated by Republicans. Walz, 60, is also a former high school teacher and football coach who served in the Army National Guard. Harris and Walz will appear together in Philadelphia later on Tuesday for the new Democratic ticket's first joint rally.

Donald Trump has transformed the Republican Party on all kinds of issues — trade, foreign policy, immigration. To be clear, I think most of Trump’s policies and many of his stories are quite different, bad and often false. The world has changed, their party has changed, their voting base has changed, and so they need to change. The Democratic Party has been unified the past few years, but it has been unified against Trump, against MAGA. Brian Schatz is the senior senator from Hawaii and one of the Democrats doing the most work on these issues.

Eugenicists used photographs and IQ tests to determine which people were "inferior," and sterilized those who didn't measure up — which usually turned out to be anyone who wasn't white and rich. Before he worked with photographs, Kosinski was interested in Facebook.
