By Monday, air travel was more or less back to normal – unless you booked your holiday travel with Southwest Airlines. More than 90% of Tuesday’s US flight cancellations are Southwest, according to flight tracking website FlightAware. Southwest warned that it would continue canceling flights until it could get its operations back on track. Similar to this month’s service mayhem, Southwest fared far worse than its competitors last October. While Southwest canceled hundreds of flights in the days following the peak of October’s disruption, competitors quickly returned to normal service.

Dec 27 (Reuters) - Southwest Airlines Co (LUV.N) led U.S. airline cancellations on Tuesday as the low-cost carrier struggled to recover from harsh winter weather that has wrecked holiday plans for many. An arctic blast and a massive winter storm dubbed Elliott swept over much of the United States in the lead-up to the Christmas holiday weekend, forcing Southwest to scrap more than 12,000 flights since Friday. "The other airlines likely had manageable cancellations and delays, and actually appear to have recovered (in time to get everyone home)." Southwest said on Monday it had decided to continue operating a reduced schedule by flying roughly one third of its schedule "for the next several days." In total, U.S. airlines have canceled more than 5,000 flights for Tuesday and Wednesday, as of Tuesday morning.
The travel disruptions continued into Monday when airlines canceled over 2,500 flights as of early afternoon, according to flight tracking website FlightAware. The hardest hit was Southwest Airlines (LUV.N) with about 1,700 cancellations while Delta Air Lines Inc (DAL.N) had over 250 cancellations. David Sharp said on Twitter his Southwest Airlines flight from Denver to St. Louis was canceled and the next flight was not available for another two days. Voice actress Grey DeLisle tweeted to Southwest Airlines: "Flight 1824 from Nashville to Burbank was canceled due to Elliot and we haven't received any rebooking! Nothing anyone could do but so much travel insanity," tweeted another Twitter user named Alex Gervasi.

Chief Executive Officer Bob Jordan said the reinstatement reflects "the strong return in demand for air travel" as well as Southwest's "solid" operating and financial performance since March. While mounting economic worries have clouded the outlook for consumer spending, the Dallas-based carrier said it has seen no signs of a slowdown in travel demand. It expects strong leisure revenue trends to continue into the first quarter of next year. Southwest will pay a quarterly dividend of 18 cents per share to shareholders on Jan. 31. "With more than two-thirds of its labor contracts still open,...reinstating dividends just illustrates how far Southwest has veered from its path," said Southwest Airlines Pilots Association President Casey Murray.

Dec 7 (Reuters) - Southwest Airlines Co (LUV.N) on Wednesday reinstated its quarterly dividend program more than two years after suspending it in wake of the coronavirus pandemic, as demand for travel shows no signs of easing despite an economic slowdown. The company declared a third-quarter cash dividend of 18 cents per share. "Our fourth-quarter 2022 outlook remains strong, and we have a solid plan for 2023," Chief Executive Officer Bob Jordan said in a statement. The quarterly dividend will be paid on Jan. 31, Southwest added. Reporting by Priyamvada C in Bengaluru; Editing by Sherry Jacob-PhillipsOur Standards: The Thomson Reuters Trust Principles.
Delta's offer also includes a lump-sum one-time payment, reduced health insurance premiums, and improvements in holiday pay, vacation, company contributions to 401(k) and work rules. Its union estimates the proposed deal represents more than $7.2 billion of cumulative value increases over the next four years. Similarly, United pilots turned down an offer that included more than 14.5% cumulative wage increases and enhanced overtime and training pay. Analysts at Jefferies estimate Delta's offer could hike non-fuel operating costs by 450 basis points in 2023 vis-à-vis 2019. Casey Murray, a pilot and the president of the Southwest Airlines Pilots Association, said Delta's proposed deal will help it in the competition for a shrinking pool of pilots.
Nov 21 (Reuters) - A U.S. appeals court on Monday threw out class-action lawsuits accusing Boeing Co and Southwest Airlines Co (LUV.N) of covering up a fatal flaw in the design of the Boeing 737 MAX 8 plane, and ordered that the litigation be dismissed. Boeing and Southwest did not immediately respond to requests for comment. The 737 MAX was grounded worldwide after 346 people died in the October 2018 crash of Lion Air Flight 610 in Indonesia and March 2019 crash of Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302 in Ethiopia. Passengers accused Southwest, Boeing's launch customer for the MAX 8, of pressuring Boeing into deceiving Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) officials during the testing and certification process, ostensibly to lower pilot training costs. In January 2021, Boeing agreed to pay $2.5 billion to resolve a U.S. Department of Justice criminal probe into the 737 MAX crashes.

Nov 10 (Reuters) - Airlines in the United States canceled 1,220 flights on early Thursday as tropical storm Nicole made landfall in the east coast of Florida, disrupting flight schedules and forcing airports in the region to shut. Delta Air Lines (DAL.N), American Airlines Group (AAL.O) and Southwest Airlines (LUV.N) canceled more than 100 flights each, while United Airlines (UAL.O) called off 73 trips, according to flight-tracking website Flightaware.com. Nearly 990 flights were canceled on Wednesday. The Federal Aviation Administration had earlier this week warned travelers that it expected the tropical storm to strengthen and impact travel in Florida and along the southeast coast. Airports within the affected region including Orlando International, Daytona Beach International and Palm Beach International ceased operations, while Jacksonville International Airport remained open.
WASHINGTON, Nov 3 (Reuters) - U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg on Thursday said airlines should ease congestion at Florida airports by equipping their planes so they can fly over water along routes that have been under-utilized. Over-water routes require airlines to carry enough life rafts to accommodate all occupants of the airplane in the event of a loss of one raft of the largest rated capacity. Florida is a major part of U.S. air traffic and for some airlines, like JetBlue Airways (JBLU.O) and Southwest Airlines (LUV.N), 40% or more of daily flights typically touch a Florida airport. Airlines and Buttigieg clashed for months over summer woes that led to tens of thousands of flight disruptions and prompted the department to pressure airlines to do more to boost service to passengers. A4A said the FAA has recently increased ATC staffing in the area covering Florida by 10%.
The Virginia-based planemaker is trying to emerge from overlapping crises: the pandemic and the grounding of the 737 Max, its best-selling model, after fatal crashes. Boeing last month predicted it would deliver 375 MAX planes this year, lower than a July target of "low 400s." Boeing expects to gradually ramp up the rate to five airplanes per month. REGULATORY HURDLESBoeing is also expected to provide an update on the certification of MAX 7 and MAX 10 planes. The Dallas-based carrier expects no 737 Max 7 deliveries this year and has converted 17 orders for next year to the 737 Max 8.
