Feb 7 (Reuters) - Linde (LIN.N), , the world's largest industrial gases company, forecast earnings growth for 2023 on Tuesday after better-than-expected fourth-quarter profit, boosted by clean hydrogen projects as companies seek to cut emissions. "We are well positioned to win more than our fair share of high-quality projects, primarily in clean-energy," Chief Executive Sanjiv Lamba said in an earnings statement. Linde has consistently beaten earnings estimates over the past two years, benefiting from growing hydrogen investments. The group forecast 9-12% growth in 2023 earnings per share excluding currency headwinds, also citing its balanced end-market portfolio, high network density and capital discipline. The stock popped nearly 4% as Wall Street showed appreciation for what we've been saying all along about the durability of the company's businesses even in tough times. Excluding foreign exchange (forex) fluctuations, this marks the ninth quarter in a row of 20% or better annual earnings growth —especially remarkable during multi-decade high inflation. Linde's stock is about 5.7% from its intraday all-time high of $352.18 on Jan. 5, 2022. Although about two-thirds of Linde's sales are in more cyclical end markets, Linde's business model is very defensive. The table above is a look at Q4 sales growth numbers for each category.
CNBC's Jim Cramer on Tuesday told investors to stay selective with stocks despite the market's strong run. "I just want you to have a real earnings cushion with real buybacks or real dividends — ideally both — and I can't feel comfortable recommending anything without them," he said. But he acknowledged that despite his belief that the market is in bull mode, investors shouldn't get ahead of themselves by investing in untouchable tech names. Instead, investors should be looking to pick up shares in "rational, old-line companies," he said. Disclaimer: Cramer's Charitable Trust owns shares of Linde.

According to Forbes, Gautam Adani, the founder and chairman of the group, has lost his status as Asia's richest man to Mukesh Ambani, the chairman of Reliance Industries. When Putin invaded Ukraine, he miscalculated the response from Western countries. NATO has been largely united in its response to Russia's war, consistently providing Kyiv with military aid. Russian President Vladimir Putin has effectively succeeded in remaking the Western bloc, Araud said, adding that "the Western alliance is back." After the Soviet Union collapsed, both Finland and Sweden became NATO partner countries but stopped short of pursuing full membership. Even under the intense pressure of war, the alliance is "holding the way that they have in the past," he said.
In the race to reduce global carbon emissions to zero, clean hydrogen is increasingly expected to be a winner. As the costs of renewable power falls, green hydrogen is becoming a better solution to decarbonization, Goldman said. How to play it Goldman said buy-rated First Solar is among the key players in the generation of green hydrogen. Experts say the tax credit makes nuclear hydrogen highly competitive with fossil fuel produced hydrogen, as companies can look to make clean hydrogen without losing any money. Goldman identified both Air Products & Chemicals and Linde as integrated clean hydrogen supply chain players.

Oil prices dipped in early Asian trade on Monday, but held close to the highest levels since the start of the year on optimism that China's reopening will lift fuel demand at the world's top crude importer. Both contracts rose more than 8% last week, the biggest weekly gain since October, after China's crude imports rose 4% year-on-year in December while Lunar New Year travel brightens the outlook for transportation fuels. Traffic levels in China are continuing to rebound from record low levels following the easing of COVID-19 restrictions, resulting in stronger demand for crude and oil products, ANZ analysts said in a note. "While there is still plenty of optimism around Chinese demand, in the near term the oil market remains relatively well supplied," ING analysts said in a note. Investors will also be watching for a key Bank of Japan (BOJ) meeting this week to determine if it would defend its super-sized stimulus policy.
It's been a tough start to 2023 for shareholders of Linde (LIN). Russia freezing Linde assets First off, while U.S. markets were closed to observe the New Year holiday, Reuters reported Monday that a Russian court froze about $488 million of Linde assets. The legal action was at the request of a Russian joint venture that Linde stopped working on. Long story short, Linde was prepaid $1.8 billion for work on a project, and Russian energy giant Gazprom is suing Linde to get that money back. Shortly after Russia invaded Ukraine, Linde suspended business in Russia and announced plans to scale back operations.
The Inflation Reduction Act signed into law last year could create a boost for stocks from various sectors, and Goldman Sachs broke down its top picks for investors wanting to take advantage. "We believe stock-specific implications are quite wide-ranging from both an impact and timing perspective across multiple sectors," Goldman strategists said in a note. First Solar and Enphase were the two top picks in this space, with Goldman predicting 50% upside in the next 12 months for both names. The bill also gives rise to the clean hydrogen economy in the U.S., including carbon capture, Goldman said. Meanwhile, Goldman said energy services company MasTec is well positioned to benefit from the demand for infrastructure that supports renewable projects.

RusKhimAlyans, the joint venture which is 50% owned by Russia's Gazprom (GAZP.MM), asked the Court of Arbitration of St Petersburg and the Leningrad Region to freeze Linde assets worth 35 billion roubles ($488 million) as a preventative measure. Linde notified the customer in May and June 2022 that it had suspended work under the contract due to European Union sanctions imposed after Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Third-quarter earnings season is finally behind us — and like the prior quarter, results were solid overall compared to analyst forecasts. Danaher (DHR) reported sales and earnings beats on the back of better-than-expected results in all three segments of the health technology company. While U.S. customer traffic was down in the quarter, management noted that it improved sequentially and improved throughout the quarter. Still the luxury hotel and casino company reported solid third-quarter results boosted by its U.S. properties. Amazon (AMZN) reported results that were disappointing, to say the least, and compounded by guidance that was even worse.

The Voya Corporate Leaders Trust Fund hasn't actively changed its strategy or holdings since 1935. Nearly a century after its inception, the Voya Corporate Leaders Trust Fund (LEXCX) is still going strong. That's why Client Portfolio Manager Christina Bargeron believes that the Voya Corporate Leaders Trust Fund was an unprecedented investment vehicle at its time — the "first truly passive offering" available to investors. "It's almost like taking a bet on your outlook for Union Pacific and energy," Bargeron explained. But going forward, Voya has no plans at all to change the guidelines for the Corporate Leaders Trust Fund.

So thought we'd look at what the Santa Claus rally phenomenon is all about and which Club stocks have had the best and worth December track records in recent years. It's a seven-day stretch over which the S & P 500 has historically tended to climb. The entire month of December has actually proven to be a historically strong period for the stock market. Investors would surely welcome a strong December after a terrible 11 months for the stock market. The S & P 500 tanked more than 9% that December, which at the time was its worth monthly performance in nearly a decade.
