LONDON, Oct 10 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Rarely has an academic put theory into practice like Ben Bernanke. Yet the resulting era of tight bank regulation and ultra-low interest rates helped build up risks in financial markets which are only slowly becoming apparent. Bernanke’s research, and that of fellow laureates Douglas Diamond and Philip Dybvig, put lenders at the heart of the economy. In 2021, they accounted for about half of total global financial assets, compared with two-fifths for banks. Years of loose monetary policy, under Bernanke and his successors, have pushed many of these market players to take on more risk.
Indian billionaire Gautam Adani’s conglomerate had just launched a hostile bid to take over an influential broadcaster in the capital. Rupak De Chowdhuri/ReutersMuch of his fortune is tied up in the sprawling Adani Group, which he founded over 30 years ago. Most of the companies in the Adani empire are held closely by the billionaire, his family and associated firms, including nearly 75% stakes in AEL, Adani Power, and Adani Transmissions. Yet, the Adani Group has continued to raise billions from Indian and foreign banks. CreditSights, a research firm owned by Fitch Group, in August published a report about Adani Group titled “Deeply Overleveraged” in which it expressed strong concerns.
U.S. panel manufacturer First Solar is uniquely positioned to benefit from the recently passed Inflation Reduction Act, Evercore ISI said as it upgraded the stock to an outperform rating. Shares of First Solar have gained nearly 80% since July 27 when Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., and Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.V, said they reached an agreement on a climate package. The firm added that given First Solar's domestic footprint the company could benefit from trade restrictions on Chinese solar modules. Evercore is not the only Wall Street firm to note the benefits for First Solar from the IRA. Shares of First Solar dipped more than 2% Thursday.
Lauren Taylor Wolfe co-founded Impactive Capital, an activist investment management firm focused on ESG investing for the long run. We've seen a lot of pushback come from some politicians and I think that's simply too risky. Understanding environmental risks and social risks is simply good fundamental analysis and it's simply good investing. We have too many managers, CEOs and boards focus on hitting their quarterly or annual figures and we believe that there's true opportunity to focus on long term returns, long term IRRs. And I think smart ESG initiatives is simply good business.
The solution: The best investors do both — maintain a long view while also focusing on the shorter term. For the sake of this exercise, let's consider one end of the barbell to be the "long-term view," and on the other the "short-term focus." Long-term view stocks First the long-term view: These stocks will be the more passively managed names and identifying them is what will free us up to focus on those that require more active management. As a result, the long-term view beats the near-term dynamics. With the earnings serving to confirm our long-term view, we took a shot at around the $2,600 level — $2,628.56 to be exact.
