A change-up is coming to Charter Communications ' cable TV packages -- particularly for sports networks. The cable and broadband company said Monday that it plans to start offering a new, two-tier cable package system that will allow customers to select a cheaper, sports-free TV option. Diamond Sports Group, the owner of the largest regional sports networks portfolio, filed for bankruptcy protection earlier this year. But they're often considered expensive for consumers and could turn off potential streaming customers. Beginning in the third quarter, the company said its Spectrum-branded cable TV business will be relaunched as two new services.

The walls around Victor Wembanyama, as he sat for a news conference Friday night at the Thomas and Mack Center, were plastered with images of past winners of the Las Vegas Summer League tournament. The summer league debuted the year after James’s rookie season, so its first marquee rookie was Dwight Howard, the top pick in 2004. As Wembanyama spoke with reporters, a picture of a smiling Howard could be seen on a wall to his right. The closest real comparison is to James’s entry into the league in 2003. Wembanyama had just finished his debut performance in a Spurs jersey, when he scored nine points with eight rebounds, three assists and five blocks.

New York CNN —The Small Business Administration distributed more than $200 billion in potentially fraudulent Covid-19 relief funds, according to a federal watchdog. At least 17% of the $1.2 trillion distributed by the SBA was wasted in fraud, the report found. Most of the fraud apparently happened through the EIDL funds, with the inspector general estimating more than $136 billion of fraudulent activity in that program. While the program successfully helped many companies pay workers during the pandemic, it was plagued by questionable lending and rampant fraud. To date, the agency has recovered nearly $30 billion in funds, according to the report.

It pitted Mr. Bayless, a journalist who helped popularize the daytime sports talk format on ESPN with a show called “First Take,” against Mr. Sharpe, a Hall of Fame tight end who won two Super Bowls with the Denver Broncos and one with the Baltimore Ravens. In an early episode of the show in 2016, Lil Wayne appeared to discuss the national anthem protests led by Colin Kaepernick and other N.F.L. This is not a perspective that has much cultural purchase on NPR or CNN, but it is shared by millions of Americans. Throughout their exchange, Mr. Bayless asked occasional questions but seemed mostly content to listen. A self-described “God and country guy,” Mr. Bayless is often considered a mouthpiece for older, tradition-minded sports fans, but his own views are somewhat less predictable.

The National Basketball Association suspended Ja Morant for 25 games after the Memphis Grizzlies star brandished a gun on a live video for the second time, the league said Friday. Morant, a 23-year-old NBA All-Star, first waved a gun in a livestream from a night club in March, prompting an eight-game suspension. He then displayed a firearm in a car with friends during a second video stream last month. In a statement to ESPN on Friday, Morant apologized and promised he is "going to be better." Morant is endorsed by Nike and Coca-Cola 's Powerade, but the drink company has pulled an ad featuring the NBA star and scrubbed him from social media.

CNN —The Denver Nuggets are on the verge of making history and winning their first ever NBA Championship but with the defiant Miami Heat standing in their way, anything is possible. Game 5 gets underway Monday at Ball Arena, Denver, and the Nuggets will be looking to seal the series in front of a home crowd. ‘We are ready’With the Nuggets just one win away from a first NBA Championship, it would be easy to start the celebrations too early, but this Denver team aren’t getting ahead of themselves just yet. The brilliant one-two punch of Jamal Murray and Jokić has been key for the Nuggets throughout the NBA postseason. The Heat have had to battle their way through the NBA Play-In tournament and then the playoffs as a No.

Nikola Jokic, an Elusive Superstar, Has a Hold on Denver

About two miles from downtown Denver, the yellows, oranges and reds of a spray-painted mural fill the cracked, gray cement wall of a building that houses a temporary employment agency. The mural rises about 20 feet and depicts an expressionless Nikola Jokic next to a much more emotive Jamal Murray, his eyes narrowed and arms extended as though he is wielding a bow and arrow. Thomas Evans, a 38-year-old artist, finished the mural of the two Denver Nuggets stars recently as the team prepared to begin the N.B.A. He said the mural inspired him and some collaborators to write the song as a tribute to Jokic. James is the biggest star in the N.B.A., with four championship rings, piles of endorsement deals and a constant presence on social media and television.

Leading up to the NBA Finals, Nikola Jokic disputed the obvious. Were his Denver Nuggets, a No. 1 seed who had won 53 games during the regular season and swept the Los Angeles Lakers in the Western Conference Finals, favored over a Miami Heat team that had won just 44 games, earned a No. 8 seed and survived a seven-game conference-final tilt against the Boston Celtics?

Mookie Cook as LeBron James Photo: Oluwaseye Olusa/Universal PicturesLakers superstar LeBron James is now at the “will he/won’t he” stage regarding his hinted-at retirement at the ripe old NBA age of 38. But the fact that it is a question at all puts a more nostalgic spin on “Shooting Stars,” the tale of Mr. James’s upbringing, his emergence as the country’s top high-school prospect, and the friends with whom he grew up.

CNN —LeBron James continues paving the way for his post-basketball media career, this time by producing a superstar origin story adapted from his book, “Shooting Stars,” about how his hoops heroism came with an assist from a close-knit group of friends. Directed by Chris Robinson, the story is adapted from the book by James and “Friday Night Lights” author Buzz Bissinger, and previously served as the basis for the documentary “More Than a Game.”Sian Cotton, Romeo Travis, Dru Joyce III, Willie McGee, Coach Dru Joyce II and LeBron James, the real-life inspiration for "Shooting Stars." Where “Shooting Stars” merely glances the rim, ultimately, is the basketball sequences themselves, which rely too much on slow motion and don’t conjure much excitement. Heading directly to streaming via Peacock, “Shooting Stars” provides an earnest reminder that James didn’t spring from the ground a fully formed basketball phenom, but was rather shaped in part by the coaches, teammates, friends and mother that helped guide him. “Shooting Stars” premieres June 2 on Peacock.

There’s Nikola Jokić of the Denver Nuggets – the hulking Serbian center who has battled underappreciation and misinterpretation to become one of the league’s greats and a two-time Most Valuable Player. In fact, the only two years the Bulls didn’t win the title was when Michael Jordan tried his hand at baseball. However, speaking on his former Bulls teammate Stacey King’s podcast ‘Gimme the Hot Sauce’ on Friday, Pippen described Jordan as a “horrible player.”“I’ve seen Michael Jordan play before I came to the Bulls. “Michael Jordan was the greatest to ever put on shoes and play in our game. The way LeBron James plays, Michael Jordan was never asked to play that way because I took that away from him. “And there’s no game that I would ever play in and pick LeBron James over Michael Jordan.
The Miami Heat stunned the Boston Celtics in the Eastern Conference finals on Monday night, clinching a roller-coaster, hold-your-breath, best-of-seven series in Game 7, 103-84, to extend their remarkable postseason run. 8 seed has seemingly surprised everyone but them, will face the Denver Nuggets in the N.B.A. The Nuggets secured their first trip to the championship round by completing a sweep of the Los Angeles Lakers in the Western Conference finals a week ago. The Heat are just the second eighth seed, after the 1998-99 Knicks, to reach the N.B.A. “Sometimes you have to suffer for the things you really want,” Heat Coach Erik Spoelstra said during the postgame trophy presentation.
CNN —The Miami Heat closed out the Boston Celtics in the NBA’s Eastern Conference Finals on Monday, winning a deciding Game 7 103-84 to advance to the NBA Finals against the Denver Nuggets. The Nuggets have not played a game in a week after sweeping the Los Angeles Lakers in the Western Conference Finals last Monday. 1-seeded Milwaukee Bucks in the first round, before winning a war of attrition against the Knicks in the Eastern Conference semis. This brought the Heat and the Celtics together in the Eastern Conference Finals. Back-to-back blowouts meant that Boston took the series back to Miami for Game 6 – the most crucial game of the series so far.
Nikola Jokic Has Mastered the Art of Slowness
  + stars: | 2023-05-22 | by ( Kurt Streeter | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
It is the speed with which he plays, or, rather, the lack of it, that sets him apart in the fast-twitch N.B.A. Jokic, the two-time league most valuable player, could write an instructional book about the game he has come to master: Basketball and the Fine Art of Slowness. He moves where he wants, when he wants, while every other player is slicing around the court in a frenzy. It brought to mind something Jeff Van Gundy, the former N.B.A. Jokic is the epitome of the John Wooden quote, ‘Be quick, don’t hurry.’”“He’s an absolute marvel,” Van Gundy added.
“So we just go with the hot guy.”Jokic is the engine that powers the Nuggets, but Gordon also called him “one of the most unselfish basketball players.” Jokic is averaging a triple-double in the playoffs, with 29.9 points, 13.2 rebounds and 10.1 assists per game. That happened on Saturday, in the Nuggets’ 119-108 win in Game 3 with the Lakers. Jokic had just 5 points and 2 rebounds at halftime, then got into foul trouble by committing his fourth less than halfway through the third quarter. That means somebody else has to step up.’ I think that’s something our team has done time and time again.”The Nuggets’ players have not just accepted roles that require them to defer to others, but embraced them in service of winning a championship. Jokic was the team’s only All-Star this year and no Nugget made an All-Defensive team; Jokic has never played with someone who made those teams while playing with him.

CNN —LeBron James proved he is human after all as the Los Angeles Lakers fell to a 108-103 Game 2 playoff loss against the Denver Nuggets. With the Lakers up by eight points early in the second, James had a clear run to the basket after being found by Rui Hachimura in transition. Jack Dempsey/APLeBron blowing the easy dunk was just one of the many uncharacteristic errors made by the 19-time All-Star in the Game 2 loss. After the game, James reflected on the 0-2 hole the Lakers find themselves in and said that it wasn’t the end of the world. To go with four steals, five assists and 10 rebounds, Murray scored an incredible 37 points in the huge win.
