I've lived here most of my adult life. Vilnius is an affordable location for young peopleWhile working in Vilnius, I've earned more than my parents did in their small town. I prefer Vilnius to other places I've lived as a young personI love my country. I don't think people in old age would classify Lithuania as one of the happiest places in the world.

The latest example of this detachment is "coffee badging." What is coffee badging? Coffee badging is the practice of going into the office for a few hours to "show face," which could entail coffee with co-workers or sitting in on a work meeting — but then leaving to work remotely. Workers don't want to spend more time at the office"The issue isn't just about employees badging in and out; it's about what drives this lack of motivation and interest," Satterwhite said. "Without these, 'coffee badging' is just a symptom of a deeper problem."

Subsea cables are the backbone of the global internet, carrying 99% of the world's intercontinental data traffic. More recently, U.S. tech giants including Meta, Google, Microsoft, and Amazon have invested significant sums to lay down their own cables. Many international subsea cable projects are reportedly circumventing China today due to concerns over data security and Beijing's expanding geopolitical influence.

The Chinese military presence near one of the world’s most vital sea lanes raises fundamental questions about Beijing’s ambitions. “The Ream military base is Cambodia’s, not the military base of any country,” Mey Dina, the commander of the base, told The New York Times.

Pinpointing exactly who sends a cryptocurrency payment can be complicated by the relative anonymity that some crypto services offer. The ransom payment of $25 million hasn’t been previously reported. A $25 million ransom payment is certainly large but not unheard of in the lucrative ransomware economy. UnitedHealth Group, the health care conglomerate whose subsidiary suffered a ransomware attack in February that hobbled pharmacies across the US, paid a $22 million ransom to a different criminal group. But the average ransom payment in the fourth quarter of 2023 was significantly lower: $568,705, according to cybersecurity firm Coveware.

A Mammoth First: 52,000-Year-Old DNA, in 3-D

They probed the sample with an innovative experimental technique that revealed the three-dimensional architecture of the mammoth’s genome. Hendrik Poinar, an evolutionary geneticist at McMaster University in Canada, was “floored” — the technique had successfully captured the original geometry of long stretches of DNA, a feat never before accomplished with an ancient DNA sample. “It’s absolutely beautiful,” said Dr. Poinar, who reviewed the paper for the journal. An organism’s full genome resides in cell nuclei, in long, unfragmented DNA strands called chromosomes. “To have the actual architectural structure of the genome, which suggests gene expression patterns, that’s a whole other level,” Dr. Poinar said.

The market is only driven by a handful of massive tech stocks – and therefore, it's built on a weaker foundation than a market advancing on a broader swath of its constituents. Companies don't lose dominance or stock leadership because they were dominant the last time we had a bull market. We trimmed Nvidia, Meta Platforms, Palo Alto Networks , and five other tech stocks at the beginning of the year. Would the market suddenly become more investible if we broke up the Super Six into say 15 different companies and stocks? However, we don't think they are a reason to bail entirely on any of these names.

This week, the 28-year-old venture capital firm debuted a new pair of funds totaling $2.3 billion, a substantial sum during an abysmal time for the industry's fundraising efforts. The European-born firm is structured in a way that investors across continents invest out of the same funds. The new funds include $800 million to invest at the early stage and $1.5 billion to invest in growth. Those figures are slightly down from the firm's last fundraise, when it collected $900 million for an early-stage fund and $2 billion for a growth fund. That year, Index saw seven portfolio companies go public at a market cap of more than $1 billion, including Roblox and Robinhood.

They're still going to the office, it's true; they're just not spending much time there. The continued practice of coffee badging highlights the resistance some companies are facing as they attempt to increase office attendance after shifting to hybrid or fully in-person attendance. Business Insider previously reported that Dell, meanwhile, is implementing a color-coded system to grade office attendance for hybrid workers. Hackers more than doubled their cryptocurrency spoils in the first half of 2024 compared with a year ago, a report from blockchain research firm TRM Labs showed. The report said $1.38 billion worth of crypto was looted between Jan. 1 and June 24, more than twice as much as the $657 million stolen in the same period a year ago. The largest heist so far this year swiped more than $300 million worth of bitcoin from Japanese crypto exchange DMM Bitcoin. TRM Labs said there have not been fundamental changes in the crypto ecosystem's security that could have contributed to the increase in amount stolen. But the firm noted that crypto prices have been higher on average in the first half of this year, which could have contributed to the higher value of stolen crypto.

Allies of Donald J. Trump are proposing that the United States restart the testing of nuclear weapons in underground detonations should the former president be re-elected in November. A number of nuclear experts reject such a resumption as unnecessary and say it would threaten to end a testing moratorium that the world’s major atomic powers have honored for decades. In the latest issue of Foreign Affairs magazine, Robert C. O’Brien, a former national security adviser to Mr. Trump, urges him to conduct nuclear tests if he wins a new term. The United States instead turned to experts and machines at the nation’s weapons labs to verify the lethality of the country’s arsenal. Today the machines include room-size supercomputers, the world’s most powerful X-ray machine and a system of lasers the size of a sports stadium.

Opinion | Is Kamala Harris Underrated?

If Joe Biden steps aside for the Democratic presidential nomination — still a very big if — the favorite to replace him is Vice President Kamala Harris. In recently leaked post-debate polling from Open Labs, Harris polled better than Biden in matchups against Trump. But Harris hasn’t inhabited that political profile for years. And since becoming Biden’s vice president the conventional wisdom on her has shifted: She’s gone from rising star — many thought her “the next Obama” — to political underachiever. And are critics of Harris fair, or is she underrated now?
