Read previewI moved to Nottingham in 2021 from India to pursue my master's degree at Nottingham Trent University. Tanushree Srivastava/BIBeginning life in the UKI arrived in the UK for the first time in 2021 as an international student. I had pre-booked a studio apartment in Nottingham city center with my friend, another international student at Nottingham Trent University. Even universities like Nottingham Trent and the University of Nottingham have huge gardens and greenery for students. One of the best parts of living in Nottingham was the commitment to its status as a "student city."

I worked with major US news outlets during and after college and wanted to keep working in America, but couldn't secure an H-1B work visa. I spent the next five years in India, working in journalism before pivoting into a brand and communications position. AdvertisementI couldn't get a work visa in the US, but there was a clearer and more stable path to getting one in Canada. My understanding is that it's become harder to get a work visa in the US since. My work visa expires in October 2024, and I'm open to options for settling in Canada beyond that.

CNN —Steve Fishman was still in his teens when he came face-to-face with a serial killer. But as Fishman would learn later, the man harbored a dark secret: His name was Robert Frederick Carr III, and he was a serial killer who preyed on young hitchhikers. Although her father died in a Florida prison in 2007, Donna continues to struggle with her family’s dark past. In an exclusive interview with CNN, Donna tearfully described an adolescence filled with bullying and jokes about having a serial killer dad. “And that’s when I started to withdraw.”Serial killer Robert Carr’s daughter, Donna, in an undated photo he'd kept with him in prison.

Times Insider explains who we are and what we do and delivers behind-the-scenes insights into how our journalism comes together. After recording about 90 episodes of “Hard Fork,” a weekly New York Times podcast about technology and business, life is much the same for its hosts, Kevin Roose and Casey Newton. That is, except for the occasional encounter with a fan, which is a new and sometimes startling experience for them. “Just last night, I was having dinner with two friends visiting from out of town,” Mr. Newton said. Along the way, Mr. Roose and Mr. Newton have tinkered with the podcast’s format, inviting listeners to send in their questions, for example.

Earlier this week, AI company ElevenLabs said it is bringing digitally produced celebrity voice-overs of deceased actors, including Garland, James Dean and Burt Reynolds, to its newly launched Reader app. “We deeply respect their legacy and are honored to have their voices as part of our platform,” said Dustin Blank, head of partnerships at ElevenLabs. The AI is trained on old recordings and those recordings are under copyright. It’s not unlike a company negotiating a copyright deal to use a popular song by Queen in an ad. It’s unclear, however, how AI versions of well-known voices will be received by mass audiences and if it will raise concerns around authenticity.

The news industry just gained a powerful ally in its effort to take on OpenAI. The Center for Investigative Reporting, the country's oldest nonprofit newsroom, sued OpenAI and lead backer Microsoft in federal court on Thursday for alleged copyright infringement, following similar suits from publications including The New York Times , Chicago Tribune and the New York Daily News. In December, The New York Times filed a suit against Microsoft and OpenAI, alleging intellectual property violations related to its journalistic content appearing in ChatGPT training data. Martin and Jodi Picoult, sued OpenAI last year, alleging copyright infringement in using their work to train ChatGPT. Add to that the noise surrounding the US election, and it could be a rougher second half. Central Banks in Canada and the eurozone have both cut interest rates, but inflation rose in both of those regions last month. Australia, meanwhile, saw its inflation rate rise to 4% this week, stoking fears that the Reserve Bank of Australia could soon move to raise rates again. CNN —The trial of Evan Gershkovich, the first American journalist to be arrested on espionage charges in Russia since the Cold War, began Wednesday morning in a closed door hearing that has been condemned by his newspaper and the United States. While many newsrooms subsequently pulled their reporters out of Russia, Gershkovich remained, covering the war and how it was changing life in Russia. Footage on Wednesday morning showed Gershkovich inside a glass court cage, his head shaved, ahead of the trial due to start imminently behind closed doors. NBC announced on Wednesday it will use AI software to recreate Michaels’ voice to deliver daily recaps of the Summer Games for subscribers of its Peacock streaming platform, a milestone for the use of AI by a major media company. The use of an AI voice for the Olympics comes as the technology has grown by leaps and bounds, particularly in its ability to create images, sound and text. CNN —CNN on Thursday will do something no network has done in more than 35 years – host its own general election presidential debate. Thursday night’s presidential debate, a marketing coup for CNN and its new chief executive, Mark Thompson, will offer the network a bright spot – and expectations of record ratings, even if viewers end up watching the debate on other networks. No matter where viewers tune in to watch the primetime matchup between President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump, it will be clear this is a CNN debate. Rival networks, for example, have agreed to use CNN in the programming title and keep the red CNN logo on screen throughout the debate. For CNN, the branding boost from the debate may provide a much-needed shot in the arm.
