CNN —It’s Oscars season and “Barbie” is dominating the discourse. But here’s the thing; “Barbie” is neither smart enough nor interesting enough to be inspiring this level of uproar. It’s also important to remember that “Barbie” has most certainly not been ignored by the Academy Awards’ members. It has eight nominations – which is far more than many of 2023’s other women-directed films got. While “Barbie” achieved cultural phenomenon status last year, other films that took a more complicated approach to womanhood were shut out of the Oscars and the mainstream awards circuit completely.

The 20 leading fund managers made $67 billion in investor profits in 2023, up from the $65 billion recorded during the pandemic-era rally of 2021, according research Monday from LCH Investments, a fund of hedge funds. Overall, the fund management industry recorded gains of $218 billion after fees, according to LCH Investments estimates. Included among the best performers were Christopher Hohn's TCI, Ken Griffin's Citadel and Andreas Halvorsen's Viking.

Long lines snaked into and around polling locations today in New Hampshire, where the first presidential primaries of 2024 will set the tone for the rest of the year. In the Republican contest, Nikki Haley, the former governor of South Carolina, barnstormed polling locations in a last-ditch effort to upset Donald Trump. New Hampshire, which has been known to throw curveballs into the race, has long been seen as her best, and perhaps last, shot at competing with Trump. My colleague Jazmine Ulloa, who has been covering Haley’s campaign, told me that Haley has continued to project confidence and cast herself as a fighter, despite trailing in the polls. But Haley’s campaign vowed in a memo to stay in the race no matter what happens.

CNN —Sunday’s announcement of the four teams selected for the College Football Playoff sent shockwaves through the sport. Instead of folding, Florida State rallied, coming from behind on the road to defeat Florida in Gainesville with backup quarterback Tate Rodemaker. With the selection, the Crimson Tide will make its eighth appearance in the College Football Playoff, the most of any team. Speaking on ESPN on Sunday, College Football Playoff committee chair Boo Corrigan explained why FSU was left out of the top four. "It's safe to say that the market is grinding higher in anticipation of a spot bitcoin ETF approval in January," said Ryan Rasmussen, research analyst at Bitwise Asset Management. "Some investors will continue trying to front-run the potential spot bitcoin ETF approval, but December is essentially a 'wait and see' period for bitcoin," he said. Tokyo CNN —A US military Osprey aircraft crashed off the coast of Japan’s Yakushima Island in southern Kagoshima prefecture on Wednesday, with eight people on board, according to a spokesperson from the Japan Coast Guard. ET), said the spokesperson, adding the 10th Regional Coast Guard Headquarters has dispatched a patrol boat and aircraft to the crash area. It is the latest deadly crash to involve an Osprey military aircraft, with numerous accidents reported over the years. The same year four US service members were killed when their Osprey crashed during NATO training exercises in Norway.
