CNN —It’s Oscars season and “Barbie” is dominating the discourse. But here’s the thing; “Barbie” is neither smart enough nor interesting enough to be inspiring this level of uproar. It’s also important to remember that “Barbie” has most certainly not been ignored by the Academy Awards’ members. It has eight nominations – which is far more than many of 2023’s other women-directed films got. While “Barbie” achieved cultural phenomenon status last year, other films that took a more complicated approach to womanhood were shut out of the Oscars and the mainstream awards circuit completely.

Nikki Haley Battles Long Odds in New Hampshire

Long lines snaked into and around polling locations today in New Hampshire, where the first presidential primaries of 2024 will set the tone for the rest of the year. In the Republican contest, Nikki Haley, the former governor of South Carolina, barnstormed polling locations in a last-ditch effort to upset Donald Trump. New Hampshire, which has been known to throw curveballs into the race, has long been seen as her best, and perhaps last, shot at competing with Trump. My colleague Jazmine Ulloa, who has been covering Haley’s campaign, told me that Haley has continued to project confidence and cast herself as a fighter, despite trailing in the polls. But Haley’s campaign vowed in a memo to stay in the race no matter what happens.

And underpinning that racism is what Wilkerson refers to as a caste system so effective at preserving the domination of White people over everyone else that the Nazis were inspired by it. Caste, Wilkerson says, is the system that creates subjugation. We watch Isabel exploring Germany’s poignant memorials to the Jewish victims of the Holocaust, discussing in one scene how successfully post-war Germany condemned its 12-year caste system to the past. Among Black Americans, attitudes to race are evolving. Every single one of us has skin in the game, for, as Wilkerson points out, the caste system diminishes us all, wherever we may sit in its fabricated hierarchy.

Exchange-traded funds come in many shapes and sizes. Some are plain vanilla, diversified index funds that let you invest in the entire stock and bond markets, and are excellent core holdings for the great majority of people. Then there are the quirky, narrowly focused E.T.F.s like the Inverse Cramer Tracker, which enables you to bet against the stock picks of the CNBC television host Jim Cramer. The fund is legal, approved by the Securities and Exchange Commission — and a money-loser since its inception last year. Betting against Jim Cramer just isn’t a great investing strategy.

Why you'll like it: Like "Inception," this psychological thriller centers on a man's obsessive love for his wife and how his emotions cloud his greater judgment. The two films also share Nolan's love for nonlinear storytelling; largely told in reverse, "Memento" unravels in a unique way, withholding vital information from viewers until the final sequence.

Investors nearing retirement are looking for ways to earn stable income while still growing their assets long term. Sohn suggested that investor appetite for stable income products has grown in part because of this year's narrow market leadership. That's leading some experts to recommend actively managed strategies, which represent 23.3% of all flows into equity and income products this year, according to data from Strategas. Brendan McCarthy, Goldman Sachs Asset Management's managing director of exchange-traded funds, contends that active ETFs with an options overlay strategy can help investors achieve those stable returns. The CBOE Volatility Index (VIX) Index , which closed Friday at 12.63 is currently approaching 5-year lows. It is calculated from the prices of S & P 500 index options. Investors can speculate in VIX futures or VIX futures options, but understanding the futures "term structure" (how the prices of various futures of different expiration relate to each other) isn't that straightforward. Consider the following chart of the Barclays iPath S & P 500 (VXX) , an exchange traded note which is intended to track the S & P 500 short-term VIX futures total return index vs. the VIX Index itself. If one is inclined to make a bullish bet, but is reluctant to get caught "chasing" after the market has already rallied sharply, perhaps we can take advantage of the fact options prices are well below average.
