Apple Inc. (AAPL) is facing headwinds despite the launch of the new iPhone 16, which offered only incremental improvements over the prior generation. Investors eagerly awaited the company's Apple Intelligence software update, but its absence as a significant growth driver is tempering investor enthusiasm. The Coast Guard opened a public hearing earlier this month that is part of a high level investigation into the cause of the implosion. Coast Guard officials noted at the start of the hearing that the submersible had not been independently reviewed, as is standard practice. Wreckage of the Titan was subsequently found on the ocean floor about 330 yards (300 meters) off the bow of the Titanic, Coast Guard officials said. In today's big story, why you should care about a potential Intel-Qualcomm deal , even if it might not work. Getting all that varied experience has proved particularly beneficial for TSMC in the age of cutting-edge mobile and AI chips. The US needs Intel to keep (and get better at) manufacturing chips. The problem with that is that this manufacturing business would have almost no customers, and would fall even further behind TSMC. Experts seem incredibly skeptical about a Qualcomm deal going through.

The largest single-contributor donations went to MAGA Inc., the super PAC backing Trump, with Wisconsin roofing billionaire Diane Hendricks, a prolific GOP megadonor, giving $10 million to the group. On the Democratic side, tech entrepreneurs were the biggest donors to FF PAC, also known as Future Forward, a super PAC backing Harris’ presidential bid. Moskovitz donated $3 million to FF PAC, while Hastings, Jeff Lawson and Erica Lawson each gave $1 million. Super PACs like FF PAC and MAGA Inc. are havens for prolific political megadonors like Hendricks, Lutnick and Hastings because, unlike campaigns and their affiliated committees, super PACs don’t have limits on how much individuals can donate. The Harris campaign also dramatically outspent the Trump campaign in August, burning through about $174 million. By comparison, Trump’s campaign spent just $61 million last month, with the lion’s share – more than $47 million – going toward media buys. The Trump and Harris campaigns are aligned with an array of committees that file disclosure reports on a separate schedule. The Trump campaign, as CNN has previously reported, has opted to outsource much of its ground game operation to outside organizations. The super PAC spent more than $77 million in August, including nearly $62 million on independent expenditures to benefit the vice president’s campaign.

New York City’s former Covid czar has admitted to participating in what he called “private gatherings” attended by multiple people while the rest of the city was on lockdown and large get-togethers were prohibited during the pandemic. “I served in City Hall between April 2020 — May 2021,” Varma said in a statement issued by his spokesman, Chris Vlasto. He became a national figure when Brooklyn Nets star Kyrie Irving was barred from playing basketball in New York City because he refused to get vaccinated. At the time, New York state had increased the limit on outdoor social gatherings from 200 to 500 people. In the apparently heavily edited video, Varma appeared to recognize the hypocrisy of telling New Yorkers to isolate while he was partying with large groups of people.

The local police team responsible for the roof a shooter used to fire at ex-President Donald Trump on July 13 in Butler, Pennsylvania, had never spoken to the Secret Service prior to the attempted assassination, a report released by the Secret Service on Friday says. Among other errors, the report found that one local police entity working security at the Trump rally requested support from another local department without the Secret Service being aware. While investigating the incident, the Secret Service placed some officials, including the director of the Secret Service’s Pittsburgh Field Office, on leave. “The former president is getting everything that the current president has with respect to Secret Service assets,” Rowe said. Rowe also told reporters at a news conference Friday that the Secret Service did not deny security assets to the Trump campaign ahead of the July rally in Butler.

Found Golf Balls CEO Shaun Shienfield, whose company recovers and resells millions of lost balls across the US and Canada each year, told CNN that he gauged the average to be between three and four each round. Using Shienfield’s low estimate, that’s over 1.5 billion balls lost in the US every year since 2020. “While precise global estimates are challenging … the worldwide figure could easily exceed 3 to 5 billion golf balls lost each year,” Petersen told CNN. Mitchell Schols, founder of Canada-based Biodegradable Golf Balls, put a “very conservative” estimate for North America at one million balls lost to oceans annually. One UK-based man told CNN in 2015 that he could earn up to £100,000 (about $114,000) annually by diving to retrieve golf balls from lakes on golf courses.

The decision marks a significant shift from Amazon's earlier policy, which required employees to badge in three days a week. Following the announcement, anxious workers have flooded LinkedIn and X feeds with posts wondering if their companies would be next to get rid of flexible work arrangements. Just one-third (33%) of U.S. companies require employees to come to the office five days a week, according to recent data from Flex Index, a platform that tracks companies' flexible work policies. Under 10% of tech companies with more than 1,000 employees have such a requirement. "We might see other smaller tech companies follow Amazon's lead, but most will continue sticking to some kind of hybrid arrangement," he says.
