Investors are worried that labor market weakness could thwart a soft landing. AdvertisementAs inflation creeps downward, investors are increasingly turning their attention to the labor market to look for clues of a soft landing. Labor market fundamentals remain strong, according to Joseph Briggs, co-lead of Goldman Sachs' global economics team and a former Federal Reserve senior economist. "If we take a broad assessment across a number of different labor market indicators, they are still roughly where they were from 2017 to 2019, and that was a pretty healthy labor market," Briggs said. AdvertisementIn Briggs' view, the following three indicators point to a normalizing late-cycle labor market, and in turn, a strong economy.

Tim Walz said during the VP debate that help from family members should not be the solution to childcare. JD Vance previously suggested that grandparents help out more to solve the childcare crisis. Tim Walz took the debate stage in New York to discuss a range of topics, including healthcare, housing, and the economy. AdvertisementHis comments sparked criticism from grandparents and childcare workers who argued that relying on family members for childcare is not feasible. We should have a family care model that makes choice possible," he said.

Here are key lines from the debate, which was hosted by CBS News in New York City on Tuesday. Vance said many of the things Trump says, but he did it with a control that Trump lacks. The only answer is during the four years that Donald Trump was president. We have a historic immigration crisis because Kamala Harris started and said that she wanted to undo all of Donald Trump’s border policies. We could come together and solve this if we didn’t let Donald Trump continue to make it an issue.

Mortgage rates are starting the month a little higher, with 30-year rates hovering around 5.90%, according to Zillow data. But if conditions hold up, mortgage rates will likely remain near their current levels through the end of 2024. 5-Year Mortgage Rate TrendsHere's how 30-year and 15-year mortgage rates have trended over the last five years, according to Freddie Mac data. Mortgage rates are determined by a variety of different factors, including larger economic trends, Federal Reserve policy, your state's current mortgage rates, the type of loan you're getting, and your personal financial profile. This means your entire monthly mortgage payment, including taxes and insurance, shouldn't exceed 28% of your pre-tax monthly income.

Federal spending on children climbed to a peak of $11,690 per child in 2021 in response to the Covid-19 pandemic. In 2024, that spending is expected to level off to $8,760 per child — a decline of about $230 per child from the previous year, the research found. In 2021, child poverty fell to 5.2%, down from 12.6% in 2019. The expiration of the aid drove child poverty back up to 12.4% in 2022. Tax expenditures represent the largest drop in federal spending on children between 2022 and 2023, while there were also sharp declines in spending on nutrition and more modest changes in education funding, according to the Urban Institute.

Sure, many small businesses aren't glamorous — think dental practices or accounting firms — and they involve long hours and unpredictable market forces. The US Small Business Administration said in July that there were nearly 35 million small businesses in the US. Fewer than two-thirds of small businesses in the US in 2022 were profitable, and over a million businesses of all sizes close each year. Traditionally, small businesses were family businesses, and the eldest male child was expected to take it over when the patriarch was ready to step down. Buying up small businesses allows people without wealthy boomer parents to cash in on the trillions of dollars of wealth the generation is sitting on.

New rules on buying and selling homes are in play, now that a settlement from a class-action lawsuit has taken effect. At the time of listing a property, the home seller negotiated with the listing agent what the compensation would be for a buyer's agent, which appeared on the MLS. "Now, the buyer chooses how much the buyer's agent makes, the sellers choose how much the seller's agents make," Glenn Kelman, CEO of online real estate brokerage firm Redfin, told CNBC. Any confusion around the new practices among agents and consumers will likely be temporary, said Kerry Melcher, head of real estate at Opendoor. "Real estate agents are good at moving the market," she said.

CNN —All signs suggest that the partisan divide over changing gender roles in society could widen even further in the 2024 election, adding a new source of uncertainty to a contest already on a knife’s edge. That was only the latest example of his campaign signaling its support for traditional gender roles. “The messaging on gender coming out of the campaign broadly is very much about reaffirming traditional roles for women and for men,” Cassese said. In PRRI polling this year, nearly half of Republicans agreed with two absolutist statements about gender roles. His problem is that most voters outside the core GOP coalition are generally comfortable with the changes in gender roles and family dynamics since the “Father Knows Best” era in the 1950s.

Rupert Murdoch looks on as he walks on the day of the hearing on the contentious matter of succession of Rupert Murdoch's global television and publishing empire, in Reno, Nevada, U.S. September 23, 2024. British real estate portal Rightmove rejected a sweetened $8.29 billion takeover bid from Rupert Murdoch's Australian property listing firm REA Group on Monday, saying the fourth bid still undervalued the company. That gave Rightmove an implied value of 781 pence per share, about a 3% increase over the previous bid. Rightmove said that during the discussions, REA had requested to extend the deadline to allow it to consider a potential fifth proposal. The U.K. company looks primed for a steady recovery from a property market downturn as the potential for more rate cuts boosts sentiment in the U.K. housing sector.

For all the Democratic Party energy behind Kamala Harris, she is in a dead heat in all seven swing states against Donald Trump, despite his low favorability ratings and divisive policies like tax cuts for the wealthy and opposition to abortion rights. The participants felt torn about whether America’s best days were ahead or in the past and had seen some modest improvements in the economy — especially the job and housing markets — but felt worried personally about inflation and the future. The participants reviled Mr. Trump; this group wasn’t undecided in the sense that most would swing to him. The participants didn’t know a lot about her policies on the economy, Israel and Gaza, climate change, transgender kids, housing and immigration. The tight polls in the swing states make more sense after listening to these 15 voters.

CNBC's Jim Cramer on Monday looked back at the past three months, picking out positives in a chaotic stretch for the market. He added that the central bank set the stage for a substantial rate cut so they could make the move without sending Wall Street into a panic. The market also broadened out after Big Tech had dominated for months on end, Cramer said. And despite the tumult in the leadup to a divisive presidential election, Wall Street "chose to ignore the drama," he said. "The months of July, August, September gave us some outstanding returns," Cramer said.
