Prosecutors contended Officer Nathan Woodyard's actions including the neck hold contributed to McClain's death. Here’s what you need to know about the criminal trials:WHY WERE THE OFFICERS AND PARAMEDICS CHARGED? Local prosecutors initially decided not to bring charges in McClain’s death largely because an initial autopsy didn’t determine exactly how he died. Defense attorneys for the officers repeatedly said it was the ketamine injection — not their clients — that caused McClain’s death. In Woodyard’s case, the defense brought in a paid expert witness who has also worked for the prosecution in the paramedic’s case.

By Cynthia Kim and Jihoon LeeSEOUL (Reuters) - South Korea's finance minister defended the government's ban on short-selling of stocks, an announcement that comes ahead of general elections next year and has drawn criticism from market players who say the move could hurt the country's global credibility. The financial regulator on Sunday reimposed a full ban on short-selling until the end of June 2024 to create a "level playing field" for retail and institutional investors. "The move completely thwarted Korea's plans to convince MSCI that it deserves a spot in the developed market status. The number of retail stock trading accounts has roughly doubled since 2017 to about 14 million, with about one in every five Koreans having an account. South Korea's Financial Supervisory Service in October said it would likely fine two Hong Kong-based investment banks it determined had engaged in naked short-selling transactions worth 40 billion won ($29.58 million) and 16 billion won respectively.

At Paul Taylor, a Drum Circle and a Fierce Sisterhood

It’s easy to imagine what Keigwin was after: introducing the noise-making excitation of a percussive score and flaunting its liveness. For a better use of a percussive score, Taylor audiences can look this season to Ulysses Dove’s “Vespers,” which the company debuted on Saturday. It begins with a woman sitting on a cafe chair, and the way that Jada Pearman sits up straight speaks volumes. The six Taylor women — especially Pearman and Madelyn Ho, who are having breakthrough seasons — become one fierce sisterhood. Where “Vespers” shows how a percussive score can be effectively channeled, Lauren Lovette’s new “Echo” shows how sharing focus with live musicians can work.

I have no idea how it managed to reach Hong Kong,” he said. Gay Games organizers hit back at the opposition from Hong Kong lawmakers and have vowed the event will be a proud, non-political, celebration of inclusivity. A spokesman did not answer the first part and replied on the latter: “Any activity that takes place in Hong Kong must not contravene any laws of Hong Kong. One of Hong Kong leader John Lee’s top advisers and also a lawmaker, Ip has been one of the few Hong Kong politicians vocally supportive of the games. Two paramedics face separate trials this month for their role in giving McClain ketamine, a powerful sedative at times used on highly agitated patients. The death of McClain, 23, inspired sweeping police reforms in Colorado in 2020, including the banning of chokeholds like the one he was put in. "Nathan Woodyard did not kill Elijah McClain, he's not responsible for what other people did," defense attorney Andrew Ho said in his closing argument. "Ketamine is what killed Elijah McClain."

And that brings me to the second missing ingredient in the briefs supporting Rahimi: the Second Amendment itself. That is not surprising, the Cato brief notes, because when Section 922(g)(8) was enacted, there was no recognized right to individual gun ownership in the first place. to be deprived through such minimal process.”Other briefs in support of Mr. Rahimi take issue with the nature of protective orders themselves. When I first read Judge Ho’s opinion, I regarded it as an odd digression from the matter at hand, namely how to interpret and apply the Second Amendment. Does even this trigger-happy Supreme Court want to be seen as stripping from women in mortal danger from their intimate partners whatever safety this 29-year-old law has provided?

Nov 4 (Reuters) - The Gay Games Hong Kong (GGHK) kicked off on Saturday, its first time in Asia, despite opposition from anti-LGBTQ lawmakers and human rights activists. The opening ceremony began with a march-in by the GGHK, Federation of Gay Games, and delegations from around the world, followed by performances including the Hong Kong lion dance. "The holding of the Gay Games in Hong Kong is strong testimony to the diversity, inclusion, and unity of our city," Ip said in her welcoming speech. Five Hong Kong human rights activists also called for the Games to be cancelled in June, saying organisers "have aligned themselves with pro-authoritarian figures responsible for widespread persecution against the people of Hong Kong". Goldman Sachs announced its 2023 class of managing directors Thursday afternoon, giving 608 employees the coveted title. It's a smaller cohort than the bank's 2021 MD class, down 5% amid a dealmaking slowdown. Still, Goldman appears to have taken pains to promote employees in revenue-generating divisions like investment banking and trading. Goldman says the percentage of women it promoted as part of the 2023 MD class sets a record, up 1% from 2021. Two years ago, Goldman promoted the largest managing director class in its history, naming 643 employees to the designation in 2021.

Analysts said, however, that Asiana's greenlighting of the cargo unit sale did not necessarily ensure smooth sailing ahead for the deal. They noted the desired valuation for the air cargo unit of some 700 billion won ($520 million) including debt, as reported by local media, was probably too high. Approving the sale was a contentious issue at Asiana amid concerns that a takeover by Korean Air would lead to the loss of many Asiana jobs. Korean Air also said it will buy 300 billion won of convertible bonds issued by Asiana, part of fresh financial support to the smaller airline. The company accounts for about a fifth of South Korea's market for overseas air cargo.

Michelle Carder and Michael Ochs moved into a century-old Victorian home in Michigan in May 2016. AdvertisementAdvertisementVictorian homes are an alluring, lifelong love affair for Michelle Carder, who's fascinated with the era's grandeur and history. "The Victorian era was the first time in history that average people could afford to decorate their homes beautifully. The couple purchased the four-bedroom, three-bathroom home for $95,000 from an investment group that was "desperate to get rid of this thing," Carder said. AdvertisementAdvertisementMuch of those funds — $250,000, to be exact — have been poured into transforming the ho-hum Victorian home into a maximalist wonderland.

I am watching the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza today and thinking about one of the world leaders I’ve most admired: Manmohan Singh. The cost of occupying Gaza could overstretch the Israeli military and economy for years to come. Israel should keep the door open for a humanitarian cease-fire and prisoner exchange that will also allow Israel to pause and reflect on exactly where it is going with its rushed Gaza military operation — and the price it could pay over the long haul. Israel built an impressive society and economy, even if flawed, and Hamas took nearly all of its resources and built attack tunnels. CNN —Hye Minyi can still vividly recall what happened in Itaewon, South Korea, on the night of October 29, 2022. Whether the disaster in Itaewon last year will put a dent in this growing popularity is yet to be seen. “We are extremely concerned that there could be a repeat of the Itaewon tragedy,” said Shibuya mayor Ken Hasebe. The Itaewon crowd crush was South Korea’s worst peacetime disaster since the sinking of a ferry in 2014 killed 304 people – among them 250 students and teachers from the Danwon State High School. Lee is certain of one thing, however – that she is “never going back to the area again.”“For me, Halloween and the Itaewon tragedy are (inextricably) linked,” she said.

Seoul, South Korea CNN —When fighting broke out in Kang Hyeon-joo’s elementary school classroom, her heart would beat so fast she could not breathe and her vision would blur. Tens of thousands of teachers have been protesting in recent months, calling for more protection from students and parents. But we couldn’t do anything, if we teach them, we could be accused,” said Ahn Ji-hye, an elementary school teacher who helped organize previous protests. Mourners lay flowers in front of a memorial altar for an elementary school teacher who died in an apparent suicide in July at an elementary school in Seoul on September 4, 2023. Vietnam's real estate woes: how much worse can they get?
  + stars: | 2023-10-26 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +4 min
HANOI, Oct 26 (Reuters) - A rough year for Vietnam's real estate sector has seen developers miss interest payments on debt, amid a credit crunch spurred by ill-timed government measures, although spillover risk has been limited. Shares of the largest listed developer, Vinhomes (VHM.HM), part of the country's biggest conglomerate, Vingroup (VIC.HM), have fallen 13% this year. In September, the Asian Development Bank warned of potential spillover into banking from irregularities in corporate bonds and real estate markets, although troubled bonds made up just a small portion of total bank credit. While ill-timed government measures, companies' high debt and oversupply are responsible for the sectors' woes in both countries, conditions are different in Vietnam. Vietnam has a less acute situation of oversupply and speculation than China, he added, while real estate's contribution to its economy is also smaller.

Yuan leads rally in Asian currencies on China's economic bounce
  + stars: | 2023-10-18 | by ( ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +2 min
Asian currencies caught a boost from better-than-expected Chinese economic data on Wednesday, driving the yuan to a one-week high and putting a dampener on the U.S. dollar which has rallied for weeks on end as U.S. yields have climbed. A blast at a Gaza hospital also kept moves modest and traders on edge at the prospect of a widening conflict. Official data showed China's economy grew 1.3% in the third quarter, accelerating from 0.5% in the previous quarter and topping market forecasts for an increase of 1%. On Tuesday U.S. yields had shot sharply higher after data showed retail sales increased strongly, which had helped the dollar pile pressure on the low-yielding Japanese yen. "Maybe it's hitting the limits of this stage of the rally, and needs a bit of a correction."

At a South Korean military airbase south of Seoul on Monday, exhibitors made final preparations as participants in early events wandered among South Korean and U.S. military vehicles and warplanes on the tarmac, including advanced American stealth F-22 and F-35 aircraft. Under Yoon, South Korea and the United States have stepped up displays of strength, particularly U.S. nuclear-capable assets, in an effort to deter North Korea.
