This was a day to forget for the United States men’s soccer team. As seen from the graphic below, Morocco dominated the game in key statistical metrics, ending the United States’ hopes of a medal. Thus concludes the United States men’s two-tournament summer. Tanner Tessmann was at the heart of most of the United States’ positive passages. It won’t inspire many hearts and minds, but the United States did exactly that in the first half against Morocco — save for one ill-advised wag of Harriel’s leg.

Israeli athletes who had already been moving around the Paris Games with a security apparatus befitting a head of state can expect heightened protection after the recent assassinations of Hezbollah and Hamas leaders caused security officials to fear for the athletes’ safety. On Saturday, a rocket from Lebanon hit a soccer field in Majdal Shams, an Arab Druse village in the Israeli-controlled Golan Heights. Israel blamed the deadly rocket attack on Hezbollah, which denied responsibility. On Tuesday, an Israeli airstrike killed a Hezbollah commander near Beirut, the Lebanese capital, in retaliation. Before traveling to Paris, Israeli athletes reported receiving anonymous emails that threatened, “we intend to repeat the events of Munich 1972.”

Iranian state media and Hamas previously indicated that Haniyeh was killed by a rocket fired from outside the building in which he was staying. An image published by the New York Times shows the building where Haniyeh is believed to have been assassinated. He had a full schedule of public appearances and meetings before he was assassinated, according to Iranian state media press reports. Haniyeh was first pictured on Tuesday, before the inauguration, meeting with Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Afterwards, Iranian state media published images of Haniyeh meeting with Iran’s new President Masoud Pezeshkian.

Gold has risen since the Beirut strike, "underlining its risk hedge characteristics," the analysts said. High demand from banks and a likely uptick in demand when the Federal Reserve lowers rates should also push gold prices higher, they said.

Washington CNN —The White House on Wednesday said reports of the assassination of a Hamas political leader in Iran “don’t help with the temperature going down,” while repeating calls for a ceasefire deal that would see the release of hostages held by Hamas. “These reports over the last 24-48 hours certainly don’t help with the temperature going down. I’m not going to be Pollyannaish about it; we’re obviously concerned about escalation,” White House national security communications adviser John Kirby told reporters during the White House press briefing. In both conversations, according to the State Department, the officials emphasized the need for a ceasefire in Gaza. “It’s too soon to know what impact any of this is going to have on the ceasefire deal,” Kirby said at the briefing.

As tension grows between Israel and Hezbollah, the dominant political and military force in Lebanon, neither side wants a full-scale war. But one could explode inadvertently — precipitated by an attack like the launch of what Israel said was a Hezbollah missile that hit Majdal Shams in the Golan Heights on Saturday, for example — or deliberately, should Israel see a post-Gaza opportunity to rid itself of another one of its enemies. In the best case, a cease-fire in Israel’s war on Hamas in Gaza would prompt Hezbollah to stop firing rockets into the Jewish state, and the possibility of war would fade. After Saturday’s missile strike, which killed 12 children and teenagers, Israel hit a building in Beirut on Tuesday, saying it targeted the Hezbollah commander it believes was responsible. If Israel goes further and launches a major operation to uproot Hezbollah, which right-wing members of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government have been urging, it would be devastating.

Israel launched a deadly strike in a densely populated Beirut suburb on Tuesday in retaliation for a rocket attack in the Israeli-controlled Golan Heights that it blamed Hezbollah for and that killed 12 children and teenagers on a soccer field. New York CNN —Spirit Airlines, the ultra-low cost carrier known for charging bargain-hunting passengers for anything and everything, is introducing business class seating. Farther back in the plane Spirit will also allow passengers to pay more for seats in rows where the middle seat will not be sold. Spirit looked at merging, first with another ultra low cost carrier, Frontier Airlines, and then with JetBlue Airways. Last week Southwest Airlines, the nation’s older lower fare carrier, announced it would end its open seating policy it has used throughout its history and let passengers reserve seats for the first time. However, Southwest has not announced any plans to offer wider, business class seats.

The world will soon know the shape and scale of Israel’s response to Hezbollah for Saturday’s rocket attack on a Druze town in the Golan Heights, which killed 12 children. But it’s not too soon to ask what purpose the expected retaliation will serve in the context of Israel’s five wars. Israel’s most strident critics insist that the current conflict is about Palestinian existence, about Israel’s alleged refusal to grant a Palestinian homeland. Israel agreed to a Palestinian Authority in 1993, offered a Palestinian state in 2000 and vacated the Gaza Strip in 2005. When campus protesters at Princeton chanted, “We don’t want no two states, we want ’48,” they weren’t asking for Israel to accept a Palestinian state.

Beirut CNN —Israel says it has launched a strike in Beirut, Lebanon, targeting a Hezbollah commander that it blamed for a deadly attack in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights. An Israeli official identified the target of the strike as Fu’ad Shukr, also known as al-Hajj Mohsin. Israel wanted to send “a very strong message” with tonight’s strike, according to a senior Israeli official, but hopes to avoid further escalation. Hezbollah denied responsibility for the strike but did say it had fired at Israeli military targets in the area.
